A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11First identify which kind of stutter you have: OBS dropping frames points to an unstable or insufficient network connection; rendering or encoding overload points to limited computer resources; and viewer buffering can happen even when OBS reports no dropped frames. Check OBS’s counters and status before changing settings, then fix the matching cause.
1. Check whether the stream or the viewer is having the problem
“Lag” can mean different things. Ask whether the video looks choppy in OBS or to you as the broadcaster, whether OBS’s dropped-frame count is increasing, or whether only viewers report buffering. Those symptoms do not all point to the same cause.
- Dropped frames are increasing: investigate the network connection and configured bitrate first.
- OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload: reduce the work OBS and the computer have to do.
- OBS shows no dropped frames, but viewers buffer: consider the viewers’ connection and device, as well as whether your bitrate is too demanding for some of them.
2. Fix dropped frames and connection instability
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming, and suggests trying another server, lowering bitrate, reviewing network software and hardware, and contacting your internet service provider if the problem persists. See the OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
Test the connection before changing several settings
- Use Ethernet if possible. Connect the streaming computer to the router by cable and see whether dropped frames stop increasing. A wired test can help distinguish Wi-Fi instability from other causes; an Ethernet cable will not fix rendering or encoding overload.
- Review bitrate against upload capacity. OBS’s connection guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. Treat that as a starting point in OBS troubleshooting, not a guarantee or a universal YouTube setting. Available upload capacity can vary, especially if other devices or applications are using the connection.
- Try a different server. A different route to the remote server may behave better if the current connection path is unstable.
- Review network software and hardware. Look for software or equipment that may be affecting the connection; avoid assuming the OBS encoder is the cause when its dropped-frame counter identifies a connection problem.
- Contact your ISP if trouble continues. The route includes equipment and network routing outside OBS’s control.
3. Reduce rendering or encoding load
OBS has to composite and render scenes as well as encode the output, so a machine under heavy graphics or processing load can struggle even when the network is stable. If OBS reports rendering or encoding problems rather than increasing network-dropped frames, test a lighter workload. The OBS Project’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains the resource issue and remedies.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make one controlled change at a time
- Try a simpler scene. Temporarily remove or disable nonessential sources and filters. If the stutter improves, restore items one by one to find which adds too much load.
- Close known GPU-heavy applications. Free resources from other demanding programs, then check whether OBS performance improves.
- Limit costly sources and filters. Reduce or remove effects and sources that are not necessary for the stream.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate if needed. These changes can reduce the work required to render and encode. Make a modest change, then check the result before adjusting further.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS says this can resolve GPU overload in many cases.
4. If viewers buffer but OBS reports no dropped frames
A clean dropped-frame counter does not guarantee smooth playback for every viewer. Viewer location, device capability, and internet quality vary, so a bitrate and stream quality that work for one person may not work for another. If only some viewers report buffering, ask them to check another device or connection; if reports persist across viewers, consider lowering bitrate to make playback more accessible. OBS discusses this distinction in its stream buffering troubleshooting guide.
