Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad, has already expanded its southern terminal, but the next major passenger-capacity increase is still at the proposal stage. The airport’s existing integrated terminal is rated at 34 million passengers per annum (MPPA); submitted plans would raise the southern precinct’s target to 40 MPPA and add a northern terminal to bring the combined proposed capacity to 60 MPPA. The operator’s separate master plan envisages more than 100 MPPA over the long term.
What does the Hyderabad airport upgrade include?
The term “upgrade” covers several different stages, not one newly announced construction contract. The eastern and western parts of the existing terminal have been expanded, cargo facilities and passenger-information services have been added, and the airport operator has submitted plans for further terminal and airside development.
The key distinction is between completed facilities and proposals under regulatory consideration. The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA), in a consultation paper dated 19 June 2026, examined GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited’s (GHIAL’s) plans for the 2026–31 Fourth Control Period. The paper invites stakeholder comments; it is not a final tariff order or confirmation that every proposed project has construction approval.
How do the 34, 40, 60 and 100 MPPA figures differ?
These figures describe different scopes and stages. MPPA means million passengers per annum; it is a design or planned capacity figure, not the number of passengers the airport currently handles.

What has already been completed at the southern terminal?
AERA reports that the eastern terminal expansion opened in November 2023 and the western expansion in September 2024. Following those works, the integrated terminal totals 379,370 square metres and has a stated design capacity of 34 MPPA. AERA identifies 258,089 square metres as the added expansion area; that is distinct from the total area of the resulting integrated terminal.
GHIAL’s next southern-precinct proposal aims to increase the existing terminal’s stated capacity from 34 to 40 MPPA. The measures considered in AERA’s paper include baggage-handling and baggage-management upgrades, transfer-baggage storage, check-in reconfiguration, more security-screening capacity, greater flexibility at baggage reclaim, additional aircraft stands and related operational work. AERA’s assessment says stable performance may be maintained at about 37 MPPA after interventions, while reaching 40 MPPA depends on process improvements and spreading demand across peak periods.

What is proposed for the northern precinct?
GHIAL’s submission, as reproduced in AERA’s consultation paper, proposes a passenger terminal of about 225,000 square metres with a design capacity of 20 MPPA. It would handle domestic and international passengers and be arranged to allow modular expansion. The submission lists these terminal provisions:
- Four entry gates and 112 check-in counters.
- Sixteen automatic tray return system (ATRS) lanes and 19 fixed-link passenger bridges.
- Seven bus gates and eight baggage-claim belts.
- Thirty immigration counters.
The northern development is broader than a terminal building. The submitted precinct plan also includes a new runway north of the existing runway, taxiways, aprons, navigational aids, an elevated cross-taxiway and other airside connections, as well as access and landside work. These are submission details under consultation, not a list of facilities already open or confirmed as under construction.

When will the northern terminal open?
The available AERA consultation paper describes GHIAL’s capital plan for the Fourth Control Period, which runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2031, but it does not establish a firm opening date for the northern terminal or a delivery date for the full master plan. AERA says it will consider evidence-based stakeholder comments before issuing a final tariff order for aeronautical services. The consultation stage should not be read as final approval of every project or a guaranteed construction timetable.
What else has changed for cargo and passengers?
Cargo Terminal 2
GHIAL announced Cargo Terminal 2 as commissioned on 18 May 2026. The operator gives its area as 16,864 square metres and its initial handling capacity as around 50,000 metric tonnes per annum, with dedicated space intended to allow capacity to double to 100,000 tonnes. GHIAL describes separate inbound and outbound zones, multi-level racking, shipment build-up and breakdown areas, and temperature-controlled space for pharmaceuticals and perishables.

Information kiosks and terminal maps
In August 2025, GMR/GHIAL announced a rollout of ten virtual information kiosks across check-in, boarding, arrivals and baggage-claim areas, alongside interactive online terminal maps. Announced functions include real-time flight information, 3D navigation, emergency support, Wi-Fi access for international travellers and feedback options. The announcement describes the services and intended functions; it does not establish a measured reduction in queues or improvement in passenger satisfaction.

GHIAL says the expanded terminal received LEED Platinum under LEED v4 with 84 points. Its 2025 certification announcement lists high-efficiency HVAC, insulation, occupancy-sensor LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, low-flow plumbing, drought-tolerant landscaping, paperless e-boarding and self-baggage drop among the measures. This is the operator’s account of the terminal’s certification and features; it does not by itself establish a quantified reduction in airport-wide emissions.

How should travellers interpret the upgrade plans?
For passengers, the terminal expansion and announced information tools are existing changes, while the further capacity increases remain contingent on proposals and later decisions. The 40 MPPA figure refers to the southern precinct’s enhancement case; 60 MPPA includes the proposed northern terminal; and the over-100-MPPA figure belongs to the airport’s long-range, phased master plan. None of those capacity figures alone establishes a particular wait time, fare, or travel experience.
