You can use AWS Elemental MediaLive to process a prerecorded video and send it to a scheduled YouTube Live event, but it is not simply a matter of uploading the file to Amazon S3. YouTube needs a live feed from an encoder; MediaLive documents MP4 as a video-on-demand input and RTMP/RTMPS as supported output types. That makes AWS a plausible building block, not a verified, ready-made recipe for every account or workflow. Test the exact configuration before relying on it.
How the AWS-to-YouTube setup works
YouTube Studio creates the event and provides the stream URL and key. An encoder plays or processes your recording as a continuous feed, then sends that feed to YouTube. AWS can perform the media-processing and delivery role; YouTube remains the place where you schedule the event and viewers watch it.
- Schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and schedule a stream. This creates an upcoming event and watch page, where available, and lets viewers set reminders. See YouTube’s scheduling and streaming instructions.
- Provide the recording to an encoder. MediaLive documentation identifies MP4 as a VOD input. Configure the workflow to play or process that file as the live feed; confirm the playback and scheduling behavior for your specific setup in the MediaLive input documentation.
- Configure the destination and output. MediaLive supports RTMP and RTMPS output types. Its RTMP output documentation lists H.264 video and AAC audio. Configure the output to match YouTube’s current ingest details and the event’s supplied server URL and stream key. Consult the MediaLive output documentation, MediaLive codec settings, and YouTube encoder setup guide.
- Test before the real broadcast. Start the feed, check the Live Control Room preview, verify the event can be accessed as intended, and only then start the scheduled stream. Keep monitoring audio, picture, and delivery during the event.
The documentation establishes compatible building blocks, but not a complete, production-tested MediaLive-to-YouTube configuration with universal playback scheduling and endpoint settings. Confirm those details for your account and workflow, and run a private or unlisted test event first.
Why uploading the video to S3 is not enough
Amazon S3 stores files; uploading a recording there does not create a YouTube livestream. AWS describes MediaLive MP4 input as VOD and does not recommend S3 as a source for a live stream. Likewise, a MediaLive HLS output to S3 is a different distribution pattern, not a YouTube Live ingest workflow. The destination and protocol must be deliberately configured for YouTube. See AWS’s file-input guidance and MediaLive output documentation.

Requirements, stream credentials, and monitoring
Check channel eligibility
YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance requires channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. It also sets a minimum age and requires compliance with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check YouTube’s current eligibility requirements for the account you will use.
Protect the stream key
Enter the Live Control Room server URL and stream key in the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. Regenerate it if it is exposed, and avoid putting it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. YouTube’s stream settings instructions explain where these credentials are managed.

Preview and watch the whole path
YouTube advises setting up the encoder in advance, checking the preview before going live, and verifying that the event is accessible. Its streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the bitrate needed for the primary and backup streams. That recommendation concerns an upload link; with an AWS-originated feed, monitor the relevant AWS-to-YouTube delivery path and any other network legs in your design rather than assuming your home connection is the limiting factor. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and streaming tips.
Rights and YouTube rules still apply to prerecorded video
A recording does not become exempt from copyright or platform rules because it is being broadcast as a livestream. You need the rights required for the content’s use, including music rights. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that You have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” The provider is also responsible for applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Read the YouTube livestream terms and check the rights for every part of the recording.

| Option | What it does | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube livestream from the cloud. | No home computer needs to stay on; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one price per slot. It is designed for uploaded videos, not a camera feed. |
| YouTube Studio plus a compatible software encoder | Schedules the event in YouTube and sends a prerecorded feed from a computer running encoder software. | Consider the need to keep the computer running, local bandwidth, automation, and monitoring. |
| AWS Elemental MediaLive | Cloud media processing with documented MP4 VOD input and RTMP/RTMPS output types. | Consider AWS setup effort, protocol compatibility, playback and scheduling behavior, resilience, monitoring, and region-specific cost. |
| AJA HELO Plus | A hardware encoder listed by YouTube; its PlayToStream feature is described as supporting scheduled prerecorded media streamed directly to YouTube Live. | Consider device cost, standalone operation, storage and network needs, and fit with your event workflow. It is an optional hardware alternative, not a requirement for AWS. |
| Gyre | A cloud-based prerecorded YouTube streaming option listed by YouTube. | Check current features, scheduling and control, rights responsibilities, reliability, and vendor pricing before choosing. |
For a modest one-off broadcast, an encoder you already know how to operate may take less setup than building an AWS workflow. For a cloud-based, continuously looping prerecorded channel, a dedicated service may remove the need to manage media-processing infrastructure. The best fit depends on how much control and operational work you want.

Common problems and what to check
YouTube does not show an incoming signal
- Confirm the event’s server URL and stream key were copied into the encoder correctly and correspond to the scheduled event.
- Check that the MediaLive output protocol and destination settings match YouTube’s current ingest details.
- Verify that the channel is eligible to livestream and that the event is the one you expect.
- Check the encoder and AWS output state, then look for delivery or network errors along the AWS-to-YouTube path.
The event preview has picture but no sound, or the reverse
- Check that the output includes the expected video and audio tracks and that the codecs match the configured output. MediaLive’s RTMP output guidance lists H.264 video and AAC audio.
- Confirm the source file itself contains the audio or video you expect, then inspect the preview before starting the event.
The stream starts but stops, or the recording ends too soon
- Check whether the playback workflow is configured to continue or loop the file; a VOD input alone does not establish that it will repeat automatically.
- Review MediaLive resource state, output status, and AWS monitoring for interruptions; verify whether your design has the recovery behavior you require.
- Test the full intended duration. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end; do not assume longer broadcasts will be archived in the same way. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Viewers cannot open the event
- Check the event’s privacy and access settings in YouTube Studio, then open its watch page as a viewer would.
- Confirm the event is scheduled and that you start the broadcast from the intended Live Control Room workflow after the feed is ready.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on prerecorded YouTube channel rather than building and operating an AWS media workflow, StreamNeo takes three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, it automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use AWS MediaLive to stream a video file to YouTube?
MediaLive documents MP4 as a VOD input and RTMP/RTMPS output types, making it a plausible approach. Confirm the specific playback, endpoint, and scheduling configuration for your account, then test it before a production event.
Will uploading a video to S3 create a YouTube livestream?
No. S3 stores the file. You still need an encoder workflow that sends a live feed to the scheduled YouTube event.
