One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a pre-recorded video sent to YouTube Live, set the encoder’s outgoing stream to YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations for its codec, resolution and frame rate. For 1080p at 30 fps, that is 10 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 14 Mbps with H.264; at 60 fps, use 12 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 17 Mbps with H.264. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, RTMPS where available, and enough upload capacity to leave about 20% headroom.
These are settings for the encoded live feed—not a required bitrate for the prerecorded file stored on disk. The encoder’s output is what matters. YouTube Help’s current guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, is the basis for the recommendations below; its pages do not display publication dates.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrate by resolution and codec
Choose the row that matches the resolution and frame rate your encoder actually sends, then use the column for the outgoing codec. YouTube lists minimum and recommended live-ingestion bitrates; the recommended values are the practical targets when your connection can sustain them.
| Outgoing resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 minimum | AV1 / H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help’s current live encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026, not its separate video-upload encoding recommendations. YouTube automatically detects the encoder settings and transcodes the incoming live feed into formats for different devices and network conditions, so you generally do not need to send a separate bitrate for each viewer.

How to choose the right output settings
Match the outgoing frame rate and resolution
Use the settings for the feed sent by your encoder, not merely the properties of the original file. If your file is 4K but the encoder outputs 1080p30, use the 1080p30 row. Higher resolutions and 60 fps require more bitrate than 720p30 or 1080p30.
Match the codec the encoder actually uses
H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 are listed as supported live video codecs, but their recommended rates differ. Check the encoder’s selected codec and use its corresponding table column; do not choose the lower AV1/H.265 rate if the outgoing feed is H.264.

Prefer a stable connection over a higher target
YouTube recommends keeping about 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total streaming bitrate. Include audio in the total, and assess upload speed under realistic network conditions—download speed does not establish upload capacity. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the target plus headroom, lower the outgoing resolution or frame rate and test again. A stable lower-resolution feed is preferable to a stream that repeatedly loses connection.
Consider latency only if the broadcast needs interaction
Lower latency can increase playback buffering. For a prerecorded broadcast with little or no audience interaction, low latency may matter less than reliable playback. YouTube says its 2160p/4K low-latency option is unavailable: 4K streams are optimized for quality and use normal latency.

Account for HDR and color
YouTube identifies H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. Use the matching color workflow for the source and encoder rather than assuming an SDR setting will preserve HDR.
Set up and test a prerecorded YouTube Live stream
- Prepare the source. Confirm the file plays from beginning to end, with the intended picture and audio, and note its resolution and frame rate. If the encoder changes those properties, use the output values when choosing the bitrate.
- Create the live event in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and configure the stream. YouTube’s default is to automatically detect resolution and frame rate. If you need manual control, create a custom stream key and enable manual stream-resolution settings.
- Configure the encoder. Select the outgoing codec, resolution and frame rate; set bitrate using the table above; choose CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends RTMPS and says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval. Its supported ingestion protocols include RTMP and RTMPS.
- Connect with the stream URL and key. Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio into the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Check upload capacity. Test the actual upload connection at a time and on a network representative of the broadcast. Leave approximately 20% headroom beyond the total video and audio bitrate; reduce the output target if the available upload capacity is inconsistent.
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder feed and inspect the preview in the Live Control Room. Check image, audio levels, synchronization and playback continuity using the actual prerecorded file.
- Monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast. If health degrades, reduce resolution or frame rate, or lower bitrate to a value the connection can sustain; then verify the feed stabilizes.
Troubleshooting common bitrate and playback problems
- Stream health reports connection or bandwidth trouble: the outgoing bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, especially with audio and network variation. Lower the bitrate, resolution or frame rate, and retest with headroom.
- Video buffers or drops frames despite an adequate target: check for fluctuations in upload performance and confirm that the selected table row matches the encoder’s actual resolution, frame rate and codec. A bitrate number alone cannot compensate for an unstable connection.
- Picture quality looks softer than expected: verify that the encoder is sending the intended resolution and codec and that its bitrate matches that output. YouTube transcodes live streams, so the source file’s resolution does not guarantee identical viewer playback.
- The stream does not appear in the preview: confirm the event is configured in the Live Control Room, the encoder has the correct stream URL and key, and the encoder is sending through a supported protocol. Preview the incoming feed before starting the event.
- Audio is missing, clipped or out of sync: test the actual file and encoder path before the event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream; for prerecorded content, check the source’s audio and continuity specifically.
- 4K low latency cannot be selected: this is a YouTube limitation in the current guidance; 2160p streams use normal latency.
Can you stream a prerecorded video as YouTube Live?
Yes. An encoder can send prerecorded playback to YouTube as a live feed. The bitrate recommendations apply to that outgoing encoded feed, just as they do to other live video. You still need to prepare the event in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder, preview the stream and monitor stream health.

If the goal is continuous prerecorded playback rather than controlling an encoder on your own computer, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud continues playback without a computer, OBS or home internet connection staying on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
