To run a 24/7 lo-fi radio stream with OBS, prepare a YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, use music and visuals cleared for both livestreaming and any archive, build an OBS scene, connect OBS to a YouTube broadcast with its stream key, and test the full setup before making it public. OBS sends the feed from your computer; keeping it live continuously also depends on that computer, its power, playback and internet connection. Neither OBS nor YouTube promises uninterrupted 24/7 uptime.
Before you set up OBS
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; the streamer must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before building the setup, since restrictions can prevent a launch.
Clear the music and visuals
Use original material or obtain permission that specifically covers your intended livestream and any saved archive. Keep the relevant license terms and permissions accessible. A track being online, described as “copyright free,” or licensed for a different use does not establish that it is cleared for your stream.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, a placeholder image, interruption or termination. YouTube says even a licensed stream may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist; ask the owner about allowlisting when applicable. If you archive the broadcast, Content ID claims can be made after the livestream ends. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. Copyright requirements vary with the catalog, country and intended use, so do not treat the absence of an immediate claim as proof of permission.

Decide whether to keep an archive
Archiving gives viewers a recording to watch later, but it also means the finished broadcast can receive Content ID claims after it ends. Make that decision with the rights for both the live use and the archive in mind.
Build a lo-fi scene in OBS

Install OBS Studio from the official OBS Project. OBS is free, open source and usable commercially without restrictions, according to its help portal.

Create a scene and add a music playback source along with a visual you have permission to use: for example, a still image or a looped animation. Check the audio meters while playback runs, and confirm the picture is visible, framed correctly and not unintentionally cropped.

Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point for basic output settings. Then check the encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s recommendations and what your computer and upload connection can sustain.

For a mostly static lo-fi visual, 720p/30 or 1080p/30 is a reasonable practical starting target if your computer and connection handle it. This is not a YouTube-required lo-fi preset. Prioritize a steady feed over choosing the highest available resolution.
Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes every two seconds (no more than four seconds apart), and up to 60 frames per second. Its table gives these recommended bitrates for the two practical 30 fps targets below. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of stable delivery; the right setting depends on codec, computer capacity and connection reliability.

These figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings table retrieved October 3, 2026. The same guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, including stereo options. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before launch; platform recommendations can change.
Do not set bitrate at the very limit of your measured upload capacity. YouTube advises selecting settings the connection can reliably sustain, testing first and monitoring stream health. Leave headroom for normal connection variation, and use representative audio and motion in your test rather than judging by a still screen alone.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the broadcast

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Copy its stream key. Treat the key as private: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your channel.

In OBS, select YouTube as the stream service or configure the platform connection. If using the key-based setup, paste the stream key into OBS and confirm the service and output settings.

Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube’s preview or control room. Check that both audio and video are present and behaving as intended.

Use the live controls in YouTube Studio to start the viewer-facing broadcast, following the prompts shown in the current interface. OBS sends the encoder feed directly from your computer to YouTube; YouTube hosts the broadcast. Button labels and screen layouts may change, so use the current control-room prompts rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

Test and operate it as a 24/7 stream
Run a private or non-public test
Before launch, test the whole chain in a private or otherwise non-public broadcast. Include the actual playback source and representative movement, then confirm the audio does not stop, the picture is correct, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming feed. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
Watch connection and encoder health
Check OBS’s dropped-frame count and connection indicator, as well as YouTube’s stream health. OBS says rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection indicator can indicate an unstable connection or one unable to sustain the selected bitrate; OBS drops frames to avoid buffering. Reduce bitrate or improve connection stability if this happens, then retest.
Plan for the local dependencies
A local OBS stream runs only while the host computer stays on and working, its power and internet remain available, and the playback source continues. Operating-system behavior can also affect a long-running setup. A dedicated mini PC is optional if you do not want to tie up your main computer, but no specific model or minimum specification is established here. The official guidance cited here does not prescribe a complete restart supervisor, redundant power or network design, or a guaranteed recovery time.
