Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can use episodes listed in a podcast RSS feed as the audio for a YouTube Live broadcast, but the feed itself is not a live stream. Get the episode media, play it through an encoder such as OBS, and send the encoder’s audiovisual output to YouTube using a live stream URL and stream key. If you only want podcast episodes available on YouTube on demand, YouTube’s RSS podcast feature is a separate, simpler option that creates videos with your show artwork.
What an RSS feed can—and cannot—do
A podcast RSS feed is structured information about episodes, including titles and links to media files. An episode’s <enclosure> element points to its audio file and can include its media type and file length; the XML feed is not the audio transport for a live broadcast. Apple’s feed requirements call for a unique enclosure for each episode. See the Podcast Standards Project’s PSP-1 Podcast RSS Standard and Apple Podcasts for Creators’ RSS feed requirements.
To broadcast an episode live, something must play the audio and an encoder must send a video-and-audio stream to YouTube Live. The video can be a title card, show artwork, waveform, or other visual you have the rights to use. By contrast, YouTube’s RSS import makes on-demand episode videos using show artwork; it does not create a live broadcast.
Choose between an on-demand upload and a live broadcast
| What you need | YouTube RSS podcast upload | Encoder-based YouTube Live |
|---|---|---|
| Result | On-demand episode videos with show artwork | A live audiovisual broadcast; streams under 12 hours are automatically archived |
| Input | Feed URL and selected episodes | Episode audio or a prepared playlist, played through an encoder |
| Setup | Connect the feed in YouTube Studio and verify feed ownership | Create or schedule a live stream, then configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key |
| New episodes | YouTube can upload episodes added to the feed | Update the source playlist or automation yourself |
| Availability | Available only in selected regions | YouTube Live availability and account requirements apply |
| Best suited to | Regular on-demand podcast distribution | A scheduled listening event, continuous broadcast, or live presentation |
YouTube says, “When you submit your RSS feed to YouTube, YouTube will create videos for each podcast episode that you choose to upload.” Read YouTube Help: Deliver podcasts using an RSS feed for availability and setup details. An RSS upload is not a substitute for an encoder when you want to go live.

Prepare the episode audio and visuals
Get the media file
Use the enclosure URL for the episode you want to play. Open or download that media file, or use a feed-aware process that retrieves it. Do not try to feed the RSS XML itself to an audio player as though it were the episode.
Choose manual playback or a playlist
For a one-off broadcast, load the episode into an OBS Media Source. OBS documents playback support for formats including MP3 and AAC and provides a Loop option. For a prepared sequence of files, OBS’s VLC Video Source can play and loop a playlist. These are playback options for media you have prepared; they do not establish that OBS automatically watches arbitrary RSS feeds for new episodes. See OBS Project: Media Sources (documentation published January 11, 2022; check the documentation for the version you use).

Make a visual scene
In OBS, create a scene and add the episode source alongside show art, a title card, a waveform, or other appropriate visuals. Check that the image and all audio are yours to use or covered by permission. A still image is one possible visual, but a live encoder output still needs a video stream as well as audio.
Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Create the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Requirements and availability can depend on your account and region; consult YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Protect the stream key: Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in your encoder’s streaming settings. The key identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it, so treat it like a credential and do not publish or share it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the encoder connection. Technical delivery details are also documented in Google for Developers: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
- Set output: Use H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR), in line with YouTube’s published encoder guidance. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube recommends two seconds and says it must not exceed four seconds. Choose a resolution and bitrate supported by your upload connection and the YouTube settings for your stream. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before going live, since the appropriate bitrate depends on the selected output.
- Test before the event: Start encoder output and check the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio. Listen for clear, continuous audio and check that the visual is present and moving as intended. A successful connection does not confirm that you have rights to everything in the episode.
- End the stream deliberately: When the program is over, stop the broadcast in the encoder and confirm the end in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer broadcast will be archived automatically. See the archive guidance in YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
What to know about RSS automation and new episodes
For an encoder-based live broadcast, a new episode appearing in the RSS feed does not by itself update the audio currently playing in OBS. You need to replace the source or update the prepared playlist, or build a separate automation process. The OBS playback documentation describes media sources and playlists, not native monitoring of arbitrary RSS feeds. Do not assume a one-click feed-to-live integration will poll your feed and schedule each new enclosure unless the specific tool documents that capability, playlist behavior, stream-key handling, and YouTube compatibility.

If you instead connect a feed to YouTube’s RSS podcast feature, YouTube can upload newly added episodes as on-demand videos. The feature is limited to selected regions. YouTube also says an RSS-uploaded episode’s audio cannot simply be replaced in place after publication: re-uploading creates a new video and makes the old one private. Check YouTube’s RSS podcast instructions before choosing that route.
Rights, promotions, and YouTube policy
Having access to a feed or audio file does not establish permission to broadcast it. Confirm that your rights cover the episode’s music, clips, guest contributions, and other third-party material for a YouTube Live broadcast and any resulting archive.

YouTube’s RSS guidance says podcast content uploaded through its RSS feature cannot contain advertisements. Branded content—including host-read promotions, sponsorships, and endorsements—must be disclosed and comply with applicable policies. YouTube also recommends checking uploaded episodes for monetization or copyright issues. These RSS-specific instructions are not a blanket finding about every live format; check the policies applicable to your broadcast in YouTube Help: Deliver podcasts using an RSS feed and make any required disclosures.

- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that encoder output is running, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the broadcast is the one currently open in YouTube Studio. If you exposed the key, replace it rather than continuing to use a compromised credential.
- Audio plays but the live picture is missing: Confirm that the OBS scene includes a visual source and that it is visible in the program output. An audio-only file needs a visual element for an audiovisual stream.
- The episode does not play or loops incorrectly: Confirm that the enclosure media file—not the feed XML—is loaded in the source. For an OBS Media Source, inspect the file selection and Loop setting; for a playlist, check the VLC source and playlist order.
- The sound is silent, clipped, or interrupted: Check the media source’s audio routing and listen to the OBS output before starting. Verify the file itself plays correctly and avoid assuming that a successful YouTube connection proves audio is present.
- Stream health reports a problem: Check the encoder’s video and audio format, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Also check whether the available upload connection can sustain the selected output.
- A new RSS episode is not in the live playlist: Add the enclosure’s media file to the source or update the automation you have built. OBS’s documented media playback is not proof of automatic RSS polling.
- You cannot find YouTube’s RSS option: RSS podcast availability is limited to selected regions. If your aim is a live broadcast, use the encoder workflow instead.
