In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, select a stream from the Stream tab or Manage, then choose Edit > Monetization. Confirm that Monetization is On and check which mid-roll option is selected: Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. YouTube’s instructions describe its general live-stream controls; the exact layout and availability may vary by account, so they do not establish that every India-based channel sees identical options.
Find the livestream’s mid-roll controls
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go live.
- Open the Stream tab to start a stream, or select a scheduled stream under Manage.
- At the top of the stream setup, choose Edit > Monetization.
- Check that Monetization is On, then inspect the live ad setting for Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. YouTube’s general instructions are at Monetize your live stream.
The stream’s Monetization On/Off state and its mid-roll mode are separate checks. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on when monetization is enabled for a livestream; mid-roll behavior depends on the selected mode.
What each mid-roll setting does
| Mode | How timing is set | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube selects natural breakpoints. You choose Low, Medium, or High ad frequency. | Viewers may receive ads at different times. YouTube also describes features to limit disruption for channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts or Super Chats/Stickers, and snooze mid-rolls for everyone during high engagement. |
| Scheduled | You choose an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | The interval controls when breaks are scheduled, not whether an ad will serve. |
| Manual | You insert breaks while the stream is live. | If you do not insert a break, YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served in this mode. |
YouTube says Scheduled or Manual settings may have lower earnings potential than Automatic. That is platform guidance, not a forecast for any individual channel. See YouTube’s live monetization guidance.
Insert or delay ads while a stream is live
Insert a manual mid-roll
Manual insertion is done on a computer in Live Control Room in YouTube Studio. Open the live stream’s controls and use the ad insertion control when you want a break. YouTube’s step-by-step instructions are in Manage mid-roll ads in live streams.

Temporarily delay automatic mid-rolls
In Live Control Room, Delay ads pauses automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. YouTube displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while this delay feature is on.
Understand what an enabled ad slot means
An enabled or scheduled slot does not guarantee an ad. YouTube’s ad systems decide whether a slot serves one; viewers who do not receive an ad continue watching the stream. In YouTube Help’s words, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” This also means an ad setting does not promise identical timing or ad delivery to every viewer.

YouTube reports an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. The comparison covered 207 countries in January 2024. It is a group average, not a promised result for an individual creator, channel, audience, or India-based stream.
Set defaults for future livestreams
Monetized channels without rights management can set defaults for future livestreams in Live Control Room settings. YouTube says channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level settings. This default is separate from checking or editing an individual stream.
