You can use a spare PC as a nonstop YouTube encoder by running OBS Studio, connecting it to a YouTube stream with the stream URL and key, and keeping the computer, video source and internet connection running. First enable live streaming on the channel, then choose settings the PC and upload connection can sustain, test the full setup, and monitor stream health. A spare PC does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime: power, software or network failures can still stop a broadcast.
Before you set up: check channel readiness
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If this is the channel’s first time enabling live streaming, activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Connect the spare PC to YouTube
- Install and open OBS Studio. Create a scene and add the video and audio sources you intend to broadcast. For a prerecorded video or loop, make sure the source is configured to continue playing as intended; test the behavior rather than assuming the source will restart automatically.
- Create or manage a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service, and enter the stream key. If configuring a custom server, use the stream URL YouTube provides. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel.
- Configure the output. In OBS, open Settings > Output and set the encoder and bitrate, then set resolution and frame rate under Settings > Video. Use YouTube’s recommendations below as a starting reference, not a performance guarantee.
- Start a test and check YouTube’s preview. Use the intended video, audio and motion. Confirm the picture and sound are right in the Live Control Room before relying on the setup.
- Go live and monitor. Start streaming from OBS, confirm the stream appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room, and watch stream health and quality during the broadcast.
Choose settings the PC and connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, with RTMPS recommended for encrypted transport. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Available options may depend on the encoder and configuration. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
For H.264, YouTube publishes these ingest bitrate reference values. They describe YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular spare PC or internet connection can sustain them:

Choose a setting based on stable upload capacity, not just a speed-test peak. If the connection cannot reliably maintain the chosen bitrate, lower the bitrate, resolution or frame rate and test again. The encoder must also be able to process the scene continuously; no universal minimum CPU, GPU or memory specification is established for every spare-PC setup.
Set stream behavior and latency for the broadcast
In the Live Control Room’s stream settings, review auto-start and auto-stop. Choose behavior that matches how you plan to start and end the broadcast from OBS; do not assume those options mean YouTube will keep a stream alive if the computer or connection fails.

For an ambient, prerecorded or otherwise non-interactive stream, normal latency is a sensible default. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; it is more useful when you need to interact with viewers. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Test the full setup before leaving it unattended
- Run a representative test with the actual source, audio and motion; inspect YouTube’s preview for picture, sound and synchronization.
- Check stream health and quality in the Live Control Room after going live and during operation.
- Confirm the spare PC is not going to sleep or restart unexpectedly, and that the source continues playing as intended.
- Consider what happens if the power, encoder, video source or internet connection stops. A test can reveal problems, but does not prove the setup will run indefinitely.
YouTube explicitly advises testing before starting a live stream. OBS likewise recommends testing before relying on a broadcast. The official setup guidance does not promise uninterrupted operation or specify a minimum PC configuration for every scene.

Troubleshoot dropped frames, disconnects and a missing preview
