How to Run a Continuous YouTube Stream on a Raspberry Pi Without Re-encoding

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can use a Raspberry Pi as a low-overhead relay for a YouTube Live stream when the incoming video and audio are already encoded in formats YouTube accepts. FFmpeg’s -c copy stream-copy mode sends encoded packets without decoding or re-encoding them, so it does not resize, filter, or improve the source. Compatibility depends on the input codecs, timestamps, audio, and output muxing; it is not a universal passthrough for every camera or file.

What “without re-encoding” means

In FFmpeg, -c copy selects stream copy: FFmpeg copies encoded packets rather than decoding them and encoding new ones. As the FFmpeg documentation puts it, “The simplest pipeline in ffmpeg is single-stream streamcopy, that is copying one input elementary stream’s packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding them.”

This can reduce the Pi’s work and avoid another lossy video encode, but it also means the source remains as it is. You cannot use stream copy to scale the picture, add an overlay, change frame rate, or convert an unsupported codec. Those changes require decoding and usually re-encoding.

YouTube also transcodes incoming streams for playback on different devices and network conditions. That happens on YouTube’s side and is separate from whether the Pi re-encodes the source before sending it.

Check whether your source can be copied to YouTube

Before configuring a long-running stream, establish what the source actually sends. “RTSP” describes a streaming protocol, not a guarantee that its video, audio, timestamps, or container can be passed directly to YouTube.

  • Video codec and parameters: YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS. Check the source’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current requirements.
  • Audio: Confirm that the source includes an audio stream in a format and configuration accepted by the destination. Do not assume video compatibility proves audio compatibility.
  • Timestamps and keyframes: Poor or irregular timestamps, or keyframes that do not meet ingestion expectations, can make an otherwise supported encoded stream fail or behave badly.
  • Muxing: The packets must fit the output container and YouTube ingestion path. FFmpeg notes that stream copy can fail when the target container needs information that is unavailable in the source.

YouTube’s published encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/HEVC/AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance before relying on a particular source configuration.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key using YouTube’s encoder workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Use the RTMPS URL provided for the stream when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  3. Treat the stream key as a password. It identifies where the encoder sends the broadcast; do not paste it into public scripts, screenshots, logs, or posts. YouTube explains stream-key management at Manage live stream settings. Reset the key if it is exposed.
  4. Set the event’s visibility, audience, and other YouTube options in Studio before starting. Check the preview in the Live Control Room rather than assuming a successful FFmpeg process means the public stream is ready.

Use FFmpeg stream copy from the Raspberry Pi

The following is a pattern, not a verified universal command or a Pi-specific tested recipe. Replace the input and RTMPS destination with values appropriate to your source and the URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Never publish a real stream key.

ffmpeg -i INPUT -map 0 -c copy -f flv "rtmps://.../STREAM_KEY"

  • -i INPUT identifies the file, camera URL, or other input. A particular RTSP camera may need different input options, authentication, or transport settings.
  • -map 0 asks FFmpeg to include all streams from the input. Change stream selection if the source has extra tracks or if only specific audio/video streams should be sent.
  • -c copy copies encoded streams without decoding or encoding them.
  • -f flv selects the FLV muxer commonly used with RTMP-family ingestion. The chosen output must remain compatible with the source streams and the endpoint.
  • The quoted RTMPS destination must be the actual stream URL and key supplied for your YouTube stream, not the illustrative text above.

FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation describes the limitations: stream copy cannot apply filters because filters operate on decoded frames, and it may fail when the target container needs information the input does not provide. If YouTube rejects the feed or reports unsupported settings, inspect the source and muxing compatibility before concluding that the Pi needs a more powerful encoder.

Choose stream settings and network capacity

For H.264, YouTube publishes the following bitrate guidance. These are YouTube recommendations and listed minimums, not guarantees that a given connection or source will work.

H.264 output YouTube listed minimum YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

In a stream-copy setup, FFmpeg does not create a new bitrate target by re-encoding. The source’s actual bitrate is what the Pi relays, so verify that it is suitable for the intended stream and that your internet upload can sustain it with headroom. If the bitrate is too high for the connection, stream copy cannot reduce it; that requires a re-encode or a different source.

  • Measure the actual upload connection under realistic household or site conditions, not only its advertised maximum.
  • Leave margin above the outgoing stream bitrate for normal fluctuations and other network use.
  • Use representative content in a test stream, then check YouTube’s preview, audio/video playback, and stream-health messages.

What changes between Raspberry Pi models?

If the Pi is only copying an already encoded stream, its video-encoding hardware is not used for a new encode. Model differences matter when the Pi itself captures or must encode video.

Raspberry Pi’s Picamera2 manual says, “On Pi 4 and earlier devices there is dedicated hardware for H264 and MJPEG encoding.” The current Raspberry Pi camera-software documentation says Pi 5 uses software video encoders; its --low-latency option can reduce encoding latency at some cost to coding efficiency and potentially maximum frame rate. These differences do not change what -c copy does. Consult the Picamera2 manual and Raspberry Pi camera software documentation for model-specific capture and encoding details.

Plan for continuity, not just a successful start

A process that starts is not automatically a dependable continuous broadcast. YouTube recommends testing first, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring stream audio/video quality and health messages. A practical preflight and operating checklist is:

  • Run a representative test and confirm picture, audio, and stream health in YouTube Studio.
  • Verify upload capacity with margin above the source’s outgoing bitrate.
  • Watch for dropped network connectivity, a stopped FFmpeg process, source failure, storage issues if recording locally, and power interruptions.
  • Decide how you will notice a failure and restart or recover the feed; the sources cited here do not establish a particular Raspberry Pi watchdog, system service, UPS, or 24/7 configuration.
  • Define what “continuous” means for your channel: a long-running encoder process, one uninterrupted YouTube event, or a sequence of sessions.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish the archive outcome for streams longer than that, so do not assume an over-12-hour broadcast will be archived the same way. Check YouTube’s current encoder workflow guidance and plan stream duration and archive needs accordingly.

When stream copy is the wrong choice

  • You need to resize or change frame rate: use an encode path; copying packets cannot alter the image dimensions or timing.
  • You need overlays, compositing, or filters: these operate on decoded frames, so stream copy cannot apply them.
  • The source codec or stream parameters are not accepted: convert the stream to a supported configuration, which means re-encoding at least the affected stream.
  • YouTube reports a bitrate or keyframe mismatch: inspect whether the source itself meets the required settings. Copy mode cannot impose a new CBR bitrate or keyframe cadence.
  • The source has incompatible timestamps or muxing: diagnose the input and output requirements first. If packet passthrough cannot satisfy them, use a suitable conversion workflow rather than assuming every RTSP feed can be copied.

Troubleshooting common failures

FFmpeg exits with a codec or muxer error

Check the source’s codecs and stream layout, then confirm that each selected stream can be carried by the chosen output muxer and YouTube endpoint. Try mapping only the required audio and video streams instead of -map 0. If the encoded source is incompatible, stream copy cannot convert it.

YouTube shows no picture or reports an unsupported stream

Confirm that the correct RTMPS URL and key are in use, the source codec and parameters meet YouTube’s current settings, and timestamps and keyframes are valid. Use the Live Control Room preview and health status as diagnostic evidence rather than treating FFmpeg’s running state as proof of a healthy broadcast.

The stream starts but buffers or drops

Compare the actual outgoing bitrate with available upload capacity under load. Add upload headroom or reduce the source bitrate at its origin. Because -c copy does not lower bitrate, reducing it in FFmpeg requires an encoding workflow.

The audio is missing or wrong

Inspect the input’s audio streams and revise the mapping so the intended track is sent. Check that its codec and configuration are accepted. A video-only source will not gain audio through stream copy.

The Pi model seems unable to encode the source

First confirm that encoding is actually needed. In a compatible stream-copy path, the Pi is relaying packets, not using its video encoder to generate a new video stream. If capture, scaling, overlays, or codec conversion are required, model-specific encoding capability becomes relevant.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Technical compatibility does not grant rights to broadcast content. Before streaming a file, camera feed, music, or other material, confirm you have permission to use it and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules. YouTube may restrict or interrupt streams for policy or rights reasons even when the encoder settings are valid.
