YouTube’s published chapter workflow applies to the saved video: add timestamp-and-title lines to its description in YouTube Studio after the stream has become a replay. During the live broadcast, help viewers follow along with an on-screen segment title, a spoken transition, and—if useful—a timestamped agenda in the description or chat. These live cues are navigation aids, not the same thing as YouTube’s video chapter bar.
What viewers can use during the live broadcast
Plan a simple live index for the podcast episode. At each major topic change, display the current segment in an overlay or lower-third and say the transition aloud. If your production allows it, keep a compact episode agenda in the stream description or chat as well.
| Live cue | What it helps with | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| On-screen segment title | Names the current topic while viewers watch the player. | It must be updated as the conversation changes; a long title may be difficult to read on a phone or TV. |
| Spoken transition | Signals a topic change without requiring viewers to read text. | It depends on viewers hearing the audio and does not provide a visual index. |
| Timestamped description or chat index | Provides written pointers to episode topics. | Treat these as text aids or pointers, not guaranteed markers on the player’s chapter bar. |
For a live audience that needs both visual and text navigation, combine cues. Assign a producer or moderator to note the actual transition times rather than relying on the planned rundown if the conversation runs long.
Prepare timestamps that will match the eventual replay
- Build an episode rundown. List topics in their planned order and prepare concise segment labels for the overlay.
- Record actual transition times. Note the time each topic begins during the stream. Use actual transitions, not planned durations.
- Track the saved video’s clock. If the channel runs continuously or several episodes share one uninterrupted broadcast, record each episode boundary and its offset from the start of the full video. Do not assume the chapter clock starts over at the podcast episode’s beginning.
- Account for everything before the episode. A waiting screen, gap, or intro affects the replay’s timeline. Use the final saved video to confirm offsets.
This clock-matching step matters because YouTube chapter entries identify positions in a video. A timestamp relative to an episode’s local start will point to the wrong place if the replay includes earlier material.

Add chapters to the completed broadcast
YouTube Help describes video chapters as sections of a video with individual previews. Its documented manual workflow is to edit the video description in YouTube Studio and add timestamp-and-title lines. YouTube Help: Video chapters.
- Wait for the replay. After a live stream ends, YouTube converts the completed broadcast to a video. It may not appear immediately; availability delay can depend on the broadcast’s length. YouTube LiveBroadcasts API documentation.
- Open the saved video in YouTube Studio. Edit its description and add one timestamp and chapter title per line.
- Use the final replay’s actual offsets. Include the full video timeline, including any pre-show, waiting screen, gap, intro, or earlier episode in an uninterrupted feed.
- Check the chapter rules. The first timestamp must be
00:00; include at least three timestamps in ascending order; and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. - Save and verify. Check the replay and its chapter bar after saving. If a chapter does not appear as expected, recheck the ordering, first timestamp, spacing, and offsets.

Chapters, live cues, and Google Search key moments are different
- Video chapters are timestamp-and-title entries in a video’s description that YouTube can render as navigable sections.
- Live visual cues—such as an overlay or lower-third—identify the current segment during the broadcast. They are not the video chapter bar.
- Description or chat timestamps are written pointers. Google says YouTube description timestamps and labels can help it identify key moments, but this is separate from live chapter navigation. See Google Search Central: Video structured data.
- Google Search key moments are a search presentation, not a promise of chapter controls in a live player.
Automatic chapters and common mistakes
Manual chapters override automatic chapters. Automatic chapters are not available on every video; YouTube says they may be unavailable when a channel has an active strike or the content may be inappropriate for some viewers. Do not rely on automatic chapters to fill gaps in a manual list. YouTube Help: Video chapters.
- The replay chapter points to the wrong segment: Recalculate from the start of the full saved video, not from the podcast episode’s local start.
- The chapter list fails to meet YouTube’s format rules: Check that it begins at
00:00, has at least three entries in ascending order, and that each section lasts at least 10 seconds. - The replay is not available yet: Allow time for YouTube’s post-stream conversion; the API documentation notes that availability is not necessarily immediate.
- Viewers cannot tell what is happening live: Use a segment title and spoken cue during the broadcast instead of expecting replay chapters to serve as live controls.
- Expected automatic chapters are missing: Add and verify manual chapters where appropriate; automatic chapters are not guaranteed for every video.
