How to Build a 24/7 YouTube Music Stream Using a Spare PC in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a 24/7 YouTube music stream from a spare PC with OBS: loop rights-cleared local audio or video, connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room, and keep the PC and internet connection available while it broadcasts. First confirm the channel is eligible to stream, then test the setup before relying on it. This approach depends on your home power and upload connection; a computer left running cannot prevent a network or power interruption.

Before you start: check channel eligibility and music rights

Confirm YouTube Live is available to your channel

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16 years old. Enable livestreaming and allow time for any setup or eligibility checks before you plan to launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Use music you are allowed to livestream

Have the necessary rights to use every track in a livestream. Access to a song through a music service, or permission to use it in a different context, does not by itself establish livestream rights. If a rights holder has licensed the music but uses Content ID, ask them to allowlist your channel: YouTube warns that a stream can still be interrupted by matching otherwise. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright matching.

Prepare the spare PC and media

Organize files you can legally stream

Put the audio or music videos you intend to play in an accessible local folder. Keep the files available for the entire broadcast, and make sure your planned playlist has no track for which you lack the required livestream rights. OBS can play a local file through a Media Source, or use VLC Video for a playlist; VLC must be installed for that source to appear in OBS. OBS documents these options at Media Sources.

Plan what happens if the PC or connection stops

A spare PC is still a local encoder: it needs power, the media files, OBS running, and a working upload connection. YouTube cautions that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” If brief power interruptions are a concern, a UPS for the PC and router is an optional backup to investigate, not a guaranteed solution. No particular UPS size or runtime is established here; choose and test backup equipment against your own load and conditions.

Set up a looping source in OBS

  1. Create a scene. Open OBS and add a scene for the music broadcast.
  2. For one local file, add Media Source. In the scene’s Sources, select + and choose Media Source. Select the local audio or video file and enable Loop.
  3. For multiple files, use VLC Video. Add the VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first if the source is not available.
  4. Check the scene before connecting. Confirm the selected file plays and that the playlist advances and loops as intended. OBS’s documented media-source controls are described at obsproject.com/kb/media-sources.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Start a stream setup in YouTube and obtain its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
  2. Connect OBS as the encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key as prompted. Prefer YouTube’s RTMPS ingest where it is available.
  3. Set encoder parameters for the content and connection. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264 video and calls for CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance lists AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps. These are platform settings recommendations, not minimum hardware specifications. Use YouTube’s current bitrate and resolution guidance for your chosen quality rather than assuming one bitrate suits every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming guidance.
  4. Match output to reliable upload capacity. Measure your upload connection and choose settings it can sustain, rather than choosing quality based only on download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. For example, if your measured upload capacity varies, do not configure the stream to consume all of it; leave room for fluctuations and other network use. Guidance is at YouTube’s network guidance.

Test, launch, and monitor the stream

  1. Run a test with the actual files and settings. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public or relying on it for continuous playback.
  2. Verify the viewer experience. Check the stream from the channel’s watch page, including audio level, picture, and whether the playlist advances. YouTube’s encoder setup and troubleshooting guidance covers testing, preview, and monitoring.
  3. Keep the local system available. During the broadcast, leave OBS running, keep the PC powered, and avoid sleep or automatic shutdown that would stop the encoder. Keep the network connection available as well; the PC alone cannot restore a failed home connection.
  4. Monitor after launch. Watch Live Control Room stream health and the public playback. If you change encoder settings, test again rather than assuming the change improved stability.

Decide whether you need a replay

A 24/7 live broadcast is not a reliable way to create one complete YouTube replay. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That is an archive limitation, not a limit on how long the broadcast can remain live. If a replay matters, consider shorter sessions and make a local recording with enough storage; check that the local recording is actually being saved. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance and its stream setup and archive checks.

Common problems and fixes

  • OBS does not show VLC Video: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the Sources menu again. VLC is required for OBS’s VLC source.
  • The file plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a multi-file source, enable Loop Playlist.
  • Stream health degrades or the stream breaks: Check upload capacity, reduce the configured stream bitrate or output quality to a level your connection can sustain, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Check for competing upload activity and monitor Live Control Room.
  • YouTube interrupts the broadcast over music: Stop using the matched material unless you have the necessary rights. If the rights holder has licensed the use, ask them to allowlist the channel; a claimed license alone may not prevent Content ID from interrupting the stream.
  • The expected replay is missing or incomplete: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use shorter sessions if an archive is important and verify a local recording rather than relying on the live object to become a full replay.
  • The stream stops during a power cut: The local PC and network equipment need power. A tested UPS may help with brief interruptions, but runtime depends on the equipment and load; it does not solve an internet outage.
