You do not need a desktop environment to stream from a Linux VPS: run FFmpeg over SSH, then let systemd supervise it so the process can survive logout and restart after some failures. First prove the FFmpeg command can reach YouTube over RTMPS; then move it into a protected systemd service and verify the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. A restart policy cannot repair a bad key, broken source, or failed ingest connection.
What you need before starting
- A Linux VPS with SSH access, sufficient storage for any media files, and network access to YouTube’s ingest service.
- An input that FFmpeg can read, such as a local recording, plus the codecs and output settings appropriate to that input.
- A YouTube live stream configuration and its current RTMPS ingest endpoint and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in screenshots, public logs, shell history, or a broadly readable service file.
- FFmpeg installed from your distribution’s supported package source or a trusted FFmpeg build. Check the installed build with
ffmpeg -versionand inspect its available options and encoders with its help output. The FFmpeg project notes that its online documentation is regenerated and may describe a newer revision than an older installed build: FFmpeg Documentation.
There is no universal VPS size established for this job. Resource demand depends on whether FFmpeg copies compatible streams or re-encodes them, as well as resolution, bitrate, input type, stream count, and the VPS provider’s network conditions. Size the server from the actual workload rather than an unsupported minimum specification.
Test the stream over SSH first
Check the input and command
Run the intended FFmpeg command interactively in an SSH session before configuring a service. Confirm that FFmpeg can read the input, that the selected codecs and container are suitable, and that YouTube receives the stream. For a file that should be sent in real time, FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows the pattern -re -i myfile with an FLV output to an RTMP URL. Adapt it to YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint and your media; it is an illustration, not a complete universal command. See FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
Use the endpoint and stream key currently shown in YouTube’s live-stream settings. YouTube documents RTMPS ingestion as RTMP over a secure TLS connection; its connection guidance calls for the correct hostname, port 443, and hostname for SNI authentication. A connection example has this general shape, but the endpoint and credentials must come from your own YouTube configuration:

ffmpeg -re -i /srv/stream/video.mp4 [your encoding or stream-copy options] -f flv "[current YouTube RTMPS ingest URL]/[stream key]"
This is a command shape, not a ready-to-run command. Replace the bracketed text with valid options and the current URL. Avoid saving the key in shell history: use a safer secret-handling method for your shell and host. For a real stream, verify the live status in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming that a running FFmpeg process means a healthy broadcast. Choose copy or re-encoding deliberately
Stream copy avoids decoding and encoding the media again, but it is only suitable when the input’s codecs and stream properties work for the intended output. Re-encoding gives you control over output format and encoding settings, but adds CPU demand and can expose resource limits on a small VPS. Test the actual media and settings; no benchmark or universal bitrate or server specification is established here.
Run FFmpeg without a desktop or terminal session
Why a background FFmpeg process can pause
FFmpeg normally checks console input. If launched as a background task, that input check can suspend it. The FFmpeg FAQ says: “To prevent these input checks, allowing ffmpeg to run as a background task, use the -nostdin option in the ffmpeg invocation.” Redirecting standard input from /dev/null is an alternative. For a managed service, use -nostdin explicitly. See the FFmpeg FAQ: background tasks.

A shell background command may keep running after you disconnect, but it does not provide the same service supervision and restart controls as systemd. For a stream expected to run continuously, systemd is the more suitable operating-system supervisor.
Configure a systemd service
Create a service account and protect secrets
Use a dedicated, non-root account such as stream, and make sure it can read the input and required configuration. Put the stream key in a restricted environment or configuration file, or another secret mechanism appropriate to the host; restrict access to it. Do not expose the key in a unit readable by unrelated users. The exact secret method depends on your distribution and security requirements.

ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -nostdin [input and encoding options] -f flv [current YouTube RTMPS ingestion URL]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Use the absolute path to FFmpeg and a command that has already worked interactively. Ensure arguments are escaped correctly for systemd. Restart=on-failure makes systemd restart the service after qualifying failures; the ten-second delay shown is an example policy, not a universally required interval.
Enable, start, and inspect it
- After creating or changing the unit, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable it at boot and start it with
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Inspect process and unit status with
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Read service output with
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service; add-fto follow new log lines while diagnosing. - Separately verify the stream’s ingest and live status in YouTube Live Control Room, and check that the expected media is reaching viewers.
systemd recommends Restart=on-failure for long-running services and applies rate limits to repeated starts. If FFmpeg keeps failing, systemd may stop retrying until the rate-limit conditions allow another start. Consult systemd.service(5) for restart semantics and limits. Automatic restart reacts to process failures; it cannot guarantee that YouTube is receiving valid media or that a stream with a persistent configuration problem will recover.
Loop prerecorded video carefully
If the source is prerecorded material, configure looping deliberately in the FFmpeg input or command design and confirm that the YouTube stream or event is configured for the duration you intend. A loop controls what FFmpeg reads; it does not prevent network disconnects or fix ingest errors. Depending on the command, a service restart may begin the file from the start rather than resume where it left off.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg suspends or stops responding after being backgrounded | It is checking terminal input. | Add -nostdin or redirect standard input from /dev/null. For a persistent stream, run it under systemd. |
| Connection fails immediately | Wrong endpoint, hostname, port, TLS/SNI setup, or stream key; possibly an insecure RTMP URL where RTMPS is intended. | Copy the current RTMPS endpoint from YouTube, verify hostname and port 443, and check the key without exposing it in logs or screenshots. |
| systemd repeatedly restarts FFmpeg | The underlying input, credential, endpoint, network, codec/container, or resource problem remains. | Read journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service and FFmpeg’s error output; check file permissions, key handling, endpoint, media compatibility, network access, and resource pressure. Account for systemd’s restart rate limiting. |
| Service is active but the broadcast is missing or unhealthy | A live process does not establish successful YouTube ingestion or continuous media flow. | Check YouTube Live Control Room and the actual input and encoder output; do not treat active alone as proof of a healthy broadcast. |
| Stream drops when the VPS is busy | The encoding workload or network demand may exceed available resources. | Determine whether the stream is copied or re-encoded, its resolution and bitrate, the number of concurrent streams, and the VPS network capacity before changing the server size. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VPS and systemd service, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it is not a camera-streaming service and streams to YouTube only. The stream runs at the quality you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial.
