On an Ubuntu VPS, install FFmpeg with sudo apt update and sudo apt install ffmpeg, then use FFmpeg to pace and loop a video file while sending it to YouTube Live over RTMPS. You will need the VPS’s sustained upload capacity, a compatible video file, and the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. An Indian VPS is a hosting-location choice—not a guarantee of a particular route, speed, or suitability for continuous streaming.
Install FFmpeg on Ubuntu
Ubuntu’s package archive provides FFmpeg for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and 24.04 LTS, with package versions varying by release and architecture. Use the package manager rather than assuming one version applies to every VPS. Ubuntu Packages lists packages by release and architecture.
-
Connect to the VPS over SSH using an account with sudo privileges.
-
Refresh the package list:
sudo apt update -
Install FFmpeg:
sudo apt install ffmpeg -
Verify the installed build and version:
ffmpeg -version
Use the version reported on your server when checking whether a codec or option is available; package versions can differ between Ubuntu releases and architectures. See the Ubuntu package archive.

Get YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key
-
Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to reach Live Control Room. Create or open the stream you intend to use.
-
In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and the selected stream key. YouTube may show an RTMP URL by default; use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL.
-
Keep the key private. It is a credential: do not publish it in a public script, screenshot, or repository. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension of RTMP. If connection or SSL errors occur, check that the destination begins with rtmps. YouTube’s SSL guidance also recommends trying port 443 where that error applies. See YouTube’s encoder and RTMPS guidance.

-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "RTMPS_STREAM_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This is a starting example, not a tested command or a guarantee that a particular file, FFmpeg build, VPS, or YouTube account will work unchanged. It assumes 30 fps output, a 2-second GOP, H.264 video, and AAC audio. Replace /path/to/video.mp4 with the real file path. Replace the destination placeholder with the RTMPS URL and stream key in the format YouTube supplies; do not leave the placeholder text in the command.

FFmpeg’s input, output, stream-selection, and codec behavior is documented in the FFmpeg command-line documentation. A source file with unusual streams or codecs may need different mapping, encoding, or audio settings. Inspect it and adjust the command rather than assuming every MP4 has the same contents.
Choose settings for YouTube and the VPS
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommendations vary with resolution and frame rate. For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps; it recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a promise that a specific VPS can sustain the upload. Check current guidance at YouTube Help.
| Setting | Example above | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 via libx264 |
Use a codec YouTube lists and your installed FFmpeg build supports. |
| Video bitrate | 4,500 kbps | Set it for the intended resolution and frame rate, and below the VPS’s reliably sustainable outbound capacity. YouTube’s H.264 720p30 recommendation is 5 Mbps. |
| Rate control | Maximum rate and buffer are set in the command | YouTube recommends CBR. Confirm that the encoder behavior and selected options meet the intended output and platform guidance. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Match the planned stream and source where practical; YouTube lists rates up to 60 fps. |
| Keyframe interval | 60 frames, or 2 seconds at 30 fps | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. At a different frame rate, adjust the frame count to preserve the interval. |
| Audio | AAC, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Check the source and stream health for intelligible, continuous audio. |
Do not choose a VPS solely because its advertised location is in India. Compare the provider’s sustained outbound bandwidth, network route to YouTube ingest, CPU capacity if encoding, storage for the source file, supported operating system, and terms for continuous streaming. No provider performance or continuous-streaming policy is established here, so verify these directly before committing.
Test the stream before relying on it
-
Run the FFmpeg command with a representative video and audio track. YouTube advises testing with movement and audio similar to the planned stream.

Check FFmpeg’s terminal output for errors, but do not treat an open process as proof the broadcast is working.
-
Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream preview, stream health, and any warnings or messages. Confirm the expected picture and audio arrive before relying on the setup.

Keep the test running long enough to check sustained upload behavior, then review the host’s available bandwidth and CPU monitoring. A short successful connection does not establish long-term reliability.
Troubleshoot common failures
-
“ffmpeg: command not found.” The package may not be installed or the installation may have failed. Run
sudo apt update, install withsudo apt install ffmpeg, and verify usingffmpeg -version. -
FFmpeg cannot open the input. Check that the file exists at the exact path, that the VPS account can read it, and that the filename and quotes are correct. Use an absolute path to avoid a working-directory mismatch.

YouTube does not connect, or reports an SSL error. Verify the copied destination and stream key, confirm the destination uses RTMPS, and consult YouTube’s SSL guidance about port 443 if it applies. Do not expose the key while debugging.

The stream starts but has dropped frames or poor health. The selected bitrate may exceed the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity, or the network route may be unstable. Lower the bitrate or output resolution, then test again and monitor Live Control Room health.
-
Encoding is slow or the VPS is overloaded. Transcoding consumes CPU. Try a less demanding resolution or frame rate, or a faster x264 preset, then verify the actual output and stream health. A faster preset can trade compression efficiency for lower encoding load.

Video works but audio is absent or wrong. Check whether the input contains an audio stream and whether FFmpeg’s automatic stream selection chose the intended tracks. The source may need explicit stream mapping or audio conversion; consult the FFmpeg documentation.
-
The video does not repeat. Confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the input is consumed and that the command is reading the intended file. Review FFmpeg’s output for errors at the end of the first pass. What’s actually slowing this PC down?

YouTube shows warnings or the broadcast cannot be made public. Check the account’s Live Control Room messages and eligibility or stream settings. Use only material you have the rights to broadcast; a technical loop does not grant copyright permission or guarantee compliance with YouTube’s monetization and reused-content rules.
Copyright and ongoing channel rules
Looping a file is a delivery method, not a rights clearance. Use video and audio you created or are licensed to stream, and retain permission records where relevant. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions depend on the content and channel circumstances; repeating a file does not by itself establish eligibility or compliance. Review the warnings and messages shown for your stream in Live Control Room.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream without maintaining an FFmpeg process on your own VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The computer at home can be off; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube, not other platforms.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; it streams the file as made, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support.
- The first day is free with no card, once per account. Billing options are a day, a week, a month, 6 months, or a year; cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. Contact support for 5 or more slots.
Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. For a different billing period, the listed options are: Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · Monthly $9.99 per month · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year.
For an ongoing prerecorded YouTube loop, this removes the need to keep a VPS or home computer running, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and recovers automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Start a StreamNeo free day.
