A stream stopping after a few hours does not point to one specific cause. Find out first whether FFmpeg exited, its input stopped, the network connection failed, YouTube ingest became unhealthy, or only the viewer-facing broadcast stopped. Match the failure time against FFmpeg’s final log lines and exit status, the input’s state, and YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages before changing settings.
Identify which part of the stream stopped
Record the exact time the problem occurred. A stopped player alone does not prove that FFmpeg exited: FFmpeg may still be running while the input, outgoing connection, or YouTube ingest has a problem. YouTube’s live streaming error messages documentation describes timestamped errors in the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room.
- FFmpeg process: Check whether the process is still running. If it exited, save its exit status and the final lines of its log.
- Input or source: Check whether it was still live or readable at the failure time and whether FFmpeg was still receiving packets.
- Network and output: If FFmpeg reports an I/O error, determine whether it refers to reading the input or writing the output, and identify the protocol involved.
- YouTube ingest: Look for a timestamped health message corresponding to the interruption. A message about stream settings points to a different fix from a process exit or source failure.
Runtime by itself is not a diagnosis. Without the command and FFmpeg version, logs at the stop time, input behavior, and YouTube health messages, there is not enough evidence to identify the cause of a particular stream failure.
Read YouTube’s stream-health messages first
YouTube’s error-message guide explains that the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the incoming stream and show timestamped errors alongside a health indicator. The guide classifies red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If a message lines up with the failure time, address the named problem before changing unrelated FFmpeg options. YouTube’s listed causes include incorrect stream format, video or audio settings, bitrate, and keyframe frequency. A configuration warning, dropped connection, FFmpeg exit, and input that has ended are distinct fault classes; do not treat them as interchangeable.
Check the encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance
YouTube’s encoder settings guide lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. For RTMP/RTMPS it specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds.

Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the row that matches the stream rather than applying one number to every setup. For example, YouTube’s current table lists H.264 1080p at 30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; those figures are not universal bitrate targets. Specifications can change, so check YouTube’s current table for the format you send.
- Confirm that the configured video codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio format match the stream you intend to send.
- Check the keyframe interval and whether the stream uses CBR.
- Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s guidance for that codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Use the timestamped YouTube error, if present, to decide which setting needs attention rather than changing several settings at once.
Separate input failures from connection problems
If FFmpeg remains alive but stops receiving packets, investigate the input source and its uptime or reconnect behavior. If FFmpeg exits with an I/O error, determine whether the failing I/O was on the input or output side. If YouTube reports a settings or format issue, compare the encoder configuration with the specific message and YouTube’s guidance.

YouTube advises testing upload bitrate, choosing a quality that the available connection can carry reliably, and monitoring stream health during the event. It also recommends testing beforehand with audio and movement similar to the real stream. If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, a temporary wired Ethernet test can help compare the connection paths; Ethernet is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix.
Use FFmpeg recovery options only when they match the protocol
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes options for particular protocol handlers. Options can differ between reading and writing, so confirm the actual input or output protocol and check the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version before adding a timeout or reconnect flag.

In particular, FFmpeg’s general documentation describes timeout and ignore_io_errors for HTTP output. That does not establish that those options work for RTMP output. Do not copy HTTP-specific recovery flags into an RTMP command as a presumed fix. If the evidence points to a network interruption, choose recovery behavior documented for the relevant protocol and consider how a watchdog or restart design should respond to that failure.
Choose the next fix from the evidence
| What you observe | Where to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exited | Its exit status and final log lines | Identify whether the input or output failed and inspect that protocol’s documented behavior. |
| FFmpeg remains up, but source packets stop | Input or source continuity | Check whether the source ended or stalled and how it handles reconnects. |
| YouTube reports a timestamped format or settings error | Incoming stream and encoder configuration | Match the message to YouTube’s format, audio/video, bitrate, or keyframe guidance. |
| Stream health degrades when upload varies | Sustained upload reliability | Test the connection and select a quality it can carry reliably. |
| Evidence points to a network interruption | Relevant input or output protocol | Check protocol-specific I/O and recovery options; do not assume flags for another protocol apply. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without depending on a home computer and connection, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
