How to Stream a Pre-Recorded Video as a YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube Studio can schedule the live event, but it will not play a finished video file by itself. To broadcast a recording as a YouTube Live stream, create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then send the video to that event using OBS on a computer, a cloud playout service, or compatible dedicated hardware.

How a scheduled YouTube Live recording works

There are two separate pieces: the YouTube live event, which holds the title, schedule, visibility, and other settings; and a video source, which sends the recording to YouTube at broadcast time. YouTube describes the distinction between a broadcast and a stream in its Live Streaming API documentation. Scheduling the event alone does not start video playback.

For most first-time creators, the practical choices are OBS on a local computer or cloud playout. OBS gives you direct control, but the computer, OBS, and internet connection must remain available throughout the broadcast. Cloud playout shifts playback to a service’s infrastructure. YouTube also lists an optional hardware route for scheduled prerecorded media.

Check channel eligibility before scheduling

  • Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
  • YouTube’s current guidance says creators must be at least 16 to live stream.
  • First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast.

Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and getting-started instructions.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Option 1: Schedule and broadcast with OBS

  1. Prepare the recording. Check that the video and audio play correctly from beginning to end. Keep the file accessible on the computer that will run OBS for the full broadcast.
  2. Create the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and use the Manage tab to schedule a stream. Enter the title, date and time, visibility, and other event details. Verify that you are working with the intended scheduled event.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, add the recording as a Media Source. Configure the YouTube service integration if available, or copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s settings into OBS. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to use the URL and key when the encoder does not connect through a direct YouTube integration: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  4. Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not show it on screen or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS before streaming.
  5. Test before the scheduled time. Start playback in OBS and check both video and audio. Confirm that OBS is sending to the correct event and review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. In OBS’s scheduled-stream workflow, those controls affect whether sending data alone takes the event live; see the OBS community guide.
  6. Start and monitor the broadcast. At the scheduled time, confirm the correct file is playing and the encoder is sending to the intended event. Monitor the stream during playback, then stop the broadcast when the recording is finished.

This method offers hands-on control, but a sleeping computer, closed OBS session, unavailable file, or interrupted upload connection can stop the feed. Plan for the whole broadcast duration, not just the initial setup.

Option 2: Use cloud playout

A cloud service can play an uploaded recording or playlist at the scheduled time without relying on your home computer to run the video. The setup varies by provider, but the broad sequence is to select YouTube as the destination, upload or choose the recording, set the start time and playback behavior, connect it to the intended YouTube event, and review the configuration before it is scheduled.

  • OneStream Live: Its help material documents selecting or uploading video, choosing YouTube, setting stream details, and scheduling. It also describes playlists, looping, and sending content to an existing YouTube event. See OneStream Live’s scheduling instructions.

These are providers’ descriptions of their own workflows, not independent performance tests. Before relying on any paid service, check its current price, schedule limits, account permissions, archive behavior, and how it connects to an already scheduled YouTube event.

Option 3: Use dedicated hardware

YouTube’s verified-encoder list identifies the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone encoder and notes optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media without a computer. This is a specialist alternative, not a requirement for OBS or cloud playout. Verify the exact configuration needed for scheduled prerecorded playback and current availability before buying. YouTube’s list is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Copyright and YouTube content rules

A recording does not get an exemption from YouTube’s rules just because it is presented as a live broadcast. YouTube says: “All content in live streams must adhere to our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.” Use video and audio you have the rights to broadcast, and do not assume that a scheduled stream or prerecorded format prevents copyright enforcement. The platform’s general guidance cannot determine whether a particular license covers your specific use.

Troubleshooting common problems

The event is scheduled, but no video appears

A scheduled event is not a player. Confirm that an encoder or cloud source is sending video, that it is connected to the correct event, and that playback has started.

OBS is sending data, but the event does not go live

Check the event’s auto-start behavior and the scheduled-stream controls in OBS. Also verify that the event is scheduled for the expected time and that OBS is using its stream settings.

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed

Check that the stream URL and key belong to the intended event and are entered correctly in OBS. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. Confirm the computer still has an internet connection.

Video or audio is missing during the test

Check that the Media Source points to the correct file and that the file remains available to OBS. Play the recording before going live and confirm that both its picture and sound are present.

Live streaming is not available on the channel yet

Review channel verification and eligibility, including any live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.

What happens to the replay?

YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If preserving a replay matters, check the event and channel’s archive settings and confirm the recording appears after the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
