To caption a continuous YouTube podcast stream, either enable YouTube’s English automatic captions for that individual stream (if your channel has the feature and you use normal latency) or send captions from a compatible encoder or captioning workflow. Then check captions in a live viewer session and treat the saved video as a separate task: live automatic captions do not carry over after the stream ends, and YouTube generates a new caption track for the recording.
Choose a live caption method
YouTube documents two main routes: automatic captions generated during the live stream, and captions supplied by your encoder or compatible caption software. Which works depends on your channel’s access to the feature, language and latency needs, and whether you can maintain an external caption feed.
| Consideration | YouTube automatic live captions | Supplied caption feed |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Feature availability depends on channel rollout. | Requires compatible encoder output or caption software and a configured feed. |
| Language and latency | YouTube documents English and normal-latency streaming; low or ultra-low latency can affect availability. | Depends on the caption source and workflow. Verify language support and compatibility with the provider or software. |
| Accuracy and review | Recognition is automatic and can be affected by audio conditions, accents, dialects, names, and overlapping speech. | A separate caption workflow gives you another production route, but the sources do not establish that any particular provider is best or guarantee accuracy. |
| Restart continuity | YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee that caption settings persist through every restart in a 24/7 workflow. | YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee that an external feed reconnects after a stream session restarts. Test your actual encoder, stream key or session behavior, and caption service. |
| Saved recording | Live automatic captions do not remain after the stream ends; YouTube generates a separate VOD caption track. | Plan separately how captions will be added to and checked on the saved video. |
Set up YouTube automatic live captions
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream.
- Open the stream settings and turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Set the video language to English.
- Start or preview the stream and confirm captions appear in an actual viewer session before relying on them.
This is a per-stream setup, not a channel-wide switch. YouTube’s documented live automatic-caption path is limited to English, requires normal latency, and may not be available to every channel. See YouTube’s automatic captioning guidance for current eligibility and controls.
Improve the conditions for speech recognition
YouTube warns that mispronunciations, accents, dialects, background noise, poor audio, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages can affect automatic captions. For a podcast, keep speech clear, reduce cross-talk and background audio, and check names and specialist terms in the resulting captions. These are practical responses to the listed recognition limitations, not a guarantee of a particular accuracy level.

Send a live caption feed instead
If native automatic captions are unavailable or do not suit the production, YouTube documents embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions and caption ingestion over HTTP. The options require compatible caption output and should be tested with the exact always-on workflow you intend to use.
Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In the stream settings, turn on Closed captions and select Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder to include EIA 608/CEA 708 captions, supplied from a supported file format or in real time.
- Check that captions appear in the live output and that your encoder continues sending them after a reconnect or restart.
YouTube says it currently supports one caption track for embedded 608/708 captions. Consult its live caption requirements and confirm that your encoder’s caption format matches the current requirements.

Caption ingestion over HTTP
- Enable closed captions for the live event in YouTube’s event workflow.
- Copy the event’s signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Enter that URL in compatible caption software or your caption provider’s workflow, then verify captions in the live stream.
YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed. Its guidance recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for the described live-event workflow; decide whether that delay suits your show and confirm the current event setup in YouTube’s live caption requirements.
YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as examples in its requirements guidance. These are examples, not a current endorsement or confirmation that a product is suitable for a continuous stream. Check versions, service terms, language support, availability, and compatibility directly before choosing one.

Verify captions through stream interruptions
A continuous stream adds an operational question that a one-off event may not: whether captions resume when the stream session, encoder, or caption feed reconnects. YouTube’s cited guidance does not promise restart-proof continuity for either method.
- Test the live caption method on the same stream setup you plan to use.
- Simulate the restarts and reconnects your workflow may experience; check both the video and caption feed afterward.
- Have a recovery procedure for the caption source as well as the video stream.
- Recheck captions in a viewer session after making changes to the event, encoder, or caption provider.
Caption the saved podcast video separately
YouTube states that live automatic captions will not remain on the video after the live stream ends. It generates a new caption track later through its VOD process, and that track may differ from the live captions. In YouTube Studio, add a caption file, enter captions manually, or review and edit the automatically generated track. Make this part of the publishing process for each finished broadcast segment or recording. See YouTube’s guidance on automatic captions and adding or editing captions.

What accessible captions need to convey
Captions should communicate meaningful audio, not only transcribe spoken words. W3C guidance describes captions as including speaker identification and significant non-speech audio. For a podcast, that may mean identifying which host is speaking and including laughter, music, or other audio cues when they convey meaning.
W3C WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.2.4, Captions (Live), is Level AA and states: “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.” The W3C explains the live-caption criterion; its prerecorded-caption guidance also identifies omitted dialogue or important sound effects as a failure example. A speech transcript alone does not establish that captions are complete or that a particular publisher meets every applicable legal obligation. Those obligations depend on the publisher, jurisdiction, and context.
