How to Add a Countdown or Slate Between Videos in a YouTube Loop Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To put a countdown or slate between prerecorded videos in a YouTube Live loop, build the interstitial into the playback sequence or explicitly arrange a scene transition in OBS Studio. OBS’s VLC Video source can play and loop a playlist, but its documentation does not describe automatically inserting a separate slate after each playlist item. Test the sequence in OBS preview before sending it to YouTube.

Choose how the interstitial will play

A slate can be a still image or text; a moving countdown with optional audio is usually easiest to prepare as a video file. For a slate after every clip, make each clip-and-slate pair part of the ordered sequence, or build and test an OBS scene/source arrangement that explicitly switches to the interstitial. Do not rely on VLC Video to insert a separate asset between playlist entries automatically.

Build a looping sequence in OBS

  1. Install OBS and VLC

Install OBS Studio and, if you plan to use its VLC Video source, VLC as well. OBS says the VLC source requires VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

  2. Add the playlist

In OBS, create or select a scene, then add a VLC Video source. Add your video files in the order you want them to play. In the source properties, enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart after its final item. OBS documents this setting and notes that it is on by default, but check the current setting rather than assuming it is enabled.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  3. Add the countdown or slate

For a countdown with motion or sound, add a prepared countdown video as a media source. For a static slate, add an image; for simple customizable wording, use a text source. OBS describes media and text sources in its Sources Guide. Arrange your sequence so the interstitial actually appears between clips, then check the scene in preview, including timing, visibility, and audio.

  4. Test the full loop

Preview the transitions across several playlist items, including the transition from the final item back to the first. Confirm that the slate or countdown appears where intended and that its audio does not unexpectedly overlap the next clip. A playlist loop by itself only establishes that the list repeats; it does not establish a per-item interstitial transition.

Send the OBS output to YouTube Live

  1. Get the stream details

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with someone who should not control the stream.

  2. Start and verify the encoder feed

Start streaming from OBS. In YouTube Live Control Room, check that the incoming preview appears and that the video, slate timing, and audio are correct. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the preview and then click Go live.

  3. End the broadcast

Stop sending content from the encoder and follow the Live Control Room’s end-stream flow as appropriate. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that same automatic archive behavior for a longer stream.

What must stay running with the OBS method?

OBS reads the playlist from the local machine. Keep the computer, media files, OBS, and internet connection available while the broadcast runs. An interruption to the local encoder or connection can interrupt the feed; the cited OBS and YouTube workflow does not establish automatic recovery for a dropped connection.

Check copyright and channel eligibility

Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to use. Adding a countdown or slate does not grant rights to the clips, music, or images in the loop. Review YouTube’s current live-stream rules and your channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio before broadcasting; this workflow does not guarantee monetization or protection from copyright claims.
