Use YouTube Studio’s encoder workflow: confirm your channel can livestream, create or schedule an event, copy its server URL and stream key into an encoder on the spare PC, then test the audio and preview before going live. The PC must stay on and connected for this do-it-yourself setup. Most importantly, clear the rights to the songs and recordings first; devotional subject matter does not automatically make music safe to broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled.
- A spare PC that can run an encoder and remain powered on with a stable internet connection for the whole broadcast.
- An encoder that supports YouTube’s selected ingestion protocol.
- Your YouTube server URL and stream key, treated as private credentials.
- A tested audio source: computer or application audio for prepared tracks, or a microphone or other audio equipment for live vocals and instruments.
- Permission for the compositions, arrangements, recordings, performances, and intended uses you plan to stream.
1. Check that your channel can livestream
Open YouTube Studio and confirm that the channel is verified and its livestream feature is available. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says channels must have had no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days, and livestreamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
2. Create the event and get its connection details
- In YouTube Studio, create a livestream or schedule one for the intended date and time. Choose the visibility and event settings that fit your audience.
- Follow YouTube’s encoder setup workflow to find the server URL and stream key for the event. The exact screen labels can vary as Studio changes; use the encoder setup instructions at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and key into the encoder’s YouTube connection fields. Never put the key in a public description, message, or overlay: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
3. Route the right audio from the spare PC
For prepared devotional tracks
Set the encoder’s audio input to the computer or application output that plays the tracks. Play a representative section and verify that the encoder’s audio meter moves and the YouTube preview actually contains sound. Check song transitions, silence between tracks, and any spoken introductions. Disable or silence desktop notifications and unrelated system sounds so they do not reach the broadcast.
For live singing or instruments
Connect and test the microphone, mixer, or other audio equipment you intend to use. A microphone is relevant to a live performance, not a requirement for routing prepared computer audio. Check that the encoder is receiving the intended input rather than the laptop’s built-in microphone or another unintended device; monitor levels to catch distortion, clipping, or silence before the event begins.

4. Choose encoder settings the PC and connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Video bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the target output you choose.

A spare PC’s capacity cannot be inferred from the fact that it is a PC. Processor, graphics hardware, operating system, encoder version, and cooling all affect performance. If the preview stutters, the encoder reports overload, or the computer becomes unstable, lower the resolution or frame rate and test again. Do not choose a preset solely because the PC can display video at that resolution.

5. Test the full stream and monitor it live
- Check upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends that total stream bitrate stay within available upload bandwidth and advises leaving 20% upload headroom. Its network and preparation guidance is at Streaming tips.
- Set up the encoder well ahead of the event and test using representative sound and movement. Include the actual playback source, expected spoken parts, transitions, and any silence.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before starting or announcing the event. Confirm both picture and sound, then inspect stream health.
- During the broadcast, keep an eye on stream health and the PC’s power, temperature, and network connection. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover encoder preparation, hardware checks, and preview guidance.
Clear music rights before broadcasting
Religious, devotional, traditional, or freely available music is not automatically cleared for a livestream. Check the rights to both the underlying composition and the specific recording or performance, including the arrangement where relevant, and confirm that permissions cover the intended territory and any replay or archive. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have rights needed for the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can cause the stream to be replaced with a placeholder and a warning; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A licence by itself may not prevent a live interruption: YouTube says a channel may need to be added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. Archived streams may also receive Content ID claims after the event. Check Copyright issues with live streams and confirm any needed allowlisting directly with the rights holder.

- For music you own or commissioned, keep documentation covering the composition, recording, performers, and streaming permissions, and check whether rights-management or allowlisting steps are needed.
- For third-party recordings, obtain permission for the live broadcast and any archived replay in the relevant territory, then confirm Content ID arrangements with the rights holder.
- Do not assume a song is public domain or that a recording is cleared based only on its age, devotional use, or availability online. The status of a particular song depends on its actual rights and permissions.
Troubleshooting common problems
