AMF-U-Net is a research model for segmenting brain tumours in three dimensions from four MRI sequences: T1, contrast-enhanced T1 (T1ce), T2 and FLAIR. It uses a separate encoder for each sequence, learns how much to weight each modality at multiple scales, and reconstructs tumour regions with attention-guided decoders. In a 2026 internal validation evaluation, the authors report a macro-average Dice score of 0.815 across whole tumour, tumour core and enhancing tumour. Those figures measure segmentation agreement in that evaluation—not clinical benefit or readiness for patient care.
How does AMF-U-Net use four MRI sequences?
The model takes T1, T1ce, T2 and FLAIR images as complementary inputs. Rather than combining them into a single input stream at the outset, AMF-U-Net processes each modality through its own encoder. This lets the network extract features specific to each sequence before deciding how to combine them.
At each encoder scale, a Modality Fusion Module assigns softmax-normalised importance weights to the modality features and fuses them. In practical terms, the model can learn to give different sequences different influence at different feature scales instead of treating every sequence as equally informative everywhere.
The fused features then feed attention-guided decoders. Attention gates act on skip connections to suppress activations the authors consider less relevant while the decoder reconstructs tumour regions and their boundaries. Residual connections are also part of the architecture; the authors describe them as supporting training stability.

What does the study report about its data and validation?
The 2026 Scientific Reports article by A. Anushya, Rasha Almarshdi, Bedour Alrashidi and co-authors reports using the Brain Tumor Segmentation 2023 and UCSF Preoperative Diffuse Glioma MRI (UCSF-PDGM) datasets. The abstract describes harmonising the data through modality mappings and spatial normalisation, using source-aware patient-level splits, and transforming labels into four mutually exclusive classes: background, necrotic/non-enhancing tumour, oedema and enhancing tumour.

Dice measures overlap between a predicted segmentation and its reference; higher values indicate greater overlap. The macro-average is the reported average across the three named regions, not a separate clinical outcome.
How should its comparison with other models be read?
The paper says that, on the same data split, AMF-U-Net compared favourably with 3D U-Net, nnU-Net, UNETR and Swin UNETR on overlap and boundary-distance measures. The accessible article summary does not provide comparator-specific scores, so it does not support calculating margins or claiming that AMF-U-Net is universally better. Any reported advantage is specific to the study’s data preparation, split and implementations.

What are the limits of the reported results?
- The reported scores are from an internal patient-level validation cohort after dataset harmonisation. They do not establish performance at unseen institutions or on different scanners.
- The study evaluates segmentation metrics, not diagnosis, treatment decisions, survival or other patient outcomes. It therefore does not show that using AMF-U-Net improves care or replaces radiologist review.
- The abstract describes a loss combining class-weight-balanced Dice and categorical cross-entropy to address overlap and class imbalance. It does not establish the precise relative contribution of each component; the accessible summary provides no full ablation analysis.
The paper’s authors stress that their contribution is the combined architecture rather than any one component: “Hence, the contribution here should be regarded as the combination of all three innovations, and not just as the introduction of the individual innovations.” The article summary does not establish a public release of code, trained weights or a downloadable model.
