Which free software fits a 24/7 YouTube radio stream?
These tools solve different parts of the job, so they are not interchangeable. OBS sends a composed video stream to YouTube. LibreTime schedules station output and supports live input. Mixxx is for live DJ mixing and broadcasting to radio servers. BUTT sends live audio to internet radio servers.

For most creators whose destination is YouTube, start with OBS for the visual encoder. If you need a clock-based music schedule or unattended radio playout, evaluate LibreTime as a separate automation layer. Use Mixxx for live DJ sets and BUTT for a simpler live-audio-to-radio-server path. The documentation for these free tools does not establish that any single desktop application guarantees continuous 24/7 operation.
What YouTube requires before you go live
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Create or select a stream in Live Control Room. Get the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS, select YouTube if a suitable destination preset is available, or enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or show it in the stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live settings before broadcasting again.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream and that audio and visuals are correct before relying on the broadcast.
OBS connects directly to the streaming destination, so a local computer, its media source, and its internet connection remain part of the live path. OBS notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. See the OBS Help Portal.

How to choose an automation workflow
Visual radio stream with OBS
Use OBS when you need an image, logo, waveform, camera-free visual, or other scene alongside the audio. Add the audio source and visual elements in OBS, configure the YouTube destination with the URL and key, then monitor the outgoing connection. OBS is free for any use, according to its Help Portal, and has no watermark or usage limitation.
Scheduled station output with LibreTime
LibreTime is the option to investigate when the station needs scheduled output plus the ability to hand a show over to a live source. Its documentation describes radio-stream workflows and live broadcasting, including a guide that pairs live input with Mixxx. It does not establish a universal, plug-and-play route from LibreTime directly into YouTube as a complete video stream.

Live DJ or radio-server broadcast
Mixxx can broadcast live DJ output to Icecast or SHOUTcast. AzuraCast’s streaming software guide covers Mixxx and BUTT connection options and recommends Icecast mode. It notes that Mixxx can send Ogg Vorbis to AzuraCast for Liquidsoap transcoding. This is a radio-server route, not proof that either app itself creates the YouTube video output.
LibreTime’s live broadcasting guide and stream configuration documentation describe compatible radio-server workflows and formats. Choose this path if you specifically need those station capabilities; plan separately for how the audio will reach a YouTube encoder and what will provide the visuals.

Plan for the limits of a 24/7 broadcast
- Archive duration: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a 24-hour broadcast will be preserved as one complete archived video; the cited YouTube guidance does not promise automatic archiving for longer streams.
- Connection and host failures: A desktop encoder depends on the host machine, network, media source, and configuration. Software choice alone does not guarantee uptime. Monitor YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder, and decide who will respond if the stream stops.
- Music and visual rights: Confirm that you have the rights needed for the music and visuals you broadcast, including for the territories where your stream is available. The software documentation does not determine what rights apply to your specific material.
- Monetization: YouTube’s encoder guide discusses monetization eligibility separately from simply sending a stream. Do not assume that a 24/7 format or a particular application guarantees monetization.
Troubleshooting common problems
YouTube does not show an incoming stream
Check that live streaming has been enabled, the correct stream is selected in Live Control Room, and the encoder has the matching server URL and stream key. If this is the first time the channel is going live, enablement can take up to 24 hours.
The stream drops frames or disconnects
OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as common reasons for dropped frames. Check connection stability and reduce the configured bitrate if necessary; then watch the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s incoming preview.

The radio schedule plays, but YouTube has no usable picture
Scheduled audio playout and YouTube video encoding are separate functions in the documented workflows. Make sure a visual encoder such as OBS is receiving the audio and producing a scene, and confirm that the encoder—not only the radio automation system—is connected to YouTube.
The broadcast ends and the archive is incomplete or absent
Check the stream’s total duration. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited guidance does not establish automatic archiving for a longer continuous stream. Plan recordings or shorter broadcast segments if you need a dependable archive.
