What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. YouTube Live accepts streams at up to 60 frames per second (fps). To send 60 fps, your video source and encoder must output it, and you need enough stable upload bandwidth for your chosen resolution and codec. YouTube then transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers, so their playback quality may differ from your encoder settings. YouTube’s live encoder settings list the current requirements and recommendations.
What 60 fps support means
Sixty fps is YouTube’s maximum frame rate in its general live encoder settings. The platform detects the incoming encoder settings by default; a 60 fps label in your software does not by itself guarantee that the source is producing 60 distinct frames per second or that every viewer will receive 60 fps.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats to suit viewers’ devices and network conditions. The encoder bitrate is therefore an ingest setting, not a promise of identical resolution or frame rate on every playback device.
YouTube’s recommended bitrate for 60 fps
YouTube publishes minimum and recommended ingest bitrates by resolution and codec. Values below are in megabits per second (Mbps); choose the row for your output resolution and the column matching your encoder’s video codec. The recommended value is the target where your connection can sustain it. The minimum is not the same as the recommendation and leaves less room for difficult or fast-moving footage.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Resolution at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 minimum | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are the minimum and recommended encoder bitrates in YouTube’s published live settings; check the current official table before an important stream because platform specifications can change. The figures describe the video stream sent to YouTube, not a universal internet speed requirement. Your available upload capacity must also accommodate audio, other network use and normal bandwidth variation.
Encoder settings that matter
YouTube’s general live guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a keyframe interval of two seconds; it says not to exceed four seconds. Set the encoder’s frame rate to 60 fps and confirm that the source itself can supply that rate.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Resolution and manual selection
YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default. If you need to select resolution manually, YouTube says to use a custom stream key and enable manual resolution settings. Follow the current instructions in Live encoder settings for the applicable controls.
Color and HDR
For standard dynamic range, YouTube lists Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth among its advanced settings. HDR has additional codec and ingestion requirements; ordinary 60 fps support does not mean every HDR configuration is supported. Check the HDR-specific instructions in YouTube’s encoder guidance if you plan to stream HDR.

Set up and test a 60 fps stream
- Choose a resolution and codec. Decide whether to stream at 720p, 1080p, 1440p or 2160p, then check the corresponding minimum and recommended bitrate above for H.264, H.265 or AV1.
- Configure the encoder. Select 60 fps, constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS if available. Set a bitrate appropriate to your resolution and codec; do not treat YouTube’s minimum as the recommended target.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Use the stream key and server information shown in YouTube’s live setup. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Check upload capacity. Run a speed test and make sure the available upload bandwidth can support the total stream bitrate with room for variation. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% headroom; other devices and users on a shared network can reduce what is available to the encoder.
- Run a representative test stream. Include movement and audio similar to the real event, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages before going live to your audience.
- Monitor the live feed. Watch the encoder and YouTube stream-health indicators for dropped frames, bitrate instability or other warnings. If the connection struggles, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again rather than relying on a setting your upload cannot sustain.
YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for gameplay, screen sharing, external audio/video equipment and more advanced productions. An encoder may be software or standalone hardware; YouTube’s guidance does not require a particular product, webcam, camera or capture card. For setup details, see YouTube’s encoder streaming help and encoder settings.
Troubleshoot common 60 fps problems
- The stream is not actually 60 fps: Check the source frame rate as well as the encoder output. YouTube can only receive the frames the source and encoder send.
- Dropped frames or an unstable stream: Compare the stream bitrate with available upload capacity, account for shared-network use and leave headroom. Reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- Playback looks softer or slower for some viewers: YouTube transcodes the stream for different devices and network conditions. The encoder’s input settings do not guarantee that every viewer sees the same rendition.
- Manual resolution controls are unavailable: YouTube says manual resolution selection uses a custom stream key with manual resolution settings enabled. Otherwise, resolution and frame rate are detected automatically.
- HDR settings do not match a standard setup: HDR has extra codec and ingestion requirements. Check YouTube’s HDR-specific encoder instructions instead of assuming general 60 fps settings cover the workflow.
