A 2026 report describes this mini-breath alongside another lengthening feature: extra pulses at the end of the second note.
How does the short breath extend the call?
The call’s timing is the key. In the recordings described by the researchers, the audible notes were produced during exhalation. Between the two parts of a bi-note, the gecko took a very brief, silent inspiration—approximately one tenth of a second according to the report. That pause lets the animal replenish air before producing the second note, rather than trying to voice continuously through one uninterrupted exhalation.
- First note: the gecko produces the opening note while exhaling.
- Mini-breath: it briefly inhales in the silence between notes.
- Second note: it resumes calling on exhalation, sometimes adding terminal pulses that make this note longer.
The reported sequence offers a respiratory explanation for how the two-part call can be extended. The authors summarize their finding this way: “Calls were produced exclusively during expiration at a constant rate, supporting the hypothesis that respiratory constraints limit call duration.” This is the authors’ interpretation of the recorded pattern, not evidence that every call or every tokay uses the same strategy.
What did the study examine?
The report describes acoustic analysis and pose estimation of spontaneous advertisement calling in seven captive male tokay geckos (Gekko gecko), represented in 16 video clips. The 16 clips are not 16 separate animals. The reported observations concern this small captive sample; they do not establish how often the mechanisms occur in wild geckos, across populations or seasons, or in other species.

How do terminal pulses add duration?
The mini-breath is not the only reported feature associated with a longer call. The account says the second note can be lengthened by adding pulses at its end. It describes the acoustic signature of those terminal pulses as consistent with a vocal-fry-like register. That is an interpretation from sound patterns: the report does not establish that vocal-fold motion was directly visualized.
What is observed, and what remains a hypothesis?
Breathing and sound
The reported evidence combines acoustic patterns with estimates of body movement from video. It supports the sequence of expiration, a brief inspiration between notes, and a second exhaled note. The authors propose that respiratory limits help constrain call duration and that the calls may signal respiratory capacity; the small sample does not establish how reliably call duration measures that capacity.

Ear-opening movement
The report also notes that the ear openings narrowed during vocalizations. The authors suggest this could protect hearing from the gecko’s own loud calls, but the protective function remains untested. Narrowing was observed; hearing protection was proposed as an explanation.
How does this fit earlier work on tokay calls?
Earlier research discussed in a Springer handbook chapter found that tokay geckos can alter binote duration in background noise, apparently making calls easier to detect. The chapter characterizes that response as longer calls rather than increased call level. A separate 2026 account describes earlier work as involving longer, louder call types, so the precise relationship between duration and loudness should not be generalized without consulting the original noise study.

These findings address different questions. Earlier work concerned how calls change in noisy surroundings; the 2026 report focuses on the breathing pattern associated with spontaneous advertisement calls. Tokay advertisement calls are also described as rattles followed by repeated binotes, alongside other vocalizations such as bark or intimidation calls, distress calls, and softer mating-display calls.
