How to Fix Permission Errors When FFmpeg Reads Playlist Files on Linux

To fix an FFmpeg permission error on Linux, first identify the exact path it cannot open, then check access as the same user and in the same working directory as the failing process. Grant only the access that process needs. A concat playlist, an HLS manifest, and a blocked FFmpeg protocol fail for different reasons; -safe 0 does not override Linux permissions.

Identify which kind of playlist you are using

“Playlist” can refer to different FFmpeg inputs, and the remedy depends on which one appears in your command.

  • Concat demuxer script: A text file with file directives. FFmpeg must open the script and then each listed media file. Paths may be relative or absolute. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
  • HLS manifest: An .m3u8 file that points to segments and may refer to keys. FFmpeg opens these through protocols; a protocol whitelist failure is not the same as a Linux filesystem permission denial. See FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Read the full diagnostic before changing anything. The denied path could be the playlist, a referenced file, an HLS segment or key, or even an output path mistakenly used as an input.

Check the process identity and working directory

Linux resolves a relative path from the current working directory of the process, which may not be the directory you expect when FFmpeg runs from a service, scheduled job, container, or script. Check the exact command and execution context—not just whether it works in your interactive shell.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check your shell context: Run id and pwd to see the current user, groups, and working directory.
  2. For a service, inspect its configuration: Confirm the configured user, group, working directory, and any filesystem restrictions. systemd settings can affect both the identity and paths visible to a service; see the systemd execution environment documentation.
  3. Reproduce the check as that identity: Where practical, run a diagnostic under the service account and in its real execution context. A successful test as your login user does not establish that the service can access the same files.

Inspect access along the full path

For a process to read a file, it needs read permission on that file and search (execute) permission on every directory in its path. Linux documents EACCES as occurring when access to a file is denied or search permission is denied for a directory in the path prefix; see the Linux access(2) manual.

Use these read-only checks on the playlist, then repeat them for every referenced local media file, segment, or key involved:

id
pwd
namei -l /path/to/playlist.txt
ls -l /path/to/playlist.txt
getfacl /path/to/playlist.txt

namei -l helps inspect ownership and permissions on each path component; getfacl shows access-control lists when present. Availability varies by distribution and installed packages. For relative entries in a concat script, resolve each path from FFmpeg’s actual working directory before inspecting it.

Make the narrowest permission correction

Choose a change that fits the intended ownership model, and cover both the playlist and the files it references. For example, an administrator may assign the needed files to a group used by the FFmpeg service, grant that group read access to those files, and grant group search access only on the required directories. An ACL can instead grant access to a specific service account. Verify the resulting permissions as the FFmpeg user.

Avoid reflexively using chmod -R 777 or running the whole job as root. Broad permissions can expose or alter unrelated files, and neither approach fixes a wrong relative path, a service’s restricted filesystem view, or a blocked protocol.

Use concat options only for concat errors

Check safe-path validation separately from file access

The concat demuxer’s safe option validates paths and directives; it does not grant filesystem permissions. The default is safe=1, which rejects unsafe names. Use -safe 0 only when path validation is the actual problem and the playlist is trusted. It accepts any filename but cannot make an unreadable file readable. See the concat demuxer documentation.

Example concat script:

ffconcat version 1.0
file '/srv/media/clip 1.mp4'
file /srv/media/clip2.mp4

Example invocation when the trusted script needs paths rejected by safe-path validation:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/lists/clips.txt -c copy output.mp4

Quoted or escaped paths can handle spaces and special characters, but the service still needs permission to traverse the directories and read every listed file. If the paths meet the default safety rules, omit -safe 0 and keep the default behavior.

Check confinement and mounts if permissions look correct

A service, container, chroot, private mount namespace, or mandatory-access-control policy can change which paths FFmpeg can see or access. Linux pathname resolution may use a process-specific root or mount namespace. Inspect the actual service or container configuration when the same path works in a shell but not in the job; the specific configuration is needed to identify the cause.

Distinguish protocol denial from filesystem denial

If the message says a protocol is not on an allowed list, inspect -protocol_whitelist and the protocols needed by the input and its nested resources. FFmpeg can restrict protocols used inside other protocols, as described in its protocol documentation. Changing Unix ownership or mode bits will not resolve a protocol restriction. Conversely, changing the whitelist will not grant access to a local file that Linux denies.

Troubleshoot by the object and failure

What fails What to check Likely direction
Playlist itself Exact path, service identity, directory search permissions, file read permission Correct the path or grant the FFmpeg identity the required access.
Concat-listed media file Each file entry, relative-path base, permissions on every parent directory Resolve the entry from the process working directory, then correct access to that file and path.
HLS segment or key Exact referenced resource and whether it is local or accessed through a protocol Check filesystem access for local paths; check protocol configuration for protocol-related errors.
Concat path rejected as unsafe Whether the diagnostic is from concat safe-path validation rather than Linux EACCES Prefer paths compatible with the default; for a trusted playlist that genuinely needs otherwise-rejected names, consider -safe 0.
Works in shell, fails in service Configured user/group, working directory, mount visibility, and confinement settings Reproduce under the service’s real identity and filesystem context.
Output path cannot be opened Whether the denied path is the output, not a playlist input Check write permission and directory access for the output location.
