For a straightforward continuous YouTube broadcast, run FFmpeg on a Google Cloud virtual machine (VM), loop a compatible playlist, and send the output to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The VM keeps the encoder running without a home computer, but you must configure and monitor the process yourself. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate, more managed architecture for ingesting and transcoding a stream; it is not required for a basic FFmpeg-to-YouTube setup.
Choose the right Google Cloud approach
| Decision | FFmpeg on a Google Cloud VM | Google Cloud Live Stream API |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Run an encoder and publish directly to YouTube. | Ingest a live signal, transcode it to HLS or DASH, and save outputs to Cloud Storage; distribution to a remote endpoint can also be configured. |
| YouTube connection | Configure FFmpeg with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. | Configure remote distribution if you want to relay the service output to YouTube. |
| Best fit | One YouTube output and a software encoder meet your needs. | You need managed transcoding, HLS/DASH output, Cloud Storage output, backup input, or distribution features. |
| Implementation evidence | YouTube documents the encoder credential workflow. A turnkey Compute Engine deployment recipe is not established here. | Google documents the service components, but not an end-to-end YouTube deployment recipe. |
For most creators trying to loop recorded videos on one YouTube channel, start with the VM-and-FFmpeg path. Google describes the Live Stream API as receiving an encoder feed over RTMP or SRT, transcoding it, and producing HLS or DASH outputs; it is a different workflow, not a required layer between FFmpeg and YouTube. See Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview and its setup guidance.
What you need before starting
- A Google Cloud project with a VM that can access the media files and run FFmpeg continuously. VM sizing depends on whether you copy or transcode the media, its resolution and frame rate, and the workload; no universal VM size or price is established here.
- A playlist whose files can be concatenated with compatible stream layouts, or a plan to normalize or transcode incompatible items.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start time. Read YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- FFmpeg installed on the VM, a protected place for the YouTube stream key, and a process supervisor or service manager configured to restart and monitor the encoder.
Set up a continuous FFmpeg stream from a Google Cloud VM
1. Prepare the playlist files
Put the videos on the VM or make them reliably accessible to the FFmpeg process. For concat-demuxer playlists, input files need compatible streams. Differences in codecs, stream structure, or other relevant properties can cause concatenation or transitions to fail. Normalize or transcode the files when needed, then test every transition before relying on the playlist. FFmpeg explains the roles and constraints of concatenation in its media concatenation FAQ.
2. Get the YouTube ingest credentials
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Enter those values in the encoder’s output settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this workflow.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not place it in public scripts, source control, or logs. Restrict access to whichever configuration holds it.

This is a command shape, not a complete copy-and-run configuration. Replace the placeholders with the actual input and the server URL/key from Live Control Room, and choose input handling, encoding options, and output settings that fit your media and YouTube’s current ingest requirements. The correct playlist arrangement and whether to transcode depend on the files. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop in its main options reference. Google’s example of FFmpeg for a Live Stream API input demonstrates FLV output for RTMP, but it is not a YouTube-specific command; see Google’s FFmpeg guidance.
For a multi-file playlist, build a compatible concat input and loop the resulting input, or use another playlist arrangement appropriate to your files. Do not assume a playlist of arbitrary videos will work unchanged with the concat demuxer.

4. Keep the process alive and verify playback
Run FFmpeg under a service manager or supervisor so it can be restarted after a process or VM interruption. Configure monitoring appropriate to your uptime needs; these are deployment recommendations, not a tested Google Cloud configuration. Before depending on the stream, check the Live Control Room preview, audio and video continuity, and each playlist transition. Also confirm the VM has access to the media for the full run and that the encoder remains active after a restart.
Use the Live Stream API when its managed workflow is useful
With the API route, an encoder sends RTMP or SRT to a Google Cloud input endpoint; a channel transcodes the input into HLS or DASH outputs saved to Cloud Storage. Google also documents primary and backup inputs, live-to-VOD, and channel events. If the destination is YouTube, remote distribution must be configured for the destination; Google documents RTMP or SRT distribution to remote endpoints, whose URI includes the remote server and stream key. Review the API overview and the distribution instructions.

- Archiving: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish an archive guarantee for a single stream lasting longer than 12 hours. If the archive matters, plan shorter segments or make an independent recording. YouTube’s encoder help page
- Transitions: A playlist that starts successfully can still encounter problems at a file boundary. Test audio and video across every transition, especially when items came from different sources or have different stream properties.
- Costs and capacity: Cloud cost depends on the VM, region, runtime, network use, and whether FFmpeg transcodes. Check current Google Cloud pricing and benchmark the actual workload before choosing capacity; no specific VM cost or sizing figure is established here.
- Copyright and channel rules: Confirm that you have rights to stream every recording and comply with YouTube’s applicable rules. A continuous loop does not change the rights status of its contents.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | Live streaming has not been activated for the channel, or activation is still processing. | Check Live Control Room eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, as YouTube advises. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The server URL or stream key is missing, incorrect, or associated with a different stream. | Copy both values again from the intended stream in Live Control Room and verify FFmpeg’s output configuration. Keep the key private. |
| FFmpeg errors when joining playlist items | Files have incompatible codecs or stream layouts for the concat method being used. | Inspect the inputs, normalize or transcode incompatible files, and test the playlist transitions. |
| The stream stops after an interruption | The FFmpeg process or VM stopped, and no supervisor restarted it. | Check VM and process status, configure restart behavior, and monitor the encoder. A restart may require checking the YouTube preview again. |
| No archive appears for a long broadcast | The stream exceeded the duration for which YouTube’s cited help page says automatic archiving applies. | Do not rely on automatic archiving for a single stream longer than 12 hours; use planned segments or an independent recording if needed. |
