To play a serial YouTube podcast in story order, open YouTube Studio and go to Content → Podcasts. Edit the podcast, set Default Video Order to oldest to newest, and save. For a show with independent episodes, choose newest to oldest instead.
Set the podcast’s episode order
- In YouTube Studio, open Content, then Podcasts.
- Edit the podcast whose sequence you want to change.
- On the podcast details page, open Default Video Order.
- Choose the order that matches how viewers should watch the episodes, then save.
Choose oldest to newest for a serial show
Use oldest to newest when episodes continue a story, follow a progression, or otherwise need to be consumed sequentially. YouTube’s guidance is to order a serial show from oldest to newest.
Choose newest to oldest for standalone episodes
Use newest to oldest when each episode stands on its own and viewers can start with the latest one. This puts recent episodes first.
Check that the playlist is set up as a podcast
YouTube represents a podcast as a playlist and its episodes as videos in that playlist. The playlist should contain full-length episodes arranged in the order people should consume them. Keep clips, episodes from other shows, and uploads from other channels out of that podcast playlist. If YouTube has automatically classified a playlist as a podcast when that is not what you intended, YouTube Studio provides an option to remove podcast features.

If the order still looks wrong
RSS-imported podcast episodes
For episodes uploaded from an RSS feed, YouTube sorts using the release date supplied in the feed when one is available; without one, it falls back to the YouTube publish date. YouTube does not verify the feed’s release date. The channel’s Videos tab uses YouTube upload dates, so its order may differ from the podcast playlist’s order.
You may be editing a YouTube Show, not a podcast
YouTube Shows have separate ordering behavior. Serial Shows are intended to be watched sequentially and list episodes oldest to newest; non-serial Shows list newest to oldest. If a playlist’s order was manually set, YouTube uses that specified order when assigning episode numbers. Confirm whether you are editing a Podcast or a Show before changing settings.

Review what is in the playlist
- Check that the podcast playlist contains the full-length episodes for that show, rather than clips or material from other shows.
- Verify that the selected default order matches the show format: oldest to newest for a serial sequence, newest to oldest for independent episodes.
- If episodes came through RSS, check their feed release dates as well as their YouTube publish dates; those dates can produce different apparent sequences.
