Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A running process by itself does not prove that video is advancing or reaching YouTube.
What to monitor
| Layer | Question it answers | Useful signal |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg process | Did the encoder stop or restart? | Process state, exit status, and restart history |
| FFmpeg progress | Is the process still producing output? | Changing progress timestamps or frame and media-time counters |
| VPS and network | Can the host keep encoding and sending data? | CPU, memory, disk, and outbound network traffic |
| YouTube ingest | Is YouTube receiving the stream without reported problems? | Live Control Room health indicator and timestamped status messages |
Use independent signals from these layers. A green process check cannot tell you whether FFmpeg is stalled, the VPS is overloaded, or YouTube is reporting an ingest error.
Monitor FFmpeg process and progress
Track process exits and restarts
Run FFmpeg under a service manager or another supervisor that records its exit status and restart history. Configure a deliberate restart policy, and alert if the process exits unexpectedly or repeatedly restarts. A supervisor can report that a process exists; it cannot establish that useful media is still being sent.
Check that output advances
Enable FFmpeg progress output and have an external check verify that its timestamps or frame and media-time counters keep changing. FFmpeg documents -progress as program-friendly periodic key/value output and provides a configurable statistics period. Confirm the exact options against the FFmpeg version installed on your VPS: the online documentation follows the newest revision and is regenerated nightly. See the FFmpeg documentation index.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make your check distinguish a missing process from a live process whose progress output has gone stale. Set a stale-progress window based on the cadence you configure and the stream’s normal behavior; do not treat one delayed update as proof of failure.
Keep the stream key secret
YouTube encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key. Treat the stream key as a credential: keep it out of public dashboards, alert messages, shared logs, and command examples. If it is exposed, replace it using YouTube’s current encoder setup. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.

Watch the VPS and outbound connection
Measure host resources
Track CPU, memory, disk space, and network traffic with the Linux tools or monitoring system available on your VPS. YouTube specifically recommends checking CPU load when troubleshooting encoder problems. Disk checks are useful operationally if your setup writes logs, temporary files, or local archives.
Choose alert thresholds and time windows from the stream’s normal operating behavior and the VPS capacity. A brief CPU spike is not the same as sustained saturation, and a planned restart is not the same as an unexplained restart. There is no universal threshold that suits every encoder, resolution, and server.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Test the outbound path when needed
If FFmpeg appears to be producing healthy output but the stream is missing or degraded, test the VPS’s outbound internet connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection when encoder output appears healthy. This helps separate a host or encoder problem from a delivery problem. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Verify YouTube ingest in Live Control Room
Check YouTube Live Control Room while the stream is running. Its stream health indicator and status messages provide destination-side evidence that a process monitor cannot. Google / YouTube Help says the dashboard checks the stream sent to YouTube; errors appear beside the health indicator and include timestamps. Red errors are critical and yellow errors are moderate. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages and Live Control Room stream metrics.

YouTube lists format and bitrate mismatches among possible ingest errors. Compare the configured FFmpeg output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your chosen resolution and protocol instead of assuming a process that is advancing is configured correctly. The error guidance recommends an audio bitrate of 128 Kbps and a sample rate of 44.1 KHz in the cases it describes; these are support recommendations for those cases, not universal settings for every stream. Consult YouTube’s current settings for your stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use FFmpeg reconnect options carefully
FFmpeg’s protocol options include reconnect behavior for some disconnections, live or endless-input EOF conditions, TCP/TLS connection errors, and selected HTTP errors. Retry counts, delays, and total delay can also be limited. Which options apply depends on the protocol and the input/output path, so check the FFmpeg protocol documentation and confirm the syntax against your installed version.

Reconnect options can help with eligible transport interruptions; they do not prove that the stream recovered. Alert on repeated reconnects or prolonged lack of progress, then verify both that FFmpeg advances again and that YouTube reports healthy ingest.
Troubleshoot a stream that looks offline or degraded
- Check the process. Confirm whether FFmpeg is present and review its exit status and restart history. If it is absent, inspect the supervisor and recent logs before restarting it.
- Check progress and logs. Verify that progress output continues to change. Review recent messages for encoder errors, stalled output, or repeated reconnects. FFmpeg’s documentation index links to its command-line documentation.
- Check YouTube’s view of the stream. Open Live Control Room and inspect the health indicator and timestamped status messages. A process that is running may still have an ingest problem.
- If picture or sound is degraded, inspect encoding and host load. Review FFmpeg errors and CPU load; YouTube also recommends checking the source path and a local archive where available. See its troubleshooting guidance.
- If encoder output looks healthy, test outbound connectivity. Check the VPS’s ability to send data to the internet, as YouTube recommends.
- If YouTube reports format or bitrate errors, compare settings. Check your configured output against YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the selected resolution and protocol. See YouTube’s error guidance.
- After a restart or reconnect, verify recovery at both ends. Confirm that FFmpeg progress advances and that YouTube’s ingest health returns to a healthy state; do not infer recovery from a successful process restart alone.
