How to Run Prerecorded Videos on a YouTube Live Stream from an Indian Cloud Server

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live stream by running FFmpeg on a cloud virtual machine (VM), pacing the file in real time, and sending the encoded feed to the stream-specific YouTube ingestion URL and key. This guide covers the do-it-yourself setup from an Indian cloud region, the settings to check, and ways to diagnose common failures. The sample command is illustrative—not a tested recipe—so verify it with a private or unlisted test before relying on it.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream live: it must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance says live streamers must be at least 16. Check the current requirements at YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page.
  • A video file that you have the rights to broadcast, plus a way to place it on the VM or fetch it from storage.
  • A cloud VM with enough CPU capacity to encode the chosen output and a reliable outbound connection. No specific VM size or provider price is established here; test the exact file and settings on the machine you plan to use.
  • FFmpeg built with the required encoders and RTMPS transport support.
  • A YouTube Live event’s ingestion URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password.

A cloud server runs the encoder and sends its output to YouTube. It does not remove the need to check copyright, YouTube’s policies, stream health, or the VM’s capacity.

Choose an Indian cloud region and verify the VM

AWS identifies Mumbai as the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region, ap-south-1, and Google Cloud identifies Mumbai as asia-south1. Those region names do not guarantee that a particular VM family, size, or capacity is available there. Confirm the exact compute option in the provider’s current console before creating the server: AWS region list and Google Cloud locations and location considerations.

For a basic FFmpeg VM, compare current compute availability, sustained encoding capacity, outbound bandwidth limits and charges, media-storage location, and recovery options. The Google Cloud location guide discusses latency, cost, resiliency, and proximity of storage and service components for its managed Live Stream API. Those are useful general location considerations, not mandatory requirements for an ordinary FFmpeg VM. A Mumbai region label alone does not establish throughput, viewer latency, or service capacity; measure from the actual VM.

Create a YouTube Live event and get its stream details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Configure a new stream or choose an appropriate existing stream/event.
  2. In the stream settings, copy the ingestion URL and the stream key associated with that stream. YouTube’s instructions for the stream URL, key, and settings are at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  3. Keep the key out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and shared logs. Use a protected configuration or secrets mechanism on the VM rather than publishing a real key in a command or article.
  4. Choose the latency and other event settings appropriate to your broadcast. The event and encoder must use matching stream details; the key is stream-specific.

Select the ingestion protocol and encoder settings

RTMPS is the usual starting point

For an ordinary prerecorded broadcast, RTMPS is a straightforward protocol to evaluate. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP secured through SSL and specifies port 443; use the exact valid ingestion host and application path provided for the YouTube stream rather than guessing an endpoint. Review YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion requirements.

YouTube also supports HLS and DASH ingestion. Its protocol comparison describes RTMP/RTMPS as options for normal, low, or ultra-low latency, while HLS and DASH are encrypted options that support other codec choices and are generally more suitable for high-resolution use with higher latency. HLS has additional format requirements. Do not switch protocols without configuring FFmpeg to match YouTube’s instructions for that protocol.

Match output to the file and target stream

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 in its general settings table, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Codec acceptance can depend on the selected protocol, so do not assume every codec in the general table works with every ingestion method. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the VM can encode and sustain over its outbound connection. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, and test the actual stream rather than treating a nominal network speed as proof it will work.

The example below uses H.264 video and AAC audio, with FFmpeg’s real-time input pacing and infinite-loop options. Its destination is a placeholder: replace it with the correct RTMPS host, application path, and key from the YouTube stream. This command shape is illustrative, not a tested or provider-verified recipe. Tune resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval/GOP, audio, and pixel format for the source and the selected YouTube profile.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv
  'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_HOST/YOUTUBE_APP/YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY'

-re reads the input at approximately its natural playback rate instead of sending the file as fast as possible. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The command’s RTMPS destination format is only a placeholder pattern; use the exact YouTube ingestion details and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports libx264, AAC encoding, FLV output, and RTMPS transport. AWS publishes a similar recorded-video FFmpeg workflow for Amazon IVS, but its destination is IVS-specific and must not be copied as a YouTube endpoint: AWS’s IVS example.

Run a test, then monitor the live event

  1. Transfer the media file to the VM or make it available from storage, and verify the file path and that FFmpeg can read it.
  2. Start FFmpeg with the selected settings and the YouTube stream’s protected key. Watch the encoder output for connection or encoding errors.
  3. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the preview and inspect the stream-health indicators before starting or sharing the event. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder feed ahead of time and checking the preview.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test first when practical. Check audio, picture, timing, and whether the video loops as intended. If recording locally as well, verify the archive.
  5. Monitor the stream and the VM during the broadcast. YouTube’s operational guidance covers preflight preparation, failover testing where applicable, and ongoing audio/video monitoring: YouTube live-streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common problems

RTMPS connection fails

Check that the destination uses the rtmps scheme, the host and application path match the YouTube stream’s ingestion details, and the connection uses port 443. Verify that the key is current and that the VM can make outbound connections. YouTube identifies an incorrect host, port, or SSL setup among common connection-error causes in its RTMPS guide.

YouTube flags stream health or encoder settings

Check the protocol, codec, CBR configuration, chosen bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and keyframe interval. Keep the interval at the recommended two seconds where possible and no longer than four seconds. Compare the actual output with YouTube’s current encoder settings, then use Live Control Room’s preview and health indicators to narrow down the issue.

The video freezes or stops at the end of the file

Confirm that the input file has not ended and that looping is intended. For a continuously repeated file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option illustrates an infinite loop; if the file is meant to play once, reaching its end is expected.

The VM drops frames or cannot sustain the stream

Inspect CPU load, encoder output, and outbound network performance while streaming the actual file. Reduce the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the machine or connection cannot sustain the selected profile, then test again. Recheck provider bandwidth limits and transfer charges; a region’s name is not a performance guarantee.

Check copyright and YouTube policy before broadcasting

Having a video file does not necessarily give you permission to broadcast its music, footage, or other included material. Confirm that you own or have the necessary rights for every component, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-streaming rules before scheduling a long-running stream. Repeating a recording does not change the rights status of its contents or guarantee that YouTube will treat the channel as eligible for monetization. For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.

DIY cloud VM or managed cloud looping?

The FFmpeg method gives you control over the VM, command, and encoder settings, but you are responsible for provisioning the machine, protecting credentials, testing capacity, and recovering a failed process or connection. If you want a service that runs uploaded videos as a YouTube live stream without keeping a VM or home computer on, StreamNeo is the managed alternative: one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with a free first day and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your recording to StreamNeo.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from its cloud service.

Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality-based tiers; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not live camera feeds. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans for current billing options. Upload-time calculator and cloud-vs-PC cost calculator can help with planning. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
