Monitor a 24/7 YouTube stream in three places: OBS for encoder and rendering symptoms, your operating system for CPU use by process, and YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and status messages. These views answer different questions; a low CPU reading does not prove YouTube is receiving or playing the stream correctly.
What each monitor tells you
| View | What it helps you check | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| OBS status area and Stats | Local CPU use and frame-related performance indicators, including dropped frames. | Whether every problem is caused by CPU use or whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. |
| Operating-system CPU monitor | Overall CPU activity and, where available, which processes are using resources. | Whether the encoder output reaches YouTube or the live playback is healthy. |
| YouTube Live Control Room | Stream health and YouTube status messages or instructions. | Which local process is consuming CPU. |
Use the three views together. OBS reports local encoding and rendering symptoms, the operating system shows CPU activity, and YouTube reports the condition of the incoming stream. OBS describes dropped frames as encoded frames sent over the network that do not reach the destination; they are not interchangeable with a CPU percentage. OBS status and Stats guidance · YouTube stream health guidance
Set a baseline before the long broadcast
- Run a representative test. Use the same scene, encoder, resolution, frame rate, audio, and typical video movement planned for the 24/7 stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking representative audio and video. Confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room.
- Note the normal local workload. Observe OBS’s CPU indicator and open View > Stats for the extended performance view. Record the conditions alongside what you observe; a baseline is useful only when compared with the same workload.
- Check the platform view. In Live Control Room, confirm stream health and read any status messages. YouTube recommends monitoring health and messages during the event. A test can expose problems, but it cannot prove a stream will never fail.
CPU demand depends on the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so there is no universal CPU percentage that is safe for every computer and setup. OBS’s older system-requirements guidance also does not guarantee a computer will handle every combination of settings. OBS system requirements · YouTube live-stream testing guidance
Monitor OBS while live
Keep the status area visible
OBS’s status area can show CPU usage, preview frame rate, and dropped frames. Watch for changes from your test baseline rather than treating one reading as a verdict. The menu path documented in OBS community guidance is View > Stats; interface details can vary by OBS version. OBS Stats guidance
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use Stats to investigate a change
Open View > Stats when CPU use rises or frame performance changes. Compare the indicators with what the stream is doing: a complex animated scene or a change in encoder settings may demand more resources than a mostly static loop. OBS identifies encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as workload factors. Avoid diagnosing from CPU alone; correlate its movement with frame indicators and YouTube’s health messages.
Check operating-system CPU activity
macOS: Activity Monitor
- Open Activity Monitor and click CPU to view processor activity over time.
- Use the process list to see which processes are consuming CPU; the bottom of the window reports System, User, and Idle shares.
- For focused views, choose Window > CPU Usage for current activity or Window > CPU History for recent activity.
These are Apple’s documented Activity Monitor views. Apple: View CPU activity in Activity Monitor

Windows and Linux
The available platform-specific instructions here do not establish exact current Task Manager navigation for Windows or a universal CPU-monitor command for Linux. Use the CPU view built into your installed operating system or desktop environment, and consult its current documentation for exact controls rather than assuming every version or Linux desktop has the same menus.
Check YouTube stream health and bandwidth separately
Keep Live Control Room available during the broadcast and review stream health and any status messages. If OBS looks normal but YouTube reports a problem, the issue may be on the ingest or network side rather than a local CPU bottleneck. This distinction follows from the different information reported by the encoder and platform views; neither replaces the other.

YouTube recommends leaving upload bandwidth headroom: the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth, with 20% room recommended. That is a network recommendation, not a CPU threshold. YouTube: Troubleshoot your live stream
Troubleshoot rising CPU use or unstable performance
- CPU rises but YouTube health is good: Check the operating-system monitor to identify the process using resources. Compare activity with the test baseline and close unnecessary resource-heavy applications if they are contributing. OBS troubleshooting advises considering other resource-intensive applications. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting
- OBS frame indicators worsen: Check whether the encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity differs from the tested setup. These settings affect workload; reduce unnecessary scene work or revisit the setup if the computer cannot sustain it.
- CPU looks normal but YouTube reports poor health: Read the Live Control Room status message and check upload capacity and network stability. A healthy local CPU reading is not evidence of healthy delivery.
- OBS shows dropped frames: Investigate network delivery as well as CPU. OBS defines these as encoded frames sent over the network that do not reach the destination; use YouTube’s health view and check available upload bandwidth.
- The problem appears only after many hours: Compare current process activity and stream health with the baseline, then use the relevant message to distinguish local performance from ingest or connectivity symptoms. A successful initial test does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Plan archives separately from a 24/7 live run
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A nominal 24/7 broadcast exceeds that duration, so do not assume one archived video will contain the entire day-long stream. Live continuity and archive behavior are separate planning concerns.
