How to Restart an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Automatically on a VPS

Run FFmpeg under a systemd service with Restart=on-failure and a deliberate restart delay. If the output path supports it, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can also attempt to recover from certain output errors while the process stays alive. These are separate recovery layers: neither guarantees seamless playback, restores the same input position, or proves that YouTube’s live event is still receiving audio and video.

Choose the recovery layer that matches the failure

Layer What it can do What it does not establish
FFmpeg FIFO output recovery For supported output configurations, options such as attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time can make FFmpeg attempt recovery from certain output failures without exiting. See the FFmpeg documentation and confirm support for your installed build and output path. It is not a universal publishing retry mechanism. Its behavior depends on the muxer, protocol, and build.
systemd process restart Starts FFmpeg again after the service exits under conditions covered by its restart policy, after the configured delay. It does not repair an invalid command, bad stream key, missing input, or persistent network fault; nor does it guarantee continuity at YouTube.

For a long-running service, systemd project guidance recommends Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal; the NEWS page is not tied to the systemd release on your VPS, so check your distribution’s local manual and service conventions: systemd NEWS.

Create a systemd service for your existing FFmpeg command

The example below shows the unit structure, not a universal file for every Linux distribution. Replace the executable path, input, and output options with the command that already works on your VPS. Keep the actual YouTube stream key out of broadly readable unit files, scripts, and logs; use a secret-handling method appropriate to your deployment and restrict file permissions.

1. Write the unit

Create a service file using your distribution’s convention, for example /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service. A minimal template is:

Use a dedicated service account where practical, and ensure it can read the media and any protected configuration it needs. The five-second delay is an example, not a recommended value for every deployment: choose a delay that avoids a rapid retry loop without making recovery unreasonably slow. systemd start limits and the unit’s other requirements also affect retries; check man systemd.service and your local systemd documentation.

Do not put a live stream key in the example command or a world-readable script. A key is a credential: limit who can read its storage, and avoid diagnostic output that prints it.

2. Load, enable, and start the service

  1. After saving the unit, ask systemd to reload unit definitions: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable the service at boot and start it now: sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service.
  3. Check the current service state: sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service.
  4. Read recent logs: sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager. To follow new log entries, use sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f.

A service showing as active means the process is running; it does not by itself mean YouTube is receiving usable frames and audio.

Set YouTube ingest options for the actual stream

Match encoder settings to the stream’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and ingest path. YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live ingest, a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its listed RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings call for CBR. The current guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options, and AAC or MP3 audio; confirm compatibility for your exact path and consult the current table rather than copying a bitrate from a different configuration: YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube states that its recommended bitrate ranges depend on the video ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not treat a single bitrate as suitable for every stream. FFmpeg protocol options are also version- and direction-sensitive: check the FFmpeg protocols documentation and the documentation for the FFmpeg build installed on your VPS. Input-side HTTP reconnect flags are not a universal fix for RTMP or RTMPS publishing failures.

Add FIFO recovery only when the output supports it

FFmpeg documents FIFO muxer recovery controls including attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time. These relate to recovery inside a supported output configuration; they are not substitutes for supervising the process, and the exact behavior depends on the muxer, protocol, and installed build. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the FIFO muxer and test the configuration you intend to run. Do not assume that similarly named reconnect options for reading input solve an output connection failure.

Test recovery and verify the viewer-facing result

  1. Before relying on the service for an event, test with representative motion and audio, as YouTube recommends. Confirm the normal stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Cause a controlled process exit in a safe test window, then check systemctl status and the service journal to confirm systemd attempted a restart.
  3. Look for repeated exits, authentication errors, missing input, permission failures, and connection errors in the journal. A restart loop means the underlying failure still needs attention.
  4. After recovery, inspect stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room, then check live playback. Confirm that both video and audio are reaching viewers; process state alone is not enough.

YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and messages during the event. A process relaunch does not establish whether the same live event remains available or whether playback resumes seamlessly, so verify those outcomes in YouTube rather than inferring them from a successful systemd restart.

Troubleshoot common restart failures

  • The service fails immediately: inspect journalctl -u youtube-stream.service for command syntax, executable path, input path, permissions, or environment differences from your interactive shell. Correct the root error before increasing retries.
  • It restarts repeatedly: a restart policy cannot fix a persistent failure. Check the stream key, input availability, network path, and logs; keep a sensible delay and account for local start limits rather than creating a rapid loop.
  • systemd says active but YouTube is not receiving video: check FFmpeg output errors and YouTube Live Control Room stream health. Confirm the ingest URL and protocol, key, and encoder settings.
  • FIFO recovery does not help: confirm that the chosen output configuration uses the FIFO muxer and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the options as configured. FIFO recovery is not a general-purpose guarantee for every protocol failure.
  • The service works manually but not under systemd: check the service account, file access, environment, and paths. Services commonly run with different permissions and environment from an administrator’s shell.
  • The stream returns but playback is interrupted or starts elsewhere: process and output recovery do not promise a seamless viewer experience or restoration of the prior media position. Verify the live event and playback separately.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube stream rather than managing an encoder process on a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for uploaded videos, not live camera feeds, and streams to YouTube only.
