FFmpeg saying it has started does not mean YouTube has accepted the feed or published the event. Open the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room: the preview and stream-health messages show whether YouTube is receiving the feed and what needs attention. For a scheduled stream, you may also need to click Go live after the preview appears.
The cause in a particular setup depends on its FFmpeg logs, stream settings and Live Control Room status. Check those in order before changing encoding settings.
1. Check whether YouTube is receiving the feed
Open the stream in Live Control Room and look for a preview and the stream-health indicator. YouTube’s dashboard shows timestamped errors; it describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. Read the message and its timestamp before changing your command, since the reported error can point to the failing stage. YouTube’s live-stream error guide explains these messages.
- No preview: Check the destination URL, stream key, protocol and connection errors.
- Preview appears, but the event is offline: Check whether this is a scheduled stream that still needs the separate Go live action.
- Preview appears with a health warning: Use the timestamped message to investigate format, codec, bitrate or connection issues.
A local FFmpeg process can produce output without proving that YouTube has ingested it. The Live Control Room preview and health status are the more useful evidence of YouTube-side receipt. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide also recommends distinguishing encoder output from outbound connection trouble.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Verify the stream URL and key
In Live Control Room, compare the server URL and stream key for the intended stream with the destination and key supplied to FFmpeg. YouTube describes the URL as the feed’s destination and the key as the credential that allows the service to accept it. A valid key for another stream is still the wrong key for this event.
- Open the intended stream’s settings in Live Control Room.
- Copy its server URL and stream key, then compare them with the values in your FFmpeg command or configuration.
- If a third-party encoder cannot start, YouTube recommends copying a new stream key and updating the encoder. Replace the old key wherever it is stored, and avoid exposing the new one in logs or screenshots.
See YouTube’s live stream settings instructions and troubleshooting guidance. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to that stream.

3. If it is scheduled, publish the event separately
For YouTube’s encoder workflow, starting FFmpeg begins transmission; it does not necessarily publish the scheduled event to viewers. YouTube instructs creators to start the encoder, wait until the preview appears in Live Control Room, and then click Go live. Check the scheduled stream’s state and use that button when the preview is ready. Manage live stream settings describes the workflow.
4. Match the feed to YouTube’s encoder guidance
If YouTube reports a format or codec problem, compare the actual output with the current encoder guidance for the protocol and stream type you selected. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and specifies supported video and audio codecs, bitrate guidance and keyframe frequency. Its cited guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says the interval should not exceed four seconds; these are YouTube recommendations, not universal FFmpeg defaults. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions page for the relevant workflow rather than applying settings blindly.

- Confirm the protocol and ingest endpoint match the stream’s settings.
- Confirm the codecs and output format are among the options YouTube supports for that workflow.
- Check that the output uses constant bitrate where YouTube’s guidance calls for it.
- Check keyframe frequency against YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum in the cited guidance.
Do not infer the cause from a generic “offline” label alone. Use the dashboard’s explicit health message alongside FFmpeg’s output.
5. Check RTMPS endpoint and connection errors
If you chose RTMPS, copy the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room; do not assume an ordinary RTMP address is interchangeable. YouTube says both the protocol and server should be rtmps. For the SSL error described in its help page, YouTube suggests trying port 443; for a timeout, it recommends rechecking the URL and confirming that the encoder supports RTMPS. Read YouTube’s RTMPS guidance for those specific checks.

The total outgoing stream bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom in its streaming tips. A locally healthy FFmpeg output does not rule out a problem between your encoder and YouTube: if the local output looks correct, check connection stability and outbound capacity. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and testing.

Compare the total bitrate of the audio and video feed with the upload capacity available during the stream, not just an advertised maximum. If the network cannot sustain it, reduce the output bitrate within YouTube’s guidance or investigate the connection before retrying.
7. Confirm viewers can access the published stream
A feed visible in Live Control Room and a published event that viewers can open are separate checks. YouTube recommends testing before the event and confirming that the stream is accessible from the channel and watch pages. Check the intended public viewing destination after you have confirmed the preview and event state; this helps identify whether the remaining issue is publication or viewer access. YouTube’s streaming tips include these checks.
Diagnose by failure stage
| Stage | Inspect | What it helps establish |
|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | FFmpeg logs and local audio/video output | Whether FFmpeg is generating the intended feed. |
| Connection or authentication | Server URL, protocol, stream key and connection errors | Whether FFmpeg is reaching the intended ingest endpoint with the intended key. |
| YouTube ingest | Live Control Room preview, health indicator and timestamped errors | Whether YouTube is receiving and accepting the feed, and what error it reports. |
| Event publication | Scheduled stream state and Go live action | Whether a scheduled event with a preview has also been published. |
| Viewer access and network | Upload capacity, connection stability and watch-page accessibility | Whether delivery or viewer access remains impaired beyond local encoding. |
Common symptoms and what to check
- FFmpeg starts, but there is no Live Control Room preview: Compare the stream URL and key, then inspect protocol and connection errors.
- The preview appears, but the scheduled event remains offline: Check the event state and click Go live after the preview appears, if required by that workflow.
- YouTube reports a format or codec error: Match the output to the encoder settings for your selected protocol and stream type.
- RTMPS reports an SSL error or timeout: Verify the copied RTMPS endpoint and encoder support; for the documented SSL-error case, YouTube suggests trying port 443.
- The feed looks healthy locally but is unstable or unavailable in YouTube: Check outbound upload capacity and connection stability, leaving YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom.
- The dashboard shows the stream, but viewers cannot open it: Check the event’s publication state and test the channel and watch-page destinations.
