Run your encoder on the remote Linux server inside a named tmux session. Start the stream there, detach with Ctrl+b followed by d, then close SSH. The encoder can continue running because it remains attached to the remote tmux session—not to your laptop’s terminal.
This protects against an SSH disconnect; it does not restart a crashed encoder or preserve it through a server reboot. For unattended recovery, use a service manager such as systemd and verify its behavior on your host.
Keep the encoder running with tmux
Run tmux on the same remote Linux machine that runs FFmpeg or another encoder. Starting tmux on your laptop does not protect a process running on the server. The tmux manual documents sessions that remain available after an accidental SSH disconnection and can be reattached later: tmux manual.
- Connect to the remote host. SSH into the Linux machine where the encoder will run.
- Check for tmux. Run
tmux -V. If the command is unavailable, install tmux using the package manager for your distribution or ask the server administrator; installation commands vary by operating system. - Create or reconnect to a named session. Run
tmux new-session -A -s youtube-live. This creates theyoutube-livesession if it does not exist, or attaches to it if it already exists. If you attach to an existing session, inspect its terminal before entering commands so you do not send input to an unexpected process. - Start the configured encoder inside tmux. Use the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup explains how to configure the encoder with those values: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Treat the stream key as a secret; do not publish it or expose it in screenshots or shared command history.
- Confirm YouTube is receiving the stream. Check the encoder output and the expected incoming preview or status in Live Control Room. A running tmux session alone does not prove that media is reaching YouTube.
- Detach without stopping the encoder. Press Ctrl+b, release the keys, then press d. You return to the SSH shell while the remote tmux session remains available. You can then exit SSH or close the local terminal.
- Return to the session later. SSH into the same host using the same account, run
tmux list-sessions, and then runtmux attach-session -t youtube-live. If the session is missing, check that you connected to the right host and account and whether host policies terminate user processes at logout.
What tmux does—and does not—keep alive
Detaching separates your terminal connection from the remote session. It does not make the encoder immune to failure. A process crash, server reboot or termination, and host policies that kill user processes can still stop the stream or remove the session.

YouTube receives media from the encoder. Its documentation says that stopping content transmission from the encoder ends the stream; it also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior is not a guarantee that an encoder will run for 12 hours: YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Use RTMPS when supported
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Get the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and configure the encoder with that endpoint and your stream key. Google’s developer guidance specifies the rtmps scheme, a valid ingestion endpoint, port 443, and the hostname used for SNI authentication: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS and YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide.

Choose persistence based on what can fail

Choose tmux when you mainly need to leave an interactive encoder running after disconnecting from SSH. Choose a service manager when you also need a defined startup and restart policy. Configure and test service behavior on the actual server, including what happens after a reboot; no terminal multiplexer or process manager can ensure the network or YouTube remains available.
Troubleshoot a stream that stopped or cannot be reattached
- You lost SSH and cannot see the encoder. Reconnect to the same host and account, then run
tmux list-sessionsandtmux attach-session -t youtube-live. A dropped SSH connection does not necessarily mean the tmux session ended. - The named session is absent. Confirm the hostname and account. Check for host logout policies that terminate user processes. If the server rebooted or the session ended, tmux cannot recreate the lost encoder process.
- tmux is present, but YouTube shows no incoming media. Inspect the encoder terminal for an error and confirm the encoder is using the current Live Control Room stream URL and key. Check the incoming preview or status in Live Control Room rather than assuming the session is streaming.
- The encoder stopped after you detached. Detaching should leave it running, but it does not recover a crashed process. Inspect the session output after reattaching; if automatic restart is required, configure and validate a service manager.
- The session is running but your stream has ended. YouTube documents that stopping transmission from the encoder ends the stream. Check whether the encoder is still sending and whether its connection has failed.
