You can run a continuous YouTube live stream from a Linux VPS by connecting an encoder on the server to the stream URL and stream key in YouTube Studio. The VPS replaces a computer at home, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming: you still need a stable server, a correctly configured encoder, and ongoing monitoring.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- A Linux VPS with enough CPU capacity for your chosen workflow and sufficient sustained outbound network transfer. YouTube does not specify a universal minimum VPS size for this setup.
- Video and audio you have the right to stream, plus an encoder such as FFmpeg installed on the VPS.
- A private stream key and the ingest server URL from YouTube Studio. Anyone with the key may be able to connect to your stream, so treat it as a secret.
Decide whether the server will copy compatible media without re-encoding or transcode it. Transcoding uses more CPU; the media format, resolution, frame rate, number of outputs, and where files are stored also affect the VPS workload.
Set up the stream in YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming on your channel in advance. If this is your first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select an existing one, then locate the stream URL and stream key in the encoder or stream settings. YouTube’s interface can change; use the values shown for the stream you intend to run.
- Copy the server URL and key into your encoder configuration. Do not post the key publicly or include it in a publicly readable script, log, or repository. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
Prepare the Linux VPS and media
Install an encoder such as FFmpeg using the package source appropriate to your Linux distribution, and confirm the installed build supports your intended input and output formats. Keep the media on the VPS or on storage the encoder can read reliably. For a 24/7 schedule, plan how files will repeat or advance; a single-file loop and a playlist-based rotation require different input handling.
The exact FFmpeg command depends on whether you loop one file, manage a playlist, transcode, or stream-copy. There is no single command that is safe to prescribe for all those cases. Build the command around your actual input and the ingest details from YouTube, and test it with representative audio and video before relying on it.

Choose encoder settings and ingest protocol
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings as the reference for the stream you configure. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. Do not exceed a four-second keyframe interval. Select a bitrate your VPS can sustain continuously rather than choosing a high setting that risks unstable delivery.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Check that your encoder supports it and that its server name, port, and SSL/TLS settings match the ingest details. YouTube’s RTMPS ingest documentation describes connection issues that can result from incorrect server names, ports, or SSL setup.

HLS is an alternative for supported needs such as HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. It sends video in segments, so YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP. Choose it only when the use case and encoder support call for it; confirm YouTube’s current requirements in its HLS ingest guidance.
YouTube transcodes incoming live video into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and connections. That does not compensate for an invalid or unstable feed from your encoder.

Start with a test and monitor stream health
- Start the encoder with the YouTube server URL and stream key, and use a test stream or planned private/unlisted setup where appropriate to check the feed before a public launch.
- Check that both picture and sound arrive, that playback is stable, and that the intended resolution and frame rate are being sent. Test using media representative of the real program, not only a short silent clip.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators in Live Control Room while the encoder runs. YouTube’s stream health documentation explains the health information available through its live-streaming tools and API.
- On the VPS, review encoder output and system resource use. A process supervisor, restart policy, logs, and alerts are useful operational choices, but configure and test them for your distribution and encoder rather than assuming they prevent every interruption.
Size and operate the VPS realistically
No universal CPU, RAM, disk, or bandwidth minimum is established for every Linux VPS 24/7 stream. A server copying a compatible encoded file has a different CPU workload from one transcoding video; higher resolutions, frame rates, simultaneous outputs, and media access patterns change the demands too.
Before committing to a host, compare its sustained outbound transfer allowance, network reliability, CPU capacity for your encoding mode, storage, support, and regional availability. Confirm the provider’s current transfer and acceptable-use terms. Test the workload you actually intend to run, then monitor resource consumption and YouTube stream health over time. A VPS is still subject to host, network, encoder, and ingest failures.

Plan for long-running streams and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single stream that runs longer than 12 hours will be archived. If you need a replay, plan a stream schedule and recording approach that does not depend on automatic archiving a longer continuous broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance for its current archive information.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
- Use recordings, music, images, and other material you own or are licensed to stream. A continuous loop does not grant rights to copyrighted material.
- Check YouTube’s live-stream rules and channel status before scheduling the broadcast. Restrictions can affect whether a channel may go live or whether a stream remains available.
- Do not assume that repeating a recording automatically makes a channel eligible for monetization. Monetization decisions depend on YouTube’s policies and review of the channel’s content; a technically active stream is not a guarantee of approval.
Troubleshooting common VPS stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a stream | Incorrect ingest URL or key, unavailable live activation, or connection settings | Confirm the stream is enabled, copy the URL and key again from the selected stream in Studio, and check the encoder’s protocol, hostname, port, and TLS settings. |
| Stream health reports unstable delivery | Bitrate exceeds reliable upload capacity or the VPS/network is inconsistent | Reduce the outgoing bitrate to a level the host can sustain, verify the provider’s transfer/network conditions, and watch health indicators during a representative test. |
| Video freezes, drops frames, or the encoder falls behind | The selected encoding workload may exceed available CPU, or media reads may be unreliable | Check CPU and system load, compare transcoding versus stream-copying needs, and verify the media is accessible without interruption. |
| Audio or video is missing or incompatible | Input media or encoder output does not match the intended supported configuration | Test with representative audio and video, confirm codec and frame-rate settings against YouTube’s encoder guidance, and inspect encoder logs. |
| Connection fails when using RTMPS | Wrong server name, port, or SSL/TLS configuration | Match the encoder configuration to YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest details and review its connection guidance. |
| The stream stops after an unexpected server or encoder failure | A VPS, network, process, or ingest interruption occurred | Check logs and host status, restart the encoder after fixing the underlying issue, and confirm YouTube receives the feed again. A restart policy can help recover a stopped process but cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. |
