mpv can be a better media player than VLC if you want configurable playback controls, scripting, and video-output options; VLC is often the easier choice if you want a familiar player for files, discs, and streams. Neither is a universal winner, and the available documentation does not establish that mpv is faster or produces better playback on every device.
What makes mpv different from VLC?
mpv is a free, open-source, cross-platform media player. Its project describes support for a wide variety of media formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitles. Choose mpv if you want control over playback
mpv is the stronger fit if you are comfortable with a spare interface and want to tailor how playback works. Its documented input configuration, scripting, video-output capabilities, and hardware decoding give technically curious viewers more room to adapt the player to their workflow. mpv project overview mpv reference manual

The trade-off is that mpv does not present itself as a conventional full-GUI application. If you expect a discoverable menu for every feature, its minimal approach may take more adjustment than VLC’s familiar style.
Choose VLC if you want a general-purpose player that is ready to use

That makes VLC the safer default for someone who values immediate ease of use over extensive playback configuration. It does not prove that VLC is better for every format or device; compare the two with the media you actually use.
How to get mpv or VLC on Windows
Installing mpv
Start at mpv’s official installation page and follow its Windows guidance. Check who provides the build: the project says Windows binary packages are unofficial third-party builds, except for first-party CI builds. Those CI builds are primarily for testing and may omit features, so they are not necessarily the best choice for everyday use.

Installing VLC
Use VideoLAN’s official VLC page for its Windows download route. Choosing the publisher’s own route makes it easier to distinguish the official download from third-party packages.

The project documentation describes mpv’s capabilities, including hardware decoding and video-output options, but the sources cited here do not establish a universal performance advantage over VLC. No comparable benchmark or device-specific test is provided for speed, memory use, scaling, interpolation, color management, or HDR. Your results can depend on the file, settings, hardware, and operating system, so test both players with your own media rather than assuming one will look or run better.
