You can loop a folder of videos into a YouTube Live feed from a remote server with FFmpeg: make an ordered concat playlist, check that its files are compatible, then send the encoder output to the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio. A folder is not automatically a valid playlist, and mixed formats may need re-encoding. You also need to plan for session limits, process failures, and network interruptions before treating the stream as unattended.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube lists both as requirements for live streaming: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  • An always-on remote server with the video files, FFmpeg installed, and enough stable outbound bandwidth for the chosen bitrate.
  • A stream URL and stream key created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password; it authorizes the encoder feed. See YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder and YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings.
  • A clear file order and a decision about whether to preserve the existing encodings or normalize the videos into one consistent output format.

The exact FFmpeg command depends on your server, FFmpeg build, and the streams, codecs, timestamps, and durations in the files. The example below is a template, not a command verified against an unspecified folder.

Set up the YouTube encoder stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create and then Go live to reach Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream and select its privacy and start/stop behavior for your use case.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Studio. Use the current values displayed there rather than assuming a particular endpoint or reusing a key from an unrelated setup.
  3. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted extension of RTMP. The current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the current codec, resolution, frame-rate, and bitrate recommendations.
  4. Choose output settings your server can sustain. For H.264, YouTube’s current table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; the listed minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. For 720p30, it lists 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your host’s upload path can sustain them.
  5. Keep actual available upload bandwidth above the stream bitrate; YouTube recommends roughly 20% headroom. Measure or validate the remote server’s network path, not a desktop connection elsewhere. See YouTube’s streaming tips. For a basic SDR stream, use the applicable SDR guidance, including Rec. 709 and 8-bit; do not apply HDR-specific requirements unless you are intentionally configuring an HDR workflow.

Prepare an ordered playlist from the folder

Choose the order explicitly

Do not depend on filesystem enumeration order. Select the videos and write their paths in the exact sequence viewers should see them. The FFmpeg concat demuxer reads entries sequentially and adjusts timestamps, but accurate durations matter; inaccurate duration data can cause artifacts. The official documentation is at FFmpeg formats: concat demuxer.

Create the concat list

Create a text file such as playlist.txt, with one entry per file using the concat format. For example:

file '/srv/videos/01-intro.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/02-main.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/03-outro.mp4'

Use paths that the FFmpeg process can read, and ensure each file exists and is accessible to the account running the encoder. The concat demuxer applies safety rules to paths by default; consult its documentation before changing safe-path behavior, particularly if the playlist contains absolute paths or unusual filenames.

Check compatibility before choosing stream copy

For concat demuxing with stream copy, the files need matching stream layouts, including codecs and time bases. A folder containing different resolutions, frame rates, codec profiles, audio layouts, or missing audio tracks may fail, produce glitches, or require a normalized output. Inspect representative files and test the transitions. If they are not compatible, re-encode or normalize them to a consistent resolution, frame rate, video codec, pixel format, and audio layout rather than assuming one copy command will work.

FFmpeg’s input looping option is documented at FFmpeg documentation: command-line options. Put the input loop option before the playlist input. A stream-copy starting pattern, when all playlist entries are compatible, is:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/videos/playlist.txt
  -c copy -f flv "rtmps://CURRENT-URL/STREAM-KEY"

Replace the output string with the RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, in the format required by that endpoint. This is only a structural example: it does not establish that every FFmpeg build accepts the same URL arrangement or that arbitrary files can be copied as-is. Protect the key: avoid putting it in public scripts, repositories, or logs, and restrict permissions on files that contain it. If a key is exposed, reset it in Studio.

When re-encoding, set a single output profile that matches YouTube’s current recommendations and your source material. For example, ensure the chosen video encoder produces a supported codec, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; select a compatible audio codec and bitrate from YouTube’s current table. Do not force a higher resolution or frame rate than the source can usefully provide. The precise encoder options vary with FFmpeg build and codec, so validate the generated output with a short test rather than treating a universal command as established.

Start, test, and monitor the stream

  1. Run the FFmpeg process under a service manager or other process supervisor so you can see whether it exits and arrange a restart policy. Ensure the playlist and media remain available for the full run.
  2. Start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance and checking the preview before going live; see YouTube’s encoder how-to.
  3. Run a short unlisted test with representative video and audio. Check that the preview appears, sound is present, transitions between files are clean, and stream health shows no persistent bitrate or connection problem. Check the watch page as a viewer would.
  4. Confirm that the public or unlisted setting and auto-start/auto-stop behavior are what you intend before relying on an unattended run. These settings are available in Live Control Room; see YouTube’s live stream settings.
  5. Monitor the FFmpeg process, server disk space, file availability, encoder errors, and network connection. YouTube advises testing encoder failover and continuously monitoring audio/video quality in its streaming tips. A restart policy helps with process exits, but it does not by itself verify that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.

Plan for long sessions and recovery

YouTube’s encoder how-to says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single encoder session can remain open indefinitely or that a session longer than 12 hours will be archived. For a continuous channel, decide how you will rotate or restart sessions, test that policy in your channel, and check current behavior in Live Control Room.

Also decide what happens after an interruption. A remote process can stop because of a server reboot, missing or full storage, a network failure, a bad media file, or an encoder error. YouTube recommends testing failover; the sources do not promise that a particular server setup or FFmpeg command will recover automatically. Test your restart and reconnect behavior before leaving it unattended, and confirm the stream returns in Live Control Room.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube never shows an incoming preview Incorrect URL/key, channel not eligible, encoder not running, or connection blocked or failing. Confirm channel verification and restriction status, copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, inspect FFmpeg errors, and test outbound connectivity from the server.
Concat input fails or stops on a file Bad path, unreadable media, unsupported playlist entry, or incompatible stream layout. Check each path and file permissions, test each file individually, and compare video/audio streams and time bases. Normalize or re-encode incompatible files.
Glitches or audio gaps at transitions Inaccurate durations, differing timestamps, stream layouts, frame rates, or audio tracks. Test each boundary in the playlist, use files with compatible streams for copy mode, or create a consistent re-encoded output.
Buffering, dropped frames, or unstable stream health Insufficient or variable server upload capacity, an overly high bitrate, or network instability. Validate the remote host’s sustained upload, reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed, and retain YouTube’s recommended network headroom.
Stream stops and does not resume FFmpeg exited, server restarted, storage filled, network dropped, or YouTube ended/rejected the feed. Inspect process and system logs without exposing the stream key, verify media and free disk space, then test a supervised restart and reconnection in Live Control Room.
Stream is public or starts/stops unexpectedly Privacy or auto-start/auto-stop settings differ from the intended operation. Review the stream’s Live Control Room settings before the next run.

Choose between FFmpeg and a cloud-managed option

FFmpeg is suitable when you already control an always-on server, can manage its media and network, and are prepared to test playlist compatibility and recovery. A graphical encoder may be easier to configure interactively, but it still needs a running machine and a reliable path to YouTube. The important trade-offs are stream copy versus normalizing mixed media, output quality versus stable upload capacity, and one server versus a tested backup and restart arrangement. The sources here do not establish a best hosting vendor or a universally reliable command for an unspecified media folder.
