YouTube Studio schedules the live broadcast viewers see; an encoder or playback system sends the podcast episodes to it. For a continuous show, you can keep one broadcast and feed running, or schedule separate broadcasts for individual episodes. YouTube does not provide a built-in Studio playlist that automatically rotates prerecorded podcast episodes forever, so episode order and playback must come from an encoder or compatible automation.
Choose how episodes should appear on YouTube
YouTube uses two related pieces: a broadcast is the viewer-facing event and video, while a stream is the incoming audiovisual feed. The official YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes a broadcast as “an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens.” One stream configuration may be reused for multiple broadcasts when the encoder setup is the same. YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams
| Pattern | What viewers get | Best fit | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| One continuous broadcast | One persistent live page and an uninterrupted feed containing multiple episodes | A radio-style podcast channel where a single live destination matters more than separate episode pages | Episodes aired inside the continuous broadcast are not automatically separate broadcast pages or episode archives. |
| Separate scheduled broadcasts | A distinct event page and metadata for each scheduled episode | Shows that want individual upcoming reminders and distinct episode watch pages | You must create and transition between broadcasts; playback still has to be supplied by an encoder or automation. |
| Continuous incoming feed plus separate broadcasts | A persistent feed that can be used as the source for individual broadcast events | Workflows needing recurring broadcast events while retaining a continuously available source feed | It involves more setup and event management than a single live page. YouTube’s API documentation supports this pattern but does not prescribe it for every podcast. |
Decide first whether listeners need one persistent URL or a separate page and archive for each episode. That choice determines how you schedule in Studio; it does not determine how episode files are queued.
Schedule and run the episodes with YouTube Studio and an encoder
- Choose the broadcast pattern. Decide between one continuous broadcast, separate episode broadcasts, or a continuous feed used with separate broadcasts. If you reuse one stream configuration across episodes, keep the encoder settings consistent. The stream/broadcast relationship and reuse conditions are described in the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
- Create the viewer-facing event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select Manage, then choose Schedule Stream. Enter the event details and choose public, private, or unlisted visibility. A scheduled stream may appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, where viewers can select “Notify me.” Check the current Studio labels and event options in Manage live stream settings.
- Connect an encoder. In the event’s stream settings, obtain the YouTube Live server URL and stream key, then enter them in your encoder. YouTube accepts the incoming feed using these connection details. Treat the stream key as a password: if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and replace it in the encoder. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Queue the podcast content outside Studio. Add episode files to the encoder or a compatible playback-automation setup in the intended order. Configure any interstitials, transitions, or holding content you want between episodes. YouTube’s cited documentation covers events, incoming streams, and encoder connection; it does not document a built-in YouTube Studio playlist that automatically rotates prerecorded episodes indefinitely. Verify a playback product’s current playlist, scheduling, and unattended-operation features before relying on it.
- Test before the announced start. Start a test feed and confirm the Studio preview, event title and visibility, audio, video, and captions if used. When ready, start the encoder and follow the Studio control flow or the configured auto-start behavior. YouTube documents auto-start and auto-stop settings; its API reference describes auto-start when streaming begins and auto-stop around one minute after the stream ends. Confirm the settings for your event in YouTube’s live stream settings help and the Live Streaming API overview.
- Plan for the archive. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not mean each podcast segment inside an uninterrupted broadcast becomes its own archive. If every episode needs its own video page and archive, schedule separate broadcasts or publish the episode videos separately. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
One continuous show or separate episode events?
Use one continuous broadcast when continuity is the priority
Use a single live page if the audience should be able to tune in at any time and hear whatever episode is currently playing. Your playback system must handle the queue and keep sending content; Studio provides the event page, not the episode rotation. Think through what listeners will hear between files, how you will handle an empty queue, and whether an episode starting midstream is acceptable.

Schedule separate broadcasts when episodes need their own pages
Create a separate event for each episode when each one needs its own title, schedule, visibility, reminder opportunity, and distinct viewer-facing identity. YouTube’s API supports recurring broadcast events and reuse of stream settings when the encoder configuration remains the same. Creating the events does not itself schedule or change the files played by your encoder, so coordinate the event times with the playback workflow.
Use a continuous feed with separate broadcasts only when the extra structure helps
YouTube’s API documentation also describes a 24/7 feed that remains live while another broadcast is started from that incoming stream. This separates a persistent source feed from individual broadcast events, but it adds API or event-management complexity. Choose it only if that distinction solves a real channel need; the documentation does not claim it is inherently better for podcasts.

Automate broadcasts with the YouTube Live Streaming API
For a recurring schedule managed in software, the YouTube Live Streaming API lets an application create broadcast events and associate them with streams. Its documentation distinguishes broadcast resources from stream resources and describes reusing a stream for broadcasts that share an encoder configuration. The API automates event setup and association; it does not replace the playback system that supplies each episode. Review the YouTube Live Streaming API overview and broadcast and stream concepts before building around it. The concepts page was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC; API behavior and permissions can change, so validate current requirements before deployment.
Common problems and fixes
- The scheduled event is visible, but no video arrives: confirm the encoder is sending to the matching YouTube server URL and stream key, and check that the encoder is actually running.
- The feed appears on the wrong event or fails to connect: verify the event-to-stream association and that you selected the intended stream configuration, especially when reusing a stream for multiple broadcasts.
- Episodes do not play in the expected order: check the encoder or playback automation queue. Scheduling an event in Studio does not queue or reorder prerecorded files.
- The broadcast stops when one episode ends: the playback setup may have reached the end of its queue or stopped sending. Configure the intended next episode or holding content and test the transition before going live.
- Listeners cannot find a separate archive for each episode: a continuous broadcast is one viewer-facing event, not a set of episode broadcasts. Schedule distinct events or publish separate episode videos when individual pages are required.
- The stream key may have been exposed: reset it through the channel’s live settings and update the encoder with the replacement. Do not share the key as ordinary event information.
Or let it run in the cloud
