To add background music to an FFmpeg loop stream, feed FFmpeg both the looping video and the music, then either map the music as the only audio or mix it with the video’s existing audio using amix. The exact command depends on whether the video has audio, whether you want to repeat whole files or selected sections, and which YouTube ingest protocol your stream key uses.
Choose what should happen to the video’s original audio
First decide whether the music replaces the video’s sound or sits underneath it. The video loop and music loop are separate jobs: FFmpeg can repeat an input file with -stream_loop, or repeat decoded video frames and audio samples with the loop and aloop filters. See the FFmpeg filter documentation and FFmpeg command-line documentation.
- Music only: map the music stream as output audio. This is suitable when the video is silent or its sound should be discarded.
- Music plus original audio: use
amixto combine the video and music audio streams. Set the mix weights and duration behavior deliberately, then listen and check levels.
The examples below assume the video is input 0, the music is input 1, and the destination uses an RTMP-style FLV output. They illustrate FFmpeg syntax; they have not been executed or validated. Check your local FFmpeg build, input streams, YouTube stream-key protocol, and current YouTube settings before using them. Never expose a real stream key in a published command, screenshot, or log.
Loop the whole video and replace its audio with music
If the video’s original audio is not needed, repeat both complete input files and map the video from input 0 and music from input 1. The command-line option -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely; place it before the input it applies to.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i loop.mp4 -stream_loop -1 -re -i music.mp3
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmp://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"
Replace the destination with the server URL and stream key supplied for your chosen YouTube ingest protocol. This example uses an RTMP-style destination; YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure RTMP ingestion. Confirm the stream-key settings and protocol match the output you send.
Mix background music with the video’s audio
If the video contains sound you want to keep, connect both audio streams to amix in a complex filtergraph and map its labeled output. This example gives the music a weight of one-quarter relative to the video’s audio:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i loop.mp4 -stream_loop -1 -re -i music.mp3
-filter_complex "[0:a][1:a]amix=inputs=2:duration=first:weights='1 0.25':normalize=1[aout]"
-map 0:v:0 -map "[aout]"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmp://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"
The one-quarter weight is an example, not a universal mixing recommendation. Adjust the balance by listening to the output. FFmpeg’s amix filter normalizes by default; disabling normalization can cause heavy clipping if levels are not managed. Its duration option also matters: duration=first follows the first audio input’s duration. See the amix filter documentation.
This graph assumes input 0 has an audio stream. If it does not, the graph will fail because [0:a] is absent. Use the music-only mapping method instead, or revise the graph to use only audio streams that actually exist. FFmpeg’s stream-mapping documentation explains explicit mapping and complex filtergraphs.

Repeat a selected section of music instead of the whole file
For a whole music file, repeating the input with -stream_loop -1 is the simpler approach. To repeat decoded audio samples, use the aloop filter; its size option determines the maximum number of samples in the loop, so choose a meaningful value for the intended section and consult the filter help available in your FFmpeg build.
[1:a]aloop=loop=-1:size=YOUR_SAMPLE_COUNT,volume=YOUR_LEVEL[music]
This is a graph fragment, not a complete command. Replace the sample count and volume with appropriate values, then map [music] in the full output graph. A loop point can produce an audible seam if the source audio was not prepared to repeat cleanly; listen through the transition before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. For video, the loop filter is an alternative when repetition belongs inside a video filtergraph or only a frame segment should repeat; its start and frame count affect the result.

Match the output to YouTube’s ingest settings
Encoding settings depend on the selected protocol, resolution, frame rate, and stream format. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. For RTMP/RTMPS it calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and supports up to 60 fps. Its advanced stereo settings specify 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are platform recommendations and settings, not universal values for every protocol or output format.
The sample commands use H.264, AAC, and 128 kbps audio as a starting configuration, not a complete resolution-specific bitrate recipe. Check YouTube’s current guidance for a video bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate, and verify that your output matches the ingest protocol configured for the stream key. If using HLS rather than RTMP/RTMPS, follow YouTube’s protocol-specific guidance; HLS uses segment settings and has higher latency.

Check music rights before going live
A file that FFmpeg can play is not automatically safe to broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies such content, it may show a placeholder image and warning; if the content remains, the live stream can be temporarily interrupted or terminated. YouTube also warns: “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the third-party content.” See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Confirm with the rights owner that the license covers YouTube live streaming, any archived copy, and the territories where viewers may access it. Ask whether your channel must be added to a Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s live-stream terms state that providers must have necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants.
Test the stream and diagnose common failures
YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative audio and video, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Use the encoder settings guidance and stream-health recommendations while checking the output.
- FFmpeg reports that an audio stream is missing: the input may not contain the stream referenced by the graph. Inspect the input’s stream layout and remove the missing input from the graph; for a silent video, map the music stream alone.
- The video works but music is absent: check that the music file opens, that its audio stream is mapped or connected to the graph, and that the output audio codec is accepted by the selected ingest protocol.
- The mix sounds distorted: reduce levels and listen again. Check the weights and normalization settings; disabling
amixnormalization without managing levels can cause clipping. - The music stops or the stream ends unexpectedly: check that the intended input is actually being looped and that the filter’s duration behavior matches the audio streams. Whole-file input looping and sample looping are different methods.
- YouTube interrupts or warns about the stream: check stream-health messages and investigate rights or Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner; valid encoding does not resolve a rights issue.
- YouTube does not accept the encoder output: verify the stream key’s selected protocol, server URL, codec, CBR settings, keyframe interval, and protocol-specific requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube loop without keeping a computer running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the file as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
