Start in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room: confirm monetization is on for the active stream, then check its mid-roll setting. In Manual mode, you must insert ad breaks yourself; without them, YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served. Even with breaks, ad delivery is not guaranteed. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not identify looping footage itself as a cause.
Check the active stream’s monetization and ad mode
- Turn on monetization for the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select the stream’s Edit settings, and check Monetization. It must be On for live ads to serve. Do not assume a channel default carried over: inspect the active stream directly.
- Find the mid-roll setting. Check whether the stream uses Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual ads. The mode determines who places breaks and whether you need to add them.
What each mid-roll mode does

YouTube says earnings potential may be lower with Scheduled or Manual than with Automatic. That is not a guarantee of earnings for any particular stream.
A break is an opportunity, not a guaranteed ad
YouTube Help states: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Whether an opportunity results in an ad depends on factors including slot quality, advertiser demand, and viewer experience. An ad may serve to some viewers while others continue watching without one, so one viewer’s experience does not prove that the stream’s ad settings are broken.
YouTube reported in January 2024 an average “over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour” among creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls, compared with channels that had not turned them on, averaged across 207 countries. This is a platform-reported comparison, not a forecast or promised result for an individual channel.

Check how the viewer opened the stream
If someone watches through an external-site YouTube player embed with auto-start enabled, YouTube says live-stream ads are turned off for that stream. Compare playback with the stream opened directly on YouTube. If ads appear there but not in the auto-start embed, playback context may explain the difference.
Review eligibility and content restrictions
- Confirm the channel and active stream are eligible and monetized.
- Age-restricted content can be ineligible for monetization.
- Content that does not comply with YouTube’s advertiser-friendly guidelines can receive limited or no ads.
These checks distinguish an ad-setting issue from an eligibility or content limitation; a correctly configured break cannot override those limits.

Does looping itself stop mid-roll ads?
YouTube’s reviewed live-ad guidance explains ad modes, configuration, and delivery, but does not say that repeating or looping footage by itself prevents mid-rolls. Looping is therefore not an established cause in that guidance. Check the active stream’s settings, playback context, and eligibility before attributing missing ads to the loop.
