If you already own a suitable spare computer, try it first for a simple pre-encoded video loop—provided your home upload connection is stable and its electricity cost is acceptable. A VPS is a better fit when remote control is worth the monthly rent and its transfer allowance covers your stream. A managed cloud service suits creators who would rather avoid server administration. There is no universally cheapest option: the answer depends on your bitrate, power tariff, machine, VPS quota, and taxes.
What you are choosing between
A loop stream sends a pre-recorded video or playlist to YouTube continuously. The stream still needs an encoder or service to send the video, a working network path, and a valid YouTube stream setup.

Start with bitrate: it determines network and transfer needs
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 4 Mbps for 720p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommended encoder ingestion settings; YouTube transcodes a stream to create formats for viewers, so the final viewer bitrate can differ. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

For a continuously running stream, bitrate also determines how much data a VPS must send each month. At 30 days, the approximate transfer is bitrate × time:
- 6 Mbps: about 1.94 decimal TB for 30 days, before overhead.
- 10 Mbps: about 3.24 decimal TB for 30 days, before overhead.
These are planning calculations, not provider-measured usage. Allow headroom for protocol overhead and confirm how a host counts transfer. Do not choose a VPS based on CPU and RAM alone: a low-cost plan can have too little monthly outbound data for a 24/7 stream.

When a spare computer is the sensible first step
Advantages
- If the computer is already yours and suitable, you may avoid buying hardware or paying VPS rent.
- You can use familiar desktop streaming tools and inspect the workflow directly.
- For a compatible pre-encoded source, copying the stream rather than re-encoding it is lighter on compute, as described in the comparison guidance. Re-encoding can increase CPU or GPU demands.
Costs and responsibilities
The stream travels from your computer through your home connection to YouTube. The machine must remain available, and home power, router, ISP interruptions, updates, and manual restarts become your responsibility. OBS says it sends directly from the user’s computer to the streaming destination, and unstable or insufficient connectivity can cause dropped frames. OBS is free and open source; its troubleshooting guidance explains that dropped frames increasing alongside a yellow or red connection indicator point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Test at the intended bitrate rather than assuming an ordinary speed-test result guarantees a stable stream. YouTube recommends checking upload capacity, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health during the stream (YouTube Help).

Work out your electricity cost
Measure or estimate the computer’s power draw while streaming, then multiply by the hours it will run and your applicable electricity tariff. Your actual marginal cost depends on that machine and your local tariff; there is no reliable nationwide figure for this comparison. If you would need to buy a computer, include its purchase cost rather than treating it as a free spare.
When a VPS is worth paying for
A VPS moves the streaming workload to a data centre, so your home computer does not need to stay on. In exchange, you rent the server and take responsibility for configuring and supervising it. Size it for the actual workflow: a small instance should not be assumed capable of re-encoding a high-resolution source simply because it can run a basic stream process.

Compare transfer quota with the stream you plan to send
VPSWala’s catalogue, whose pricing was reviewed on 21 August 2026, lists monthly examples at ₹596 for 200 GB transfer (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM) and ₹4,799 for 1,600 GB (12 vCPU, 32 GB RAM); listed prices exclude GST. Even the 1,600 GB allowance is below the approximate 1.94 decimal TB required for a continuous 6 Mbps stream over 30 days, before overhead. Confirm current checkout pricing, quota measurement, and overage or suspension rules with VPSWala.
Inservers advertises a streaming VPS starting at ₹880 per month with 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe storage, and a 1 Gbps unmetered uplink. These are provider claims, not independently verified performance. Before purchase, check the meaning of “unmetered,” sustained outbound-stream policies, data-centre location, applicable taxes, and acceptable-use terms on its streaming VPS page.

Operational work to budget for
- Configure the server and streaming workflow, and keep credentials secure.
- Confirm the server can reach YouTube reliably at the chosen bitrate.
- Monitor the process and arrange a way to restart it if it stops; a VPS does not remove the need for supervision.
- Check transfer use over time against the plan’s allowance and terms.
Set the YouTube stream up securely and test it
- Choose your output settings. Use a YouTube-recommended bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Consult the current encoder settings guidance for the complete settings and compatibility details.
- Use RTMPS where supported. Google’s documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; a connection must use a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and port 443. See YouTube RTMPS ingestion (last updated 14 September 2026 UTC).
- Enter the stream destination and key in your encoder. Use the endpoint and stream key provided in YouTube’s live setup. Treat the key as a password; do not publish it or include it in screenshots or public logs.
- Test before the continuous run. YouTube recommends a speed test for upload bitrate, a test stream before starting, and monitoring stream health. Check that your actual connection and encoder stay stable at the intended settings.
- Check rights and YouTube policies. A loop being technically live does not establish that you have permission to broadcast its music, footage, or other material. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules, including policies relevant to reused content. - Try the spare computer if you already have a suitable machine, can leave it available, and have stable upload capacity at an electricity cost you accept.
- Choose a VPS if remote control and moving the workload off your home setup matter, you are comfortable managing a server, and the plan’s transfer allowance genuinely covers your bitrate with headroom.
- Choose managed cloud looping if you value a simpler workflow and recovery handling more than server-level control, and the service’s price, storage, and limits fit your use.
