To add a video to a running 24/7 YouTube stream, add it to the playlist in the encoder or streaming service that is sending the live feed. Uploading it to your YouTube channel does not add it to that feed. With OBS, use a VLC Video Source playlist; if OBS does not pick up an edit while it is playing, refresh the source or switch to a prepared scene without ending the encoder connection, then verify playback in YouTube’s preview.
Where the video queue lives
YouTube receives the outgoing feed from an encoder or hosted streaming service. That tool controls which prerecorded video is playing. A regular upload to your channel’s video library is separate from the live feed, so it will not appear in the stream automatically.
In OBS, Media Source plays an individual file, while VLC Video can play a playlist and provides loop and shuffle controls. OBS documents playlist playback, but its documentation does not promise that an edit to a playlist will be detected seamlessly during active playback. Treat a live queue edit as something to verify, not as a guaranteed hot update.
Add a video with an OBS VLC playlist
- Identify the active scene and source. In OBS, check which scene is on air and which source supplies its video. If the queue is a playlist, confirm that the source is VLC Video, rather than a single-file Media Source. OBS requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. - Add the file to the playlist. Edit the playlist used by that VLC Video source and add the new video. Check the item order, and set loop or shuffle according to how you want the queue to behave.
- Check whether the active source picked up the change. Watch the OBS preview. A file appearing in the playlist editor is not proof that it has entered the live playback sequence.
- Verify the incoming stream. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview as well. Confirm that the intended video is playing before relying on the change.
- If it has not appeared, refresh playback deliberately. Refresh or restart the source, or switch to a prepared alternate source or scene and then back as appropriate. Keep OBS connected to YouTube if continuity is the priority. A source or scene change can alter what viewers see even while YouTube continues receiving the encoder feed; verify the result in both previews.
Test the edit on a low-risk stream before using it on an important broadcast. The OBS guide explains playlist features, but does not guarantee that every OBS and VLC version will reload a modified playlist at the current playback position without resetting content.

Keep the feed and the live event straight
The playback source and the YouTube broadcast are separate layers. Changing a source or scene changes the content OBS sends; it does not automatically mean the YouTube event must end. Avoid stopping the encoder unless a restart is necessary for your setup.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting with a stream URL and stream key. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder, wait for the preview, and select Go live in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. If your workaround would stop the encoder or end the event, decide first whether you need to preserve one continuous live event or can accept a new event. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Keep your stream key private: YouTube uses it to identify where the encoder sends the feed and to accept that feed. Change or reset the key only when needed, and update the encoder’s saved key if you do. YouTube documents key controls in Manage live stream settings.
YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes a liveStream resource, which carries delivery settings for the feed, from liveBroadcast resources, which represent events. Its recurring-event example binds multiple broadcasts to one stream resource and notes that only one event can be live at a time. This distinction helps explain why changing a YouTube upload does not change the encoder’s current playlist. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

Use a hosted queue instead of editing OBS
A hosted 24/7 service is another way to manage prerecorded videos without maintaining a local OBS playlist. Troubleshoot a video that does not appear
- The video is uploaded to YouTube but not in the live stream: Add it to the playlist or queue in the encoder or hosted service. The channel’s upload library does not control that feed.
- The file is listed in OBS but is not playing: Confirm you edited the playlist used by the active VLC Video source, then inspect the OBS preview. If necessary, refresh the source or transition to a prepared scene.
- VLC Video is unavailable in OBS: Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; OBS requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- The OBS preview changed but YouTube’s did not: Check that OBS remains connected and that the YouTube Live Control Room preview is receiving the intended feed. Do not assume a local preview alone confirms the incoming stream.
- The broadcast ended during a restart: Check the event status in Live Control Room and decide whether to continue with that event or start another. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end.
Check before changing an important stream
- Confirm whether the service supports editing its queue while it is live, rather than assuming it does.
- Test the addition and any source transition on a low-risk stream first.
- Keep a prepared alternate source or scene available if you need to refresh playback without disconnecting the encoder.
- Use videos you have rights to stream and follow YouTube’s copyright rules. A playlist change does not establish that the content is permitted or eligible for monetization.
