To loop nature footage on YouTube Live, prepare and review a clip whose ending blends naturally into its beginning, then use OBS Studio’s Media Source with Loop enabled. For a rotation of clips, use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist. Those settings repeat playback; they do not remove a visible jump or an audio click. Check the seam in the rendered video, test the full stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it.
1. Prepare footage that can repeat naturally
A loop is only as seamless as the transition between its last and first moments. Choose a stretch of footage with a steady viewpoint and no action that clearly moves in only one direction, such as a person entering the frame and never leaving. Landscapes, clouds, water, and other slowly changing scenes can be easier to loop, but still need inspection.
Check the picture at the boundary
- Identify the intended in-point and out-point, then compare the first and last frames. Look for changes in horizon position, exposure, cloud shapes, water highlights, and the position of moving subjects.
- If the cut feels abrupt, adjust the in- or out-point and review again. A short crossfade may soften a mismatch when it suits the scene.
- Watch the transition in the rendered loop, not just on the editing timeline. A crossfade can create doubled motion or an unwanted change in brightness; it is not automatically better than a well-matched cut.
Listen to the audio transition
Listen across the boundary, preferably with headphones. Check for a click, sudden silence, or a sharp change in wind, water, birds, or other ambience. Adjust the edit if needed and review the finished loop repeatedly so you can judge the transition in context.
2. Choose how OBS should repeat the video
Use one local file for a simple continuous scene, or a VLC playlist when you want a sequence of clips. OBS documents both methods in its Media Sources guide.

| OBS source | Best for | Loop behavior and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One prepared local clip | Turn on Loop to restart playback after the file ends; the setting is off by default. |
| VLC Video | A playlist of multiple media files | Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the list; it is on by default. VLC must be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS notes that the VLC installation must also be 64-bit. |
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among the supported formats for its Media Source. The loop control determines what happens at the end of playback; it does not edit the source or repair a noticeable seam.
Set up a single clip
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties. OBS has this setting off by default.
- Confirm the picture and audio play correctly, then watch the transition from the end of the file back to the beginning.
Set up a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC, according to OBS documentation.
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and build the playlist from your clips.
- Check Loop Playlist, which OBS enables by default, and watch the transition from the final playlist item to the first.
3. Configure and test the YouTube Live stream
Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio, then configure OBS with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection process. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream.

Use settings appropriate to your output
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance as the reference rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every resolution, frame rate, codec, and connection. As accessed on October 3, 2026, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published settings, accessed October 3, 2026—not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain a stream at those rates. Choose settings that match your source and available upload bandwidth.

Run a representative preflight
- Before announcing the stream, run a test using the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, and motion. YouTube recommends testing with audio and moving video similar to what viewers will see.
- Start the encoder, check the YouTube preview, and review stream health and any warnings or messages.
- Watch and listen through at least one complete restart in the actual stream output. A clean preview before the file ends does not show whether the seam works.
- During the broadcast, continue to monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages so you can respond if the connection or stream encounters a problem.
4. Check copyright before broadcasting
Use footage and audio that you created, have licensed, or otherwise have permission to use. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. Identified material can lead to a placeholder, warning, interruption, or termination if it remains. YouTube also notes that even licensed material may cause an interruption unless the rights owner adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and confirm any required permissions and allowlisting before you go live.
5. Know what YouTube archives—and what it does not promise
YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish archive behavior for streams lasting 12 hours or longer, so do not rely on it as a promise that a 24/7 broadcast will be saved. If you need a recording, plan a separate recording or backup workflow.

6. Choose a playback setup that fits your stream
For a basic single-clip or playlist loop, OBS is the straightforward software option. Other approaches suit different needs; the existence of a hardware feature does not make dedicated hardware necessary for a simple repeat.
| Approach | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source with Loop | One prepared clip running from an OBS computer | Simple repeat, but the local playback and streaming setup depend on that computer and its connection. |
| OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist | A fixed sequence of local clips | Requires VLC alongside OBS; check the final-to-first playlist seam. |
| AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream | An advanced hardware-based option for scheduling prerecorded media | YouTube describes it as a standalone H.264 encoder whose PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. It is optional; current price and availability are not established here. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded nature video to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer or home connection running, StreamNeo uploads and loops your video from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does OBS make the start and end of my clip match?
No. Its loop setting restarts playback; you need to edit and review the boundary yourself.
Can I use a YouTube stream key for a prerecorded loop?
Yes. Configure the encoder with the server URL and stream key shown for the YouTube Live stream you created or scheduled, and keep the key private.
Will every licensed song or clip stay uninterrupted on a live stream?
Not necessarily. YouTube says a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist even when you have a license.
