Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To reduce OBS CPU usage during a 24/7 YouTube stream, first find out whether OBS is overloaded while encoding, rendering, or processing a complex scene. If software encoding is the bottleneck, try a compatible hardware encoder; otherwise, simplify the scene or lower output resolution or frame rate in measured steps. Then test the same motion, audio, and scenes you expect to stream, and check YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup.
Find out what is using the CPU
Do not change several settings at once. Reproduce the problem using the scenes and content planned for the long stream, then open OBS’s Stats window and review the OBS log. Look for encoding overload and rendering lag, and compare OBS’s CPU use with overall system use. These indicators point to different kinds of pressure; there is no universal CPU-percentage threshold that identifies a problem on every computer.
A quiet scene may be less demanding than one with animated overlays, video playback, browser sources, capture devices, or transitions. Test representative scenes rather than judging system capacity from a static preview. If the log is unclear, the encoder, rendering, and dropped-frame indicators need to be interpreted alongside your hardware, operating system, and OBS version.
Choose the fix that matches the bottleneck
If software encoding is the problem, test a hardware encoder
OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide explains that hardware encoders can move video-encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU hardware. OBS lists QuickSync, NVENC, and AMD VCE among the options when available. Which one appears and works depends on the hardware generation, driver, operating system, and OBS build.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In OBS, open Settings > Output and check the encoder for the streaming output. If a compatible hardware encoder is available, select it and run a representative test. Compare encoding overload, stream stability, and image quality at the chosen bitrate; a hardware encoder does not necessarily reduce overall system load or fix rendering pressure. Older encoder generations can also produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264 at its default veryfast preset, so do not assume that offloading work is a quality-neutral change.
The OBS guide, dated January 11, 2022, describes NVIDIA support on Windows and Linux for GeForce 750 Ti / Maxwell-era GPUs or newer and identifies Turing as a sixth-generation NVENC generation. Treat that as dated compatibility guidance, not a complete current hardware list. Check the current OBS documentation and your device’s support before buying or changing hardware.
If rendering or scene processing is the problem, simplify what OBS draws
Use a controlled test: hide or remove one source, filter, or animation at a time, then check whether OBS’s relevant Stats indicators improve. Keep the changes that help without removing something the program needs. No source type has one fixed CPU cost across all scenes and systems.

If the stream can be lighter, reduce output resolution or frame rate
In Settings > Video, consider lowering Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you actually intend to deliver. If 60 fps is not working, OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide specifically recommends trying 30 fps. Test the resulting picture and motion; lowering resolution or frame rate reduces the work OBS must do, but changes the delivered stream.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution separate from output resolution. OBS generally advises against reducing the canvas because it can complicate capture and asset management, and recommends doing so only when resources are severely constrained. If you must change it, make a new scene collection and reposition or resize sources there rather than disrupting the existing layout.
Do not buy a GPU before confirming the need
A GPU upgrade is a conditional option if your current hardware lacks a suitable encoder and testing confirms software encoding is the bottleneck. It may not help when the limiting work is rendering, filters, or scene complexity. Check compatibility with your computer and OBS before purchasing; there is no single card recommendation that fits every configuration.

Keep YouTube Live settings within ingest recommendations
Use YouTube’s live-stream encoder guidance—not its upload-video encoding table—to choose settings. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations specify RTMP/RTMPS codecs including H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
For H.264, the following are YouTube live-ingest recommendations. Pick the row matching your output; these are not CPU-use targets, and lowering bitrate alone is not a dependable fix for CPU encoding overload.

In OBS, set the streaming output to CBR and use the matching YouTube bitrate and keyframe guidance. YouTube’s Live Control Room can automatically detect resolution and frame rate by default. Confirm the received stream’s settings and health there rather than assuming that OBS’s output alone establishes what YouTube is receiving.

Leave upload capacity for headroom
YouTube’s Streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate. Check actual available upload capacity and account for other people or devices sharing the connection; a shared network can reduce what is available to OBS. This margin is a network reliability recommendation, not a CPU setting.
Test the program you will actually run
YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with similar motion and audio to the real program, then monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room. For a 24/7 run, include a representative long-duration test and decide how you will notice and respond to a dropped or unhealthy stream. Stream-key and auto-start/auto-stop settings in Live Control Room can affect operation, but automation is not a substitute for testing or monitoring.

Common problems and what to try
- OBS reports encoding overload: test a hardware encoder if available, or lower output resolution or frame rate. Change one variable at a time and verify the picture and stream health.
- Rendering lag persists after changing encoders: the encoder change may not address the bottleneck. Simplify scenes and test sources, filters, and animations individually.
- CPU load looks low, but viewers see interruptions: inspect YouTube stream health and check upload capacity and network sharing. CPU tuning and network reliability are separate issues.
- The scene layout breaks after changing resolution: restore the previous canvas if possible. If a canvas change is essential, use a new scene collection and reposition or resize its sources.
- The stream looks worse after switching encoders: compare image quality at the same suitable YouTube bitrate during a realistic test. Encoder quality varies by hardware generation and settings.
- YouTube reports an ingest problem: verify codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against the current YouTube live-encoder table, then check the received stream in Live Control Room.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded videos live on YouTube, a cloud service can remove the local OBS computer from that playback job. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud loops the uploaded video, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). A slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. The same features apply on every plan; only the term changes. Monthly: $9.99 per month. For a camera-based or locally composed interactive OBS stream, this is not a replacement for that workflow.
