What Bitrate Should You Use for a 24/7 YouTube Loop Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a typical H.264 loop, use YouTube’s live-stream recommendation for the resolution and frame rate you’re sending: 14 Mbps at 1080p30, 17 Mbps at 1080p60, or 8 Mbps at 720p30 or 720p60. YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate rule for 24/7 loops. It recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, so a 14 Mbps video stream with audio needs more than 14 Mbps of stable available upload capacity.

Choose a bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec

YouTube’s live-encoder guidance lists recommended ingestion bitrates—the rate your encoder sends to YouTube. The table below reproduces the recommendations in YouTube Help; the page displays no publication year. Select the column for the codec actually used by your encoder.

Live input format AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming or a requirement that every static-looking loop use the same amount of bandwidth. YouTube also lists lower minimums: at 1080p30, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p60, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264. A minimum is not the recommended target.

YouTube transcodes a live feed into playback formats for viewers on different devices and networks. The incoming bitrate in this table is not the viewer’s playback bitrate, and it is not the bitrate guidance for uploading a finished video. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pick a practical format for your loop

Start with the source

Match the outgoing resolution and frame rate to the source and the viewing quality you want. A 30 fps source with limited motion does not automatically benefit from being sent at 60 fps. For a mostly static loop, 1080p30 or 720p30 may be sensible formats to evaluate; that is an application of YouTube’s general table, not a special rule for loops.

Use one codec’s row consistently

For example, if you send 1080p30 using H.264, set 14 Mbps; if you send the same format using AV1 or H.265, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps. Do not pair the bitrate from one codec column with different codec settings. If you need a straightforward H.264 starting point and your encoder and connection can sustain it, 1080p30 at 14 Mbps is a reasonable choice. A constrained setup can evaluate 720p30 at 8 Mbps H.264.

Set the encoder and audio correctly

  • Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
  • Video rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube specifies a maximum interval of four seconds.
  • Supported video codecs and frame rates: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
  • Stereo audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
  • 5.1 audio: The listed setting is AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
  • SDR color: YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.

Audio contributes to the total outgoing bitrate. Include it when checking whether your connection has enough capacity.

Calculate upload headroom for continuous streaming

YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Its guidance explicitly describes primary plus backup plus 20% when sending both feeds. For a single loop, use the planned total bitrate—including audio—as the basis for your headroom check, and test sustained upload capacity rather than relying only on a peak speed-test result. Other people or devices sharing the connection reduce what is available to the encoder. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

A bitrate setting cannot compensate for a connection that drops or fluctuates. YouTube recommends a reliable network; Ethernet is a practical option for a fixed encoder, but the cited YouTube guidance does not require it or specify a cable category.

Test the actual loop before leaving it running

  1. Prepare the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Reuse stream settings or create a custom stream key if that suits your workflow. A stream key contains the destination and credential information used by the encoder, so keep it private.
  2. Configure the encoder. Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, two-second keyframe interval, protocol, and audio format.
  3. Test representative material. Preview the actual loop, including comparable audio and movement. YouTube’s encoder guidance says tests should include audio and movement similar to what will be in the stream.
  4. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Watch for warnings and inspect audio and video quality before relying on the setup.
  5. Monitor operation and backup behavior. YouTube advises continuous monitoring of audio and video and testing encoder failover if a backup encoder is configured. A successful short preview does not establish 24/7 reliability; YouTube does not prescribe a test duration for loop streams.

YouTube also offers latency, DVR, and auto-start/auto-stop controls. These are operational choices rather than bitrate settings. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, and YouTube notes latency matters less when the streamer is not interacting with viewers. Review the relevant controls in YouTube’s live stream settings.

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream problems

  • Stream health warns about insufficient bandwidth: Compare the encoder’s total bitrate, including audio, with stable available upload capacity. Lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a supported row if necessary, and reduce competing network use.
  • Video looks poor despite meeting the recommendation: Confirm that the encoder is sending the resolution and codec you intended and that the bitrate is set in the correct codec column. The recommendation is not a promise of a particular viewer experience.
  • Playback buffers or the feed disconnects: Check for upload fluctuations or interruptions and test under the same network conditions as normal operation. A nominal speed-test peak does not show that capacity will remain available continuously.
  • Keyframe or encoder warnings appear: Verify CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval at or below four seconds.
  • Audio is missing or unsuitable: Check the audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and bitrate against the applicable YouTube guidance; confirm the source loop actually contains the expected audio.
  • The wrong stream receives the feed: Check the selected stream key and destination in the encoder. Treat the key as a credential and replace or reset it if it has been exposed.

Or let it run in the cloud
