Yes—viewers can choose among the playback resolutions YouTube creates from a live stream. That is different from changing the resolution your encoder sends as a playlist moves between videos: YouTube documents automatic transcoding and input-resolution detection, but does not establish that switching the incoming resolution file by file is supported or seamless. For a steady loop, use one output resolution and frame rate, then test the stream before making it public.
Two meanings of “different resolutions”
- Different playback options for viewers: Yes. YouTube says it automatically transcodes an incoming live feed into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Your encoder sends one feed; it does not need to send a separate feed for each viewer quality option. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance explains this process.
- Changing the encoder’s input resolution as the loop advances: Do not assume this will work. The cited YouTube guidance describes detecting or manually selecting the incoming resolution, but does not document changing it for each file in a playlist. Use a consistent encoder output format for the broadcast.
How to loop videos with OBS
OBS supports looping a single media file and repeating a playlist. Its VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS’s Media Sources guide describes the available source settings.
- Set up the source: In OBS, add a Media Source for one video and enable its loop option. For a playlist, add a VLC Video source, select the files, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- Choose a stable output: Set the OBS output resolution and frame rate once for the broadcast, selecting values that fit your material and connection. YouTube detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate by default. If you need to select resolution manually, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Connect OBS to YouTube: In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open a stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields in OBS. Keep the key private. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the workflow.
- Set bitrate for the chosen feed: YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for the incoming encoder feed, not a guaranteed viewer bitrate; other resolutions and codecs have separate guidance. Check the current YouTube bitrate table and leave enough upload capacity for a reliable stream.
- Test before going public: Run the playlist privately or unlisted with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. Check transitions between files, black bars or cropping, audio continuity, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health while live.
What happens when the playlist files have different dimensions?
The encoder still sends its selected output format to YouTube. A source file with different dimensions may therefore appear with bars, cropping, or scaling depending on the production setup. The cited YouTube documentation does not promise a seamless change in incoming resolution between playlist items. Preview mixed-resolution files in the actual OBS scene and verify the result before a public stream; adjust the scene layout or prepare consistent source files if the framing is unsuitable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a local computer and home connection running for the whole broadcast, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, and the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
