How to Stream a Folder of Videos to YouTube Live in a Loop

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube Live does not loop a folder on its own. To stream a folder of videos in a loop, use an encoder that can select or playlist those files and repeat them, then send its live feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. The exact folder, playlist, and repeat controls depend on the encoder you choose.

What you need before starting

  • A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  • An encoder—software or a hardware device—that can play the video files you want and loop them. YouTube’s general setup instructions do not specify a universal folder selector or repeat control, so check the encoder’s current documentation for supported formats and restart behavior.
  • The encoder’s outgoing feed settings and the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a password; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  • Stable power and internet for the device running the encoder, plus a way to monitor the stream’s audio and video.

YouTube describes the encoder’s role simply: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Set up the folder loop and connect it to YouTube

  1. Prepare the files. Put the videos you want to play into the folder or playlist you will use. Confirm in the encoder’s documentation that it supports their formats, and decide the order in which they should play.
  2. Configure playback in the encoder. Select the files or playlist, enable its repeat or loop option, and check what happens when playback reaches the end or a file fails. These controls belong to the encoder, not YouTube Studio; menu names and recovery behavior vary by product.
  3. Enable live streaming and create the YouTube stream. If this is your first broadcast, enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Choose or create the stream settings you need.
  4. Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. Keep the key private. YouTube documents reusing stream settings and provides auto-start and auto-stop options, but those options do not guarantee that a particular encoder will restart a playlist after a disconnection. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
  5. Send a test feed. Start the encoder so it sends the loop to YouTube. Check the Live Control Room preview and verify both picture and sound before going live. YouTube recommends testing the workflow before a real broadcast.
  6. Go live and monitor playback. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and use Live Control Room’s Go live control when applicable. Keep monitoring audio and video, and confirm the encoder continues through a file change and loop restart.

Schedule enough time for setup

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before a planned broadcast and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Allow extra time for first-time live-stream enablement, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours. Review YouTube’s live-streaming tips and live-stream setup guidance.

Plan for long-running loops

Archives and DVR

YouTube can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours. Do not count on a complete automatic archive for a stream that reaches or exceeds 12 hours; arrange a separate recording or archive process if you need a complete copy. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams beyond 12 hours. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Copyright and channel rules

Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to use. A video being prerecorded, repeated, or available online does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Check the rights for every clip, soundtrack, and image in the playlist, and review YouTube’s current policies before broadcasting. Also consider whether a repetitive stream meets YouTube’s rules for monetization and reused content; being live does not automatically make reused material eligible.

Troubleshoot common loop problems

  • YouTube receives no picture or audio: Check that the encoder is sending, the stream URL and key are entered correctly, and the Live Control Room preview has loaded. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
  • The playlist stops at the last file: Verify that repeat is enabled for the playlist or folder, rather than for only the current video. Consult the encoder’s documentation for its precise loop behavior.
  • A file is skipped or will not play: Confirm that the encoder supports that file’s format and encoding. Test each file individually and use a supported format if needed; YouTube’s generic setup instructions do not specify formats for third-party encoders.
  • The stream drops and does not resume: Check the encoder’s restart and reconnection settings and its documentation. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls are stream settings, not proof that the encoder will restore a playlist after a disconnect.
  • The preview works but the broadcast is not public: Check the stream’s scheduled status and visibility in Live Control Room, and use its Go live control when the scheduled workflow requires it.
  • The archive or rewind is incomplete: For streams at or beyond 12 hours, YouTube’s automatic archive and DVR behavior have limitations. Use separate recording and playback options if those outcomes are essential.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer or home internet connection to keep the loop running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
