Confirm frames are arriving and encoding is keeping pace before changing YouTube settings. The right fix depends on your Pi model, operating system, input, FFmpeg build, available memory, and the exact symptom; there is no reliable universal command for all of them.
Start by identifying where the stream breaks
“Limited RAM” can mean the Pi has little memory installed, memory pressure is visible, the system is swapping, or an out-of-memory (OOM) event has occurred. Those are different problems. Record the exact model and symptom before changing settings.
Collect the details that make the error diagnosable
- Raspberry Pi model and operating-system release.
- Input type and capture method: camera, file, or another source.
- FFmpeg version and build configuration, from
ffmpeg -version. - The command you ran, with the YouTube stream key removed.
- The first relevant FFmpeg errors and whether its frame and FPS counters advance.
- Available memory and any observed memory pressure, swap activity, or OOM event.
Save the original command and logs. Change one variable at a time so you can tell which change affects the result.
Check capture without YouTube in the path
First establish that the input itself works. If you use a camera, test it with the camera stack and tooling appropriate to your operating system rather than assuming that instructions for one stack apply to another. The Raspberry Pi Picamera2 manual describes Picamera2 0.3.37 and targets Raspberry Pi OS or Raspberry Pi OS Lite on Bullseye or later; it recommends updating the OS. Those details do not establish that Picamera2 is the right method for every camera setup. See the Picamera2 manual.

For a file or other input, check that it opens and produces the expected streams before adding YouTube output. If capture fails or frames do not arrive locally, fix that stage first; ingest settings cannot repair a missing input.
Reduce local workload to test for resource pressure
Temporarily simplify the workload and observe whether frame delivery, encoding speed, and memory pressure change. These are diagnostic experiments, not proof that RAM is the cause.

- Lower the input or output resolution and frame rate.
- Remove optional filters and avoid scaling or format conversion when the source already has a suitable format.
- Turn off a GUI preview if you do not need it. Raspberry Pi’s Picamera2 manual warns that displaying camera images through the GUI can perform poorly on lower-powered devices such as Pi Zero; it recommends not displaying images or displaying them without the GUI.
Lower resolution and frame rate can reduce processing and bandwidth demands, but the improvement depends on the input and encoder. If these changes help, restore settings individually to identify the limiting operation. Do not treat adding swap or buying hardware as a default fix before confirming what is failing.
Inspect FFmpeg’s inputs, mapping, and output options
Read the command in order. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output and reset between files. If automatic stream selection might choose the wrong audio or video stream, use -map to select the intended streams explicitly. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for option scope and stream mapping.

- Check that each input index refers to the intended input and that the input opens.
- Confirm that output options appear before the output they configure, rather than being placed where they apply to a different input or output.
- Check the selected video and audio streams, codec, pixel format if applicable, output muxer, and destination.
- Remove or correct options that the installed build does not recognize.
Do not assume a hardware encoder or private encoder option is available just because an online example uses it. Builds differ. Check ffmpeg -version, then inspect local encoder help with ffmpeg -h encoder=<name>, substituting the encoder name you intend to use. FFmpeg’s codec documentation also points readers to command-line encoder help for encoder-specific options.
Compare the output with YouTube’s ingest requirements
Once the input and local encoding are progressing, check whether the outgoing stream matches YouTube’s current guidance for its codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and keyframes recommended every 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds apart. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Requirements and recommended bitrate depend on the chosen codec and output mode, so use the relevant row in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

For H.264, YouTube recommends 3 Mbps at 720p30 and 5 Mbps at 1080p30; its recommendations for other frame rates and resolutions differ. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee of Raspberry Pi encoding performance. Check that your uplink can sustain the bitrate you choose, with room for fluctuations. YouTube advises testing with representative movement and audio, and selecting a quality the connection can reliably carry.

Test privately, unlisted, or in a test event before relying on a public stream. Include representative movement and audio, then compare three signals: whether FFmpeg’s frame/FPS output continues, whether local resources remain under pressure, and what YouTube reports for stream health. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during a live event. If FFmpeg continues producing output but YouTube reports an ingest or connection issue, focus on output compatibility and the uplink; if frames stop or encoding falls behind first, investigate capture or local processing.

Troubleshoot by symptom
