Before you start
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance also states that streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Allow time for activation: YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Do not leave activation until event day. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- Have the finished video file available on the computer, plus a reliable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity.
- Use footage and audio you have the right to broadcast, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube’s warning about a scheduled stream’s trailer specifically says the trailer must not infringe other content; it is not a complete account of copyright rules for every stream. YouTube supports computer streaming through encoder software or standalone hardware. A hardware encoder is not a prerequisite for playing a prerecorded video; YouTube says you do not need expensive equipment to get started. YouTube live streaming tips for computers · YouTube streaming tips
Set up a scheduled or immediate broadcast
Schedule an event in advance
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Open the Manage tab and schedule the stream, then configure its details and settings.
- Share the upcoming watch-page URL. Viewers can opt into reminders for a scheduled event. Scheduling is useful when you want to promote the broadcast before it starts. Manage live stream settings
Start an immediate stream
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live and open an immediate stream rather than scheduling one. This suits an unplanned broadcast. The stream still needs an encoder feed and a preview check before you launch it.
Connect the computer encoder and load the video
- Get the connection details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the stream’s encoder settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. If your encoder offers YouTube as a service, select it and provide the key as requested; otherwise paste the URL into the encoder’s server field and the key into its stream-key field. - Protect the stream key. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that let your encoder send the feed. Do not share it publicly. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Load the prerecorded file in your encoder. Use the encoder’s current documentation for its media-file source or playback feature. The exact steps vary by application and version; YouTube’s encoder connection instructions do not establish a current menu path for adding a local file to a particular desktop program. Before the event, confirm that the encoder is playing the intended video and that its audio is present.
- Check the video and audio feed. Start sending the feed from the encoder early enough for YouTube’s Live Control Room preview to appear. Check picture, sound, and playback position before launching the public broadcast.
Check upload bandwidth and timing
YouTube advises that your total stream bitrate stay below the upload bandwidth available to the computer and recommends keeping about 20% headroom. A shared network may leave less bandwidth available than a speed test suggests. Check upload capacity and test the setup ahead of time. YouTube streaming tips

- YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends setting up at least two hours ahead of an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview and verify both audio and video. If the connection or preview is unstable, fix it before going live rather than relying on the event start to reveal the problem. Encoder setup guidance
Go live, then end the stream cleanly
- For a scheduled stream, start sending the encoder feed and confirm that the Live Control Room preview looks and sounds right.
- When ready, click Go live in YouTube Studio.
- When the broadcast is over, use YouTube’s end-stream control, then stop the encoder from sending. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Choose software or hardware encoding

Troubleshoot common problems
The channel cannot go live
Check that the channel is verified, has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s stated minimum age requirement. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available. Live-streaming eligibility · Encoder setup
The encoder does not connect
Confirm that you copied the stream URL and key for the intended stream and entered them in the right fields. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the encoder.

The preview is missing, delayed, or unstable
Start the encoder earlier, check its connection details, and make sure the file is actually playing. Check upload speed and reduce competing network use if needed; keep the stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth with YouTube’s recommended 20% spare capacity. There is no sound or the wrong video appears
Verify the selected file and playback position in the encoder, then inspect its audio/video feed before going live. File-source and audio-routing controls depend on the encoder you use, so consult that application’s current documentation rather than assuming a menu path that may not match your version.
