You can use VLC to repeat a video as the source for a YouTube Live broadcast, but the complete VLC-to-YouTube setup depends on whether your current VLC version can send a compatible encoder feed. YouTube’s general workflow is to create a live stream in YouTube Studio, enter its server URL and stream key in a compatible encoder, then test the preview and stream health before going public. The YouTube instructions cited here are not India-specific; no separate India-only encoder setup is established.
Before you start: confirm your channel can go live
Live streaming is an account requirement, not a VLC setting. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its general eligibility guidance also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility requirements before configuring software; requirements can change.
Prepare VLC to repeat the video
VLC can play media repeatedly, but “repeat” and “loop” can refer to different behavior: one mode may repeat the current item, while another cycles through a playlist. For a single-video broadcast, the desired behavior is to keep playing that same file rather than advance to another item. VideoLAN project discussion supports repeat or loop behavior for playback, including a one-item playlist, but it is not a current, cross-platform guide to VLC’s desktop controls. Exact menu labels and the transition behavior in your VLC release are not verified here.
Before relying on playback for a long broadcast, test the file locally and check that its picture and audio continue as expected when it reaches the end. Do not assume that selecting a playlist loop is identical to repeating the current item in every VLC version.

Create the YouTube Live destination
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room to create or open a live stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions; interface labels may vary as Studio changes.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. The URL identifies YouTube’s ingest destination; the key identifies which stream YouTube should accept.
- Keep the key secret. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, share it, or leave it visible in a screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
- Enter both values in a compatible encoder in its corresponding server and stream-key fields. YouTube documents this encoder-side workflow, but the sources cited here do not verify VLC’s current output interface, the protocol it can send in your configuration, or whether it accepts the required values in the expected way.
Can VLC itself send the repeating video to YouTube?
The important limitation is encoder compatibility. YouTube’s instructions explain how an encoder connects using a server URL and stream key, and VideoLAN material describes playback looping; neither source confirms a complete, current VLC-to-YouTube configuration. The exact VLC version, operating system, output menu, protocol support, and settings are not established here, so it would be misleading to provide menu clicks or claim that a particular VLC setup works.
Only proceed with VLC as both player and encoder after confirming that your installed release can output a compatible live feed to YouTube’s current ingest destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported; its documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Do not assume that a particular VLC build supports RTMPS merely because YouTube recommends it. Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain
Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate together, using YouTube’s current recommendation table for that specific combination. Its bitrate guidance varies by resolution, frame rate and codec, so there is no single safe bitrate to apply to every video. The practical limit is also your sustained upload capacity: test the connection under the conditions in which you plan to broadcast, and leave headroom rather than setting a bitrate at the edge of what the connection can carry.
YouTube recommends testing the upload connection and checking the Live Control Room preview and stream health. For details, consult its recommended encoder settings rather than copying an isolated bitrate figure without its format conditions.

Test before making the stream public
- Choose a private or unlisted test where appropriate, then start the encoder feed.
- Wait for the stream to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check that video is visible and audio is present and intelligible.
- Watch the stream health indicators and allow the video to reach its repeat point. Confirm that playback resumes in the way you intend and that audio does not drop or become misaligned.
- If the feed is unstable, lower the quality to a YouTube-recommended setting your connection can sustain, then test again.
- Make the broadcast public only after the preview and health checks are satisfactory. YouTube’s instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See its testing and monitoring guidance.
Copyright applies to repeated broadcasts too
Looping a file does not grant permission to broadcast its video or audio. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content; if it identifies material, the stream may be replaced, interrupted or terminated. Even if you have a licence, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel for the stream to avoid interruption. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams, and use material you have the right to broadcast.
