How to Use Switchboard Live for a 24/7 YouTube Stream of Prerecorded Videos

Switchboard Live distributes a live feed; it does not store or play your prerecorded videos. To run a YouTube stream, use a separate encoder that can play the videos continuously, send that output to the Switchboard workflow, and then take the YouTube destination live. YouTube’s archive and monetization rules still apply, even when the broadcast is made from prerecorded material.

How the setup works

The roles are separate: your encoder plays the video files and sends a live feed; Switchboard receives and routes that feed to YouTube. Switchboard’s FAQ says it does not store prerecorded videos. It names OBS, Ecamm, and Switcher Studio as examples of encoders that can play prerecorded material.

This means the source files must be available to the encoder while it runs. Switchboard is not a cloud video library or a substitute for the playback system. For a continuous broadcast, plan for the encoder and its video source to keep operating, and decide how you will detect and recover from interruptions.

Set up the YouTube channel and encoder

  1. Check YouTube live-stream eligibility. YouTube requires a channel to be eligible to stream, and a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days affects eligibility. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable live streaming ahead of time: YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
  2. Choose a playout encoder. Select an encoder that can play the prerecorded files and transmit its output as a live feed. OBS, Ecamm, and Switcher Studio are examples named by Switchboard. Confirm that the encoder can send using the protocol offered in the Switchboard workflow you intend to use.
  3. Connect the YouTube channel in Switchboard. In the relevant Stream Group, choose Add Destinations, then Connect More. Select YouTube, authorize the correct channel, and enable it in the group. Check the channel carefully if you manage more than one.
  4. Copy the ingest details into the encoder. In the Switchboard workflow, copy the displayed ingest URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming destination settings. Use the protocol shown for that workflow. Keep the stream key private; if you reset it, replace the old key in the encoder before the next broadcast.
  5. Start playback and verify receipt. Start the prerecorded playout in the encoder. In Switchboard, check the confidence monitor for the expected picture and confirm that the receiving status is active. The YouTube destination’s Go Live control remains inactive until Switchboard detects incoming video.
  6. Take the YouTube destination live. Select the connected YouTube destination and choose Go Live. If you plan to use a Stream Group’s Auto-Start setting, configure it before sending video and test the behavior before depending on it for an unattended broadcast.
  7. Monitor the run and protect any recording you need. Switchboard says it does not archive the video. Decide in advance how you will monitor the encoder, feed, and destination, and keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy.

Choose the ingest protocol shown in your workflow

Switchboard’s FAQ describes RTMP ingest. Its workflow documentation also presents RTMP, encrypted RTMPS, and SRT as selectable options, with SRT described for challenging networks. The documentation therefore does not support assuming that every account, workflow, or encoder offers all three. Use the endpoint and protocol actually displayed in the workflow you set up, and verify that your encoder supports that combination.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep the stream key private. Treat a reset as a configuration change: the encoder must be updated with the replacement key before it can send to the workflow again.

Plan for YouTube archives separately from a 24/7 broadcast

A continuous stream and a complete replay are different outcomes. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. If preserving a replay matters, use sessions shorter than 12 hours or record locally rather than relying on one unbroken 24/7 broadcast to produce a complete archive.

Copyright and monetization still apply

Confirm rights to every included element

YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights, and must follow applicable laws and YouTube guidelines. Check the rights for each video, music track, image, and other element before including it in a public stream. The fact that a video is prerecorded does not remove that responsibility.

Do not assume a prerecorded stream qualifies for monetization

YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Its current policy expects original and authentic content; mass-produced or repetitive material may be ineligible. Reused content needs meaningful original commentary, substantial changes, or educational or entertainment value, and reviewers may assess the channel as a whole. On July 15, 2025, YouTube said it clarified its repetitious-content policy and renamed it inauthentic content. Even when live-stream monetization is enabled, YouTube does not guarantee that ad slots will serve.

Optional dedicated-hardware route

YouTube’s verified encoder listing includes AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media and stream it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is an option to investigate if you specifically want dedicated hardware. The available documentation does not establish that it integrates with the Switchboard workflow described above, nor does it establish current availability, pricing, or comparative reliability.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer and encoder running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts.
