Yes. YouTube says eligible channels can earn from ads shown during a live stream when monetization is enabled for that stream. Its live-ad guidance does not make viewers watching the later archive a condition of live ad delivery. But an ad slot is only an opportunity: YouTube does not guarantee an ad will run, and the official guidance reviewed does not confirm whether hiding or deleting an archive affects the original broadcast’s ad eligibility.
What “skip the archive” means
Not watching a stream’s replay is different from skipping an ad while watching live. During a live ad, YouTube says viewers who see the ad return to the live stream when it ends or if they skip the ad. That describes an interruption in live playback—not whether a viewer later watches the replay. See YouTube’s live ad guidance.
What must be in place for live ads
- The channel must be monetized, and monetization must be enabled for the live stream. For Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue on live or long-form videos, creators must also accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube may review content for advertiser suitability, and enabling monetization does not ensure an ad will appear. See YouTube’s monetization options.
- Ad delivery is discretionary. YouTube states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Its system considers factors including viewer experience, creator earnings and advertiser values; if an ad does not run, viewers continue watching.
- Live and replay revenue are distinct viewing contexts. Creators can inspect live-stream and live-replay ad revenue in YouTube Analytics. The guidance explains live ad delivery, but does not say that replay views are required for ads to have run during the broadcast.
Choose how live mid-rolls are handled
| Approach | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube inserts mid-roll opportunities and recommends this setting. It says automatic breaks use natural breakpoints and viewer-experience optimizations. | Less manual timing control; YouTube still decides whether an ad actually serves. |
| Scheduled | You can schedule breaks every 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30 minutes. | YouTube cautions that scheduled choices may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode. |
| Manual | You insert a break yourself, which can help coordinate it with a natural pause. YouTube mentions an Elgato Stream Deck as an option for inserting ads. | Requires active control; a Stream Deck is optional, not required for monetization. YouTube cautions that manual choices may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode. |
These are opportunities to show ads, not promises of a particular number of ads or amount of revenue. YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled compared with channels without the feature, across 207 countries. This is YouTube’s platform-reported average from January 2024—not a guarantee, a causal estimate for an individual channel or a revenue forecast. Details are in YouTube’s live monetization guidance.
A 24/7 broadcast may not produce a complete replay
Live ad eligibility and archive capture are separate operational questions. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends keeping a local recording backup. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a reliable way to create one complete replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Does hiding or deleting the archive change live ad eligibility?
The official guidance cited here discusses live ad delivery, replay analytics and archive controls separately. It does not directly establish whether making a particular archive private or deleting it changes the original broadcast’s ad eligibility. Do not assume that archive visibility either determines or has no effect on eligibility; the relationship is not confirmed by those pages.

For a do-it-yourself broadcast, run the live stream from a computer or other streaming setup, keep the streaming software and internet connection active, and enable monetization and the ad-break approach you want in YouTube’s live controls. For a continuous stream, plan for power, connectivity, software interruptions and the possibility that a stream longer than 12 hours will not be archived. Keep a local recording if you need a backup of the content.
