Get the current key in YouTube Studio, then replace only the old key in FFmpeg’s output destination—or in the separate key field your setup uses. If you reset the key, update the encoder before it can stream with the replacement.
Find or reset the key in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live > Stream.
- Under Stream key, copy the current key. To replace a key that may be compromised or is otherwise no longer suitable, select Reset and copy the newly generated key.
- Update the key wherever your FFmpeg command or wrapper stores it. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; an editor or viewer cannot. YouTube’s stream setup instructions describe the Live Control Room workflow.
A stream key identifies the feed to YouTube and should be treated like a password. Do not expose it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or recording. If you think it has been exposed, reset it and replace the stored value in the encoder.
Replace the key in the FFmpeg destination
In a command where the destination URL includes the key, change the key portion at the end of the URL and leave the rest of the command intact. A typical command shape is:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmps://<YOUTUBE_INGESTION_HOST>/<APP_PATH>/<STREAM_KEY>'Replace <STREAM_KEY> with the key copied from Live Control Room. Use the ingestion host and application path YouTube gives you for that stream; the placeholders above are not literal values, and a sample host or path should not be copied blindly. FFmpeg’s output destination comes last, after the input and output options. The -f flv option specifies the output format; it is not where the stream key is set. If the URL and key are separate
Some encoder configurations accept the ingestion URL and stream key or stream name in separate fields. In that case, update the key field, not the URL. Other configurations join them in a destination shaped like STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the format your existing FFmpeg invocation or wrapper expects; do not append the key a second time if it is already passed separately. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the stream URL and stream-name arrangement.
If you use an environment variable or script
When the command reads the key from an environment variable, configuration file, or wrapper, change that value instead of editing unrelated encoding arguments. Keep the replacement private, and avoid printing it in logs or sharing a command that contains it.

Keep the YouTube endpoint and protocol correct
Changing the key does not usually require changing the ingestion host or application path. Preserve the destination YouTube supplied unless Live Control Room gives you a different one. For an RTMPS destination, YouTube specifies the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube endpoint, the correct application path, and port 443. Check YouTube’s RTMPS requirements if you are configuring the endpoint as well as rotating the key.
Verify the replacement and troubleshoot
- Save the updated command or configuration, keeping the new key private.
- Start FFmpeg and check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming stream and stream-health messages.
- If the stream does not appear or has a health warning, use the checks below before changing unrelated options.
- The old command stopped working after a reset: Resetting invalidates the old key for this setup. Copy the replacement from Live Control Room and update the key value FFmpeg actually uses.
- FFmpeg connects but YouTube reports a health issue: Read the specific stream-health message. YouTube documents problems including unsupported codecs, missing audio or video, mismatched secondary streams, and keyframe intervals that are too long. Check the relevant encoding settings rather than changing the key again without evidence of a key problem. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- The destination is rejected: Confirm the host and application path match the current YouTube destination, and that the command uses the expected RTMP or RTMPS protocol. For RTMPS, verify the endpoint configuration and port 443.
- You are unsure whether FFmpeg is receiving the key: Identify whether the existing invocation uses a combined destination URL, a separate key field, or a variable supplied by a wrapper. Update that credential component only.
